Google wants Nokia onboard?

Google wants Nokia onboard?

Andy Rubin, vice president of Google’s mobile platforms, commented during a conference, that the company is eager for Nokia to jump onboard their Android ship. Analysts have expressed continuing concerns about Nokia’s abysmal smartphone performance in the U.S., and are hoping that the company’s recently appointed top leadership can change the downward trend.

Rubin is hoping that the new leadership of Nokia will consider Android as a platform to adopt, as their Symbian platform is facing a hard time catching up with Android and iOS, besides the emergence of Windows Phone 7.

Asked pointedly whether Google has discussed Android with Nokia, Rubin answered: “I think the company has new leadership and … they are evaluating what their options are … I’m a big proponent of Android and I hope they adopt it.”

About whether a meeting took place, Rubin only said: “I’m not going to talk in detail.”

A Nokia spokeswoman refused to comment Wednesday on whether executives from the two firms have discussed Android adoption by Nokia. Analysts speculated that the two firms have met — or will meet — to discuss Android. Such a discussion makes sense given Nokia’s current mamagement transformation, they add.

Nokia is clearly the leading mobile phone manufacturer worldwide, holding about 34% of the overall market and 33% of the global smartphone market, according to recent figures released by Gartner and IDC respectively. However, Nokia trails other smartphone OSs and devices in the U.S., and does not even register on some surveys, including ComScore’s most recent ranking.

Frankly it’ll not be easy for Nokia to abandon their Symbian platform and pursue a new future, but I believe that it’ll at least be a good way to penetrate the smartphone market.

Amazon offers refunds or replacements for problem-causing Kindle covers

We’ve all heard of news related to case this year, about how a simple rubber case solving a very big antenna issue. But rarely do we hear news of a case causing technical problems to an electronic device. But indeed there is, and here we see a number of users have been saying about Amazon’s own Kindle Leather Cover.

Apparently, the problem stems from the metal hooks used in the case — they’re designed to conduct electricity in the lighted version of the case, but in the non-lighted version they’re reportedly causing Kindles to freeze or reboot. While the company hasn’t officially confirmed the problem, Amazon has told PC Magazine that its engineering team is looking into the issue, and that it will offer a refund or replacement to anyone experiencing a problem with the case, no matter when it was purchased.

Nokia to go for Windows Phone 7, Symbian and Meego dead

Nokia to go for Windows Phone 7, Symbian and Meego dead

After strongly refusing to join Android and Windows Phone 7, and staying true to Symbian and MeeGo, and after buying up Symbian Foundation for software development purpose, now Nokia is in talk with Microsoft? Where does this come from?

Well, Mobile-Review’s Eldar Murtazin has claimed that Nokia has been in talks with Microsoft the past months, regarding expansion of their cooperation. The talks were initiated by the new Nokia management. And they are talking not about the technology exchange or more Microsoft apps on Nokia phones. They are talking about the creation of new line of Windows Phone devices, which could be sold under Nokia’s brand, via Nokia distribution channels and have some typical Nokia features.

Nokia Windows Phone might sound like a cool thing after all, as Nokia always have a great hardware, but they lack the software. Then again, we should take this with a pint of salt.

Will Tegra 2 be Honeycomb’s reference platform?

Will Tegra 2 be Honeycomb’s reference platform?

Citigroup’s Glen Yeung says that Samsung has “placed a sizeable order with Nvidia for Tegra 2 chips in the first half of 2011, geared for both tablets and smartphones,” and BMO Capital Markets analyst Ambrish Srivastava anticipates the next Galaxy Tab will be one of the devices that use it. What does that mean? Well, the next Galaxy Tab 2 might be powered by Nvidia’s Tegra 2, but then again Samsung is supposed to be producing their own dual-core chip, so why the change? Glen Yeung also says that Google has made Tegra the reference design for Honeycomb, aka Android 3.0, and so Tegra 2 may sound like a fast track to victory in the budding tablet space.

European Nissan Leaf gets always-on connection, lets you turn up the AC wirelessly

European Nissan Leaf gets always-on connection, lets you turn up the AC wirelessly

It might be white Christmas in UK right now, but not where I live. My car tends to get quite hot and humid after under the sun the whole day. If only I have this new Nissan Leaf, then I’ll be able to chill the cabin for a sec before I get in, you know, by using my phone when I’m still in the office. But… I’m not in Europe.

Nissan’s new electric car, the Leaf will get an always-on connection for their European model, and it’s going to be standard. No monthly fees, unlike Chevrolet Volt’s OnStar app. Telenor Connexion will be providing the wireless connectivity in UK, which will enable a mobile phone or PC to access the Carwings Data Center remotely, to check charging status and modify the car’s climate controls. In an EV the car’s heating and cooling can be two of the biggest sinks for the onboard battery packs, so this ability to get the car up or down to temp while it’s still plugged in could help you spend more kW driving and less on acclimatizing.

The TRON bag that you must have

The TRON bag that you must have

These days, we have Xbox 360 controller with Tron lights, mouse and mousepad with Tron lights, and keyboards with Tron lights. We have bikes that imitates the Tron bike (though you can’t create walls with it), and we have the Tron shirt to make you like a program (or user). Or you can probably claim that you’re the only ISO program left alive. But you still need a TRON bag to complete you coolness.

“The secret is electro luminescent wire and batteries. Ladyada and Becky Stern used the wire to make a Tron-flavored messenger bag. Once you get the technique down, you can use electro luminescent wire to spice up any clothing or fabric items.”

Check out how she does the TRON bag.

Cooler Master paints its HAF X some green

It seemed that Cooler Master is very obsessed with their HAF (High Air Flow) series casings. And just like how they used to paint some of their Cosmos casings with some Nvidia logos and theme color, the new HAF X that has been their flagship for the popular HAF series, is also getting a slap of some Nvidia green-ness.
