Basilisk lizard-inspired robot

April 9th, 2006

Carnegie Mellon University mechanical engineers have constructed a tiny robot based on the basilisk lizards movements. This robot can sprint across land and water with ease. Powered by a lightweight, high-power motor, this robot is made from 4 plastic legs and a foot-long carbon fiber body.

The research team there is building a zoo of fully autonomous, biologically-inspired robots after studying the intricate mechanics of living creatures. The aim of these robots is to acquire the necessary knowledge needed to form a robot that comprises of all these forms of dynamic locomotion.
