In Sweden, laptop thieves return your data on a USB stick

Funny story we have here, of a very considerate law breaker. An anonymous Swedish professor informed his local newspaper of a recent ‘lost item’ story of his.
His journey started at a laundry room, when he hid his backpack under a stairwell while taking care of some chores. Obviously the story proceed that his bag was gone. After making a report to the police, our professor here returned to the scene of crime to find that his stuff had been returned, except for his laptop. As there’s nothing much he can do, he continued his ‘boring’ academic life.
Life goes on, but the story continues too. The thief mailed him a USB memory stick with all his data on it. Ironically enough, the USB key was one the prof had lying around inside his bag already, and the thief did what the owner never bothered to: back up all data on a separate drive. How kind. But can somebody trace finger prints of the envelope, or back-track the mail? We just want to thank the dude.
