Science Experiment: Microwave Ivory Soap

Microwave Ivory Soap

Steve Spangler Science discovers that the microwave oven is not just to reheat the leftovers.

“Grab a bar of fresh Ivory soap and gather your friends around the microwave oven. Sure, you could do it at your home, but save this great trick for the break room or the staff cafeteria. In under two minutes, you’ll have the best soap soufflé you’ve ever seen.”

Video after the break.

My kids love everything Sandler says or does. The soap in the microwave experimdent is second only to his mentos geyser trick. The kids get his experiment of the week in their email every week, then we have to do it! We like to find Spangler on the internet.

Thanks for the post! We truly appreciate it. This is one of my favorite experiments. It is so much fun that it’s almost addictive. So save yourself some frustration and buy the convenient economy-sized pack of Ivory soap and have a blast! For those who are interested, here are the written instructions, as well as, the science behind the experiment: http://www.stevespanglerscience.com/experiment/00000053 we also have over 200 more videos like this on our website.

This is an incredibly dangerous idea. In order for it to expand, steam must form (212 F). Third degree burns occur at 140 F in as little as one second for a child, 5 seconds for an adult. The surface may feel cool to the touch (the air in the oven is cold) but the interior can be near 200 F. I’m a microwave scientist with early 59 years of experience and own about 50 microwave ovens. Only food should be heated in a microwave oven. To put something like this on television is incredibly irresponsible.
