LG Optimus 2X leads the dual-core race

December 16th, 2010

Next year will be the year where smartphones and tablets shine and go amazing. Why? That’s because we’ll be getting blistering fast processors, and Dual Cores! That’s the main point! And we shall start with LG. the Korean electronics giant has yet again pulled off a ‘first’ for their title. Yes, this is the LG Optimus 2X, aka the LG Star. This phone will literally put all current smartphone to shame. All thanks to the Nvidia Tegra 2 chip in this phone, because Tegra 2 will give anything your current phone’s running an inferiority complex.

The Optimus 2X runs on the Android 2.2 aka Froyo, and will be shown to public in the upcoming CES. By then, probably the retail product will have Gingerbread. The phone is powered by a Tegra 2 chip, featuring a 1GHz dual-core processor under its cover.

The phone is huge, as most Android phones tend to be. It has a 4-inch capacitive screen with multitouch and 800 x 480 resolution. All thanks to the dual-core processor, the Optimus 2X is able to playback 1080p contents with no lag, and supply visuals to larger displays thanks to the HDMI mirroring, though I still think 1080p content on a 4-inch screen is overkill. The HDMI connection also allows you to play Android games on a larger screen while using the phone as a controller.

Internal memory reaches 8GB, and there’s the 8-Megapixel camera at the back a 1.3-Megapixel camera in the front for video calling, and cam-whoring if you want.

The Optimus 2X is slated for a 2011 release in Asia and Europe after its launch in CES 2011, and will ship with Android 2.2 (Froyo), but of course, a 2.3 (Gingerbread) update will follow. LG may even have Gingerbread coming with the retail unit, but there’s no guarantee. There’s been no announcement about a U.S. release yet. Specs below:

  • 1Ghz Dual-core Processor (NVIDIA Tegra 2)
  • 4-inch WVGA screen
  • 8GB memory (up to 32GB via microSD)
  • 1,500 mAh battery
  • 8 megapixel rear camera and 1.3 megapixel front camera
  • HDMI mirroring
  • 1080p MPEG-4/H.264 playback and recording

Early T-800 leg muscle prototype at the work

Early T-800 leg muscle prototype at the work

Tokyo University’s ISI Lab has been working on a robot that can actually run, ever since 2007. Called the Athlete Robot, it’s slightly different from your typical robot with mechanical devices at connected joints, like Honda’s ASIMO.

The way they need to run is to have movements nearly like humans, and that’s where the AR gets its concept from: human muscles. While it doesn’t really receive the humanoid treatment and shape, it works very much like how a human does, at least the legs.

Google delays Fiber to early 2011

December 16th, 2010

Google delays Fiber to early 2011World domination plans delayed by a few months. Google announced its intention to venture into ISP territory back in February called Fiber, where they’ll deliver broadband to between 50,000 and 500,000 users, which they promised 100 times faster than typical Internet access.

However, their plans have been hit by a number slightly larger than they expected, forcing them to push the project towards next year. Fiber will be coming to one of more than 1,100 applying communities sometime in early 2011. Read more…

Aigo's iPhone 4 battery cases is here to save your iPhone from running out of juice

Aigo's iPhone 4 battery cases is here to save your iPhone from running out of juice

There are already a few choices when it comes to battery cases for the power hungry iPhone 4, like the Exolife Exogear, the Mophie Juice Pack Air, and the Mili PowerSpring. But now comes a new challenge:, the Aigo aiPower i616.

Aigo claims to be able to double your battery life with this new aiPower i616. The i616 has a hidden USB ribbon cable for both charging and data built right into the case. Should you want for a longer sync cable than it provides on its own, there’s also a second microUSB port built into the left side, as well as a switch for the external 1500mAh battery and a handy button to display its current level of charge. The aiPower i616 comes with the MSRP of $80.

There’s also the cheaper InCase Snap Battery if you want to save that $20. It adds a 900mAh battery in a soft-touch frame that InCase claims is the slimmest around. The case doesn’t seem to give a sufficient protection to the phone as it only covers the corners and rear of the phone, and is too slim to give any sense of security. But the good thing is that it keeps the sleek look of the phone.

