Google ordered to pay libel damages to perturbed gentleman, plans to appeal

Funny things these days that you can sue nearly anyone for nearly any crack reasons. Surely you’ve use Google’s search before. You know those search terms usually will automatically pop up once you begin typing something on Google. That’s Google Suggest. How does it work? It’s an aggregate of the most popular searches based on past requests from users. In other words, Google doesn’t actually generate those suggestions itself, nor does some magical alien in its California labs. But somehow, somebody’s not happy with it, thus making the Superior Court of Paris to order Google to shell out €5,000 ($6,721) to an unnamed gentleman who claimed that searches for his name automatically led to a list of suggestions that were damaging to his reputation.

Funny thing here is, said gentleman actually had been “condemned to a prison sentence on charges of corrupting a minor” earlier in his life. Imagine that — humans interested in his story were searching for his name along with “rape,” “rapist” and “prison.” Well, I guess this can only happen in France. How on Earth can you make a child molester or rapist’s reputation any worse? Did he ask his fiancé to do a Google search on him? Anyone who actually searched for his name would come up with the fact that he abused a child and was convicted for it. What do the suggestions before the search matter? But I think this guy is so vain to search his own name. Gosh… Time to search my own name! Good news is, Google is appealing. Aha!
