A challenger has arrived! Nvidia GeForce GTX 595, a worthy challenger for the HD5970.

A challenger has arrived! Nvidia GeForce GTX 595, a worthy challenger for the HD5970.

Nvidia gave AMD an open hand slap in the face when they launched their GeForce GTX580. The card literally receives critical acclaim and good reviews, as outperforming its older sibling the GTX480, yet being quieter and cooler, and also iron-out some serious issues with the power-draw and thermal characteristics of previous generation GeForce. It comes second to none in the DirectX 11 Kings of King, and the only challenger comes in the form of AMD’s Radeon 5970, which is essentially a dual GPU card. The GTX 580 only loses out by a slight bit! Now, Nvidia is giving AMD a back hand slap. Read more…

LaCie begs for a premium for one of these aluminium keychain with SSD chips

Typical teenagers would scout for handy drives below €20, but the handy drives that we’re going to introduce today are not your typical handy drive that your mum would bring around. Perhaps you can classify it as a premium price inevitable for early adopters of compact USB SSD drives, but we’ve seen cheaper ones, so this is probably something for James Bond. LaCie’s latest solid state drive is made of aluminium, but that’s not all, because it boast transfer speed of up to 260MB/s. Size ranges from 30GB, 60GB, to 120GB capacities, with a rugged metal case and USB 3.0 interface. But that’s not all. The metal stick comes with 256-bit of AES encryption and 4GB of online-accessible ‘Wuala’ storage. LaCie will be asking for $149.99, $249.99 or $479.99 from you if you’re interested to swipe your card for one of them. Makes you look like Bond, James Bond. Now, if only I drive an Aston Martin, then I’ll get one of these.

London’s turn to get the 80-Gigapixel treatment

London’s turn to get the 80-Gigapixel treatment

Previously we’ve seen Budapest getting the luxury treatment of 70-Gigapixel panoramic shots. Now Jeffrey Martin goes to shot London in her full 80-Gigapixel glory. Mr. Martin is the founder of 360 Cities, a website dedicated to 360 degree panoramas, and the latest in the gallery takes the crown as the largest panorama image ever created. However, this race seemed to be charging with full momentum and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the crown being lifted off from this one in the very near future. If you remember, earlier this year 26-Gigapixel image was the largest, and look what few months have that number increased in such tremendous amount. Read more…

Toshiba’s latest 2.5-inch hard drive is made to withstand heat and chill for you, nonstop!

November 19th, 2010

Toshiba’s latest 2.5-inch hard drive is made to withstand heat and chill for you, nonstop!

This is best said as not your ordinary consumer hard drive. Toshiba market this “for rugged operating environments” with continuous 24-hours operation whole year long. The new MK1060GSCX from Toshiba is a 100GB 2.5-inch SATA HDD that the company claims can withstand -15 to +70 degrees Celsius as well as operate at expanded altitudes. The sacrifice you make for that, however, is in speed — the 4,200rpm drive has a 12msec seek time and 1.5Gbit/s interface speed. Toshiba will also offer an even smaller 80GB MK8050GACY version with a PATA interface. No word on pricing, but Toshiba expects the new drives to hit sometime in December. Not sure why anyone would actually one to have this since any latest SSD with ‘corporate product’ status will do just about the same, with faster speed given. Well, unless you’re still running on a legacy notebook, and need it to run 24-hours. Not a very wise move though.

Hitachi throws in the first 3TB hard drive of the block with 6Gbps

Hitachi throws in the first 3TB hard drive of the block with 6Gbps

I guess this would mark the assault of 3TB hard drives in the market. Hitachi was the first in the block to throw out a 3.5-inch 2TB hard drive at 7,200RPM, and now they seem to be keeping the lead by introducing the first 3TB for the mass. The company’s new Deskstar 7k3000 model will represent the company in the front line warfare of hard drives, not only as the first 3TB brick, but as the first with a 6Gbps SATA interface too!

The drive utilizes five-platter drive packing a 64MB cache buffer, with idle power drawing 6.8W of your miniature arc reactor. Hitachi claims it to have an eco-friendly, halogen-free design. Rumour has it to be around £200, or $320, but Hitachi has yet to affirm the official price and release date.

Elecom's Actrail headphones for your tiny iPod Shuffle, only

Elecom has a new wireless headphone for your iPod. It’s called the Actrial wireless headphone, and you should probably consider it if you want to show off to the rest of the world that you’re on of the 70-percent iPod users in this world. It’s wireless, Bluetooth-less ear muffs designed for your little evil iPod. The company mentioned that only the latest iPod shuffle is ‘officially’ supported, but don’t whine or brag if you can fit in your older iPods, though we can suggest some duct tapes for your ear, and a mask for your face. ¥4,200 for this ‘wireless’ neckband headphone, and you can probably find it only in Japan.
