RunCore 1TB SATA III SSD

RunCore 1TB SATA III SSD

We’ve seen a huge amount of SSD flocking into the market, but all of them are 2.5-inch drives that’ll happily fit in your laptop. But now we have a new SSD powerhouse from RunCore that is rather more enthusiast than your usual vanillas. It takes up a desktop standard 3.5-inch slot and is said to rely on “substantial” sized PCBs on both sides of its cool, cerulean silicon. It’s a SATA III drive offering a similarly substantial 1TB of storage, even fronting dual SandForce SF-1222 controllers for integrated RAID 0 performances. However, having the speed of 500MB/s, this guy is a real big bully compared to the usual 2.5 kids. Then again, the price would probably scare of the flocks of nerds staring at it once it’s fully announced at CeBIT in March next year.

Next iPad to have front and back camera, coming in April?

December 11th, 2010

Next iPad to have front and back camera, coming in April? Some countries (like mine) have just got their iPad launched, but rumours of the next iPad have already begun emerging, and this ain’t ordinary rumour. Reuters has cited from no less than four sources from within Apple’s component suppliers, and all have expressed their belief that the fruity tablet will get a refresh sometime in 2011, probably in the early quarters.

These sources stated that the new iPad will have both a back-mounted and a front-facing module, with Largan and Genius identified as having received new orders from Cupertino for churning out imagers. They also mentioned that production at places like Wintek and Simplo is expected to ramp up in the first quarter, and that parts are targeted for a February shipment in preparation for an April iPad refresh. Well, these are still rumours so we should just enjoy the bad weather first before wondering about the next iPad.

Windows Phone 7 copying and pasting demoed

Windows Phone 7 copying and pasting demoed

Thus far Windows Phone 7 has been rather impressive, but sadly there’s no ‘cut n paste’. Probably there’s no place to squeeze in the scissor and glue to the phone, despite being at this advance cyber age. For those ‘commoners’ your Windows Phone 7 handset might not have ‘cut n paste’, but developer devices have already started receiving an update that includes the much awaited copy and paste function which Microsoft promised. Have a glimpse of how it works in the rather simple video below.

Google Places Kit getting distributed. Foursquare? Meh!

December 10th, 2010

Google Places Kit getting distributed. Foursquare? Meh!Swiping your iPhone to unlock and tapping on Foursquare to check in? That’s so… months ago. What’s more ridiculous if the place that you are at isn’t listed. Make things even more troublesome. I foresee NFC to be more fun and yet simpler to play with. Imagine every cafés and shops that you go to have a “Recommended on Google Places” signboard, things will be more fun. Just get your smartphone near to that NFC chip, and you’ll be able to ‘check-in’ like Foursquare, besides getting a link to their Facebook page which you can proceed to click “Like”, and also a link to their corporate blog which you can have a look at their latest products and offers.

Google’s latest smartphone, the Nexus S, which was dubbed “Pure Google” experience, has an NFC chip embedded on it. Just hold your handset up to the black dot, and voila, your phone gets a “tag”. Google’s now distributing the signs on a trial basis to Portland, Oregon businesses as part of a larger Google Places kit, though it doesn’t explain how (or if) they’ll be able to program the chips. Now would probably be a great time to try out this, by simply signing-up at the link below. Read more…

Transformer: Dark of the Moon first trailer released

The third Transformer’s movie, Dark of the Moon has finally been released. After months of shooting, the movie has finally reached post production status, and will be on silver screens in summer next year. Surprisingly, a two-minute and a half-length trailer and there’s not a single missile or explosion. Let’s check out the trailer, and see how the moon and Apollo 11 can be related to cars and robots.

Major electronic giants dropping VGA by 2015, what’s next?

Major electronic giants dropping VGA by 2015, what’s next?

Analog VGA has been around for more than 20 years, and at this age it’s no surprise that a group of consumer electronics titans have declared dropping support for VGA by 2015. Among the crowd is AMD, Intel, Dell, Lenovo, Samsung and LG. Reason given is that the legacy port is outshined by current technology’s increased energy efficiency, smaller size, and support for higher-resolutions. Well, all the better right?

AMD plans to lead the charge by starting the VGA removal process in 2013 and even intends to go the extra mile by stripping DVI-I and low voltage differential signalling technology (LVDS) support too. It’s good to know that AMD is hard supporting more cutting edge standards like Displayport 1.2 and HDMI 1.4a, which I fully support. But Apple would probably be pondering what took them so long.

YouTube lifting 15-minute time limit for some videos

YouTube lifting 15-minute time limit for some videos

Uploading videos to YouTube sometimes seemed quite troublesome if your video is pretty long, as there’s a 15-minute time length restriction imposed, unless you have an account that’s unique, like a partner of YouTube or directors/editors accounts. But now YouTube will be slowly expanding to allow more people to upload longer videos.

Joshua Siegel, a product manager at YouTube told The New York Times that the company now has copyright issues under control via ContentID, which scans roughly 100 years’ worth of uploaded video per day in an attempt to fend off violations. There’s no word on when the time limit will be further lifted, but sooner or later you’ll get it.

WWF, a new PDF that you can’t print.

December 10th, 2010

WWF, a new PDF that you can’t print.Huge junk of trees got cut down every day, but from what I know, every one tree that got chopped, another two were planted back. What on earth is WWF thinking when they made this? A PDF file format that cannot print? That’s just adding a few more steps to EXPORT + PRINT. Obviously the people never knew the “Print Screen” key on the top right too. But it’s still a gooding cause, at least a good try.

“The WWF format is a PDF that cannot be printed out. It’s a simple way to avoid unnecessary printing. So here’s your chance to save trees and help the environment. Decide for yourself which documents don’t need printing out – then simply save them as WWF.”

At least this is a good preventive measure to stop some people from simply printing every email that they received, even when some of them are one-liner asking about a certain project’s status. For now, it’s only readable on a Mac, which means that WWF files also cannot be printed from a PC. That’s great news. Also might stop some students from printing every single reading material from the lecturers and professors. But then since hackers are mostly youngsters, I won’t bet on that.
