The origin of Android’s mascot

Google’s Android logo, or mascot to be precise, is a cute little green robot-like thing. Now how does this come by? Why not draw Android’s mascot like Bender? He’s a robot too! Albeit a rather rude one at that. Well obviously the designer of Android’s mascot was playing this game, many years ago I think.

The game is called Gauntlet: The Third Encounter, an arcade-style action game by Atari that was released on the short-lived Atari Lynx handheld in the 90s. There’s a character in the game that’s called Android (yeah, right?). What’s more, it looked ‘early’ the same as the current Android mascot. However, it has been known that there are a few great artists that have gain inspiration and creative ideas for old and classic arcade games, like Gauntlet. Check out the Gauntlet’s gameplay below.