Mark Zuckerberg is the man yo, says Time!

Woot! The name is out! Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is the Person of the Year in 2010, says Time. Too bad I didn’t make it. Anyway, Time says it’s because his creation has “wired together a twelfth of humanity”. Haters gonna hate, and sad comments are already popping out on the net saying that runner up Julian Assange, the Wikileak guy should’ve been the real person to won that title. After shaking up international relations all year long and claiming the Singaporean leader calling everyone stupid, Julian Assange is having a rough year. The runner up list also shows Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai, who also had another rough year, as always in Afghanistan. Head over to the source for the full list.

Apple TV updated to 4.1.1

December 16th, 2010

Apple TV updated to 4.1.1Apple has given an update to their Apple TV’s firmware, which purportedly solves “an issue that causes some high-definition TVs to incorrectly display at 480p,” as well as an issue that “may cause a movie or TV show to be re-downloaded.” Apple also ‘tried’ to correct a nagging colour/banding problem with their Apple TV in this update, but users have reported on Apple Insider’s forum that some of them still face the same problem, though most of them are using HDMI-to-DVI adapters. Well, all these are more important and critical updates in contrast to enabling 1080P, but there’s no harm in letting me dream of that right?

MSI to launch two new tablets in early 2011

December 16th, 2010

Need for Speed Hot Pursuit

Earlier in the middle of this year we saw the market flooded with concepts and prototypes of tablets running Windows 7 powered by Atom, and Android powered by ARM. Though the Android part did flooded the market with real final products, their performance were rather bland and not even near to the shores of Apple’s iPad. But the other tablet, running Windows’s slate operating system didn’t actually quite make it to the market in a big way. But we will actually see more of them in 2011, at least claimed MSI. Oh, and let’s not forget Tegra 2 tablets invasion too.

Well, MSI is planning to resurrect those with some slight improvements for the upcoming CES, and this time it’s gearing up to actually release them both. First up is the 10.1-inch Windows 7 Home Premium version, which will be one of the first Intel Atom Oak Trail-powered devices out there, says the company. According to MSI’s Director of North American Sales Andy Tung, Intel’s tablet solution does show both battery life and performance improvements over the current Atom chips, but it’s “not extremely significant.”

Beyond that, the tablet measures less than an inch thick and will have a 1024 x 600-resolution, multitouch display, mini-HDMI and mini-USB ports, an SD card slot, and an accelerometer. Tung wasn’t ready to reveal pricing, but he said it should be available in early 2011.

On the Android side of things, MSI’s got a dual-core Tegra 2-powered 10.1-inch, 1280 x 800-resolution slate prepped with the same selection of ports and features — although, this one is slightly thinner and also has a drop-proof design. Thus far the Android tablet will be running on Gingerbread, but if Google is in time, they won’t hesitate to jump into Honeycomb. If Honeycomb is available by the February / March timeframe MSI will go with that option — however, if it’s not, it will go with Gingerbread, so it can hit the market earlier in 2011.

Microsoft’s Kinect got blinged up to blind you

Microsoft’s Kinect got blinged up to blind you

Well, the Xbox Kinect is a very awesome toy, but what if it tries to blind you, and record all your clumsy and stupid yet funny act after being blinded by it? Yes, here’s one Kinect that tries to do just that, blind you! DS Styles has a bag of 5,000 Swarovski crystals, and they’ve just blinged up a Kinect with those 5,000 stones. Like how stupid girls go bling up their phones and cameras and everything else. But at least you’re getting a very unique Kinect that all your friends will stare at, instead of playing that new skipping game. And oh, it only cost $632, so you can probably consider that a steal.

HTC Hub update to tell us of the coming rain, easily

HTC Hub update to tell us of the coming rain, easily

HTC has updated their HTC Hub app for Windows Phone 7 device manufactured by HTC. This update is very pleasing indeed, as you’re getting the current weather condition and temperature as well as the forecasted highs and lows, above all the tiles and the main screen. Totally skips the need to launch HTC’s Hub app, which is heavily animated and sometimes annoying too. Now, if only more developers can take advantage of Microsoft’s live tiles concept.
