Phenom II X6 1100T review roundup: AMD's fastest desktop processor to date

Phenom II X6 1100T review roundup: AMD's fastest desktop processor to date

When it comes to CPU, AMD has never really close up the gap that Intel made when it comes to performance. Knowing that they still can’t catch up with the chipzilla, AMD has chosen to closer the gap in terms of price. The latest Phenom II X6 1100T from AMD has significantly “improved the value of these high-end desktop processors by making the 1090T BE model even cheaper.”

AMD’s latest flagship has been launched, and it is indeed the fastest processor from AMD to date (the Phenom II X6 1100T), but it still isn’t anywhere near Intel’s pricey Core i7 980X. Besides launching the X6 1100T, there’s also the more affordable 3.4GHz Phenom II X2 565 Black Edition ($115) and 3.3GHz Athlon II X3 455 ($87) tagging along. Would be a great choice if you’re looking for something bang for buck and is tight in the budget. Read more…

No dual boot for Chrome OS laptops, but you get live customer supports instead

No dual boot for Chrome OS laptops, but you get live customer supports instead

And here’s more info regarding Google’s ‘unnamed’ Cr-48 laptop. Besides getting 2-years Internet gratis, for 100MB at least, Google’s also providing live customer support for Cr-48 owners, which Google claims to have reached ‘over thousands’ at the moment, and more to come. Google will provide live support for those that receive a Cr-48 and help with any and all issues. However, they fail to mention what happens after the 2 years relationship. Probably another “extended warranty promotion” package.

Besides saying that Acer and Samsung (just examples, there’s others on the wagon too) will have Atom-powered laptops with Chrome OS in mid of 2011, Google also stressed that the laptop will not support dual boot environments in ‘most’ scenarios. Google probably is stating clearly that major manufacturers won’t be shipping laptops with Google and Microsoft operating systems living side by side. And I wonder, is that Cr-48 made by Samsung? The keyboard design looks awfully similar to Samsung’s design, and since Nexus S (aka Nexus Two) is made by Samsung, there’s more reason to believe that this is also collaboration between Google and the Korean giant.

A sneak peak close-up of Nokia X7 before it gets burned

A sneak peak close-up of Nokia X7 before it gets burned

The last time the dude from Eldar Murtazin got hold of the then unannounced Nokia N8, he didn’t really like it, and ended up burning it. This time, he’s showing us a glimpse of the front and back of the X7. The X7 looks quite decent on the front which shows less buttons, unlike its nerdy big brother the N8 which has lots of buttons. The back looks rather dull though, despite showing clearly the 8-Megapixel sensor of the phone. Could do better with a one-tone design for the back though. Anyway, the phone seemed very final, so we may probably see this phone coming before the end of this year, or early next year.

LaCie’s new Tank enclosure protects your data from kitty scratch

LaCie’s new Tank enclosure protects your data from kitty scratch

These days thumb drives are just not enough for youngsters, and external hard disk seemed to be rather common. But they’re still portable bricks with needles, so we still need to protect them if we carry them around nearly anywhere. It’s probably a good idea to protect our portable hard drives like a tough tank. Like this new LaCie Tank. It’s robust, rugged, and waterproof for any dangerous condition you might be in. These days the world’s so dangerous, you never know when you’ll cross fangs with a stranger, and you might just win the fight by hitting your enemy with this LaCie Tank, since red bricks won’t always be there for you.

The internal foam cubes can be repositioned in order to house a top-secret external HDD, your cousin’s DSi or your wife’s gargantuan wedding band. Or anything important to you that has the shape of those mini bricks. Its IP-63 certified is able to protect against dust and also some of Justin Timberlake’s river, and it measures 1.6- x 4.8- x 7.3-inches. The sad thing is that the warranty stops after 365 days, instead of the “standard” 3 years limited-warranty, but don’t you worry, because you’re buying “a fortress”. Good thing is that it’s priced at a very ‘decent’ £19.99 ($31).

LG’s new LU3000 does 1080p on its puny 3.8-inch screen

LG’s new LU3000 does 1080p on its puny 3.8-inch screen

720p on your iPhone 4? Meh! That’s so yesterday. These days every Tom, Dick, Harry, Jane and Lucy’s phone can produce their own homemade .3gp at 720p quality. Let’s look over to South Korea. Yes, there seemed to be a political tension there, but if you look further into it. Yes. There you go with 1080p on a phone. That’s LG’s LU3000.

The phone comes with a very standard 1GHz TI OMAP3630 chip, allowing it to jot down 1080p video playback on its spec sheet. That goes great with the built-in HDMI port and DLNA wireless capabilities. The 3.8-inch screen offers an 800 x 480 resolution, there’s a 5 megapixel camera around the back, and a mildly skinned Android 2.2 performs the OS duties.

The phone sells for ₩ 800,000 (roughly USD 705) next week at the company’s country, but it seemed that they’re back at it again. South Korea only. No love for other countries it seemed. Reminds me of the time when Samsung sells shitloads of phones that are Korea-only back then.

Google unveils Cr-48, the first Chrome OS laptop

Google unveils Cr-48, the first Chrome OS laptop

Only for developers though. This is the same move that Google took when they launched Android, and I still think it’s a bloody good idea. It gives the developers a starting momentum to roll the apps. You won’t want your newly launched operating system to have no support from software developers, right? Google will distribute the laptop through its Chrome OS Pilot Program, in a sort of public beta. There’s no way to pay for the laptop at the moment. You join Google’s program, and they’ll send you this black book to you. Of course, the thing is limited. Read more…

Buy Chrome OS netbook; get free 100MB Internet connection from Verizon

Buy Chrome OS netbook; get free 100MB Internet connection from Verizon

When Google announce their Chrome OS yesterday, it’s obvious that the operating system relies heavily on Internet connection and a very stable one too if possible. But Google’s plans for the Chrome OS seemed to be delivered very swiftly, as they’ve managed to make sure that every Chrome OS netbook (if you call a 12-inch reference system a netbook instead of a notebook) sold in the US will be well equipped with an Internet connection.

Since they want you to always be connected, they’ve teamed up with Verizon to help make sure that you do. Buy a Chrome OS netbook, and you’ll get 100MB of free Verizon data each moth for 24 months. $9.99 will give you unlimited access for a single day and there are no contracts to fiddle with. Obviously, this will be US-only at the moment, so we’ll probably see similar partnership from Google and other nation’s 3G ISP in the near future.

Chrome OS announced, coming in mid-2011

Chrome OS announced, coming in mid-2011

Google has just demoed their Chrome OS on reference hardware at their Chrome event. It seemed that the Chrome OS will be heavily cloud-based, so good luck running on it if you don’t have a good broadband connection. Installation seemed to be very simple, with a few clicks, and the new Chrome OS will be installed onto your computer by pulling all your personal settings from the cloud. Google seemed to be emphasizing the OS with speed, as the demo machine was able to come back up from sleep almost instantly. The OS will be automatically updated every few weeks — the goal is for it to get faster over time, not slower, which seemed to make a joke out of Windows. Read more…

Chrome’s Web Store officially launched

Chrome’s Web Store officially launched

Google has officially launched the Chrome Web Store for their Chrome browser, which will host lots of paid and free apps for your Chrome. Something like an iPad apps store for browsers, but much tailored for mice and keyboards. Audio can run in the background even if you move to another tab. There’s offline mode, too. App purchases are tied to your Google account, naturally. Thus far, it seemed to only work on Chrome, but Google did state in their Q&A that it’s built with standard web technologies,” and will work with all compatible browsers. As of now it’s only applicable for US though. So, what’s your take on this “app filled world”? Seemed like what Steve Jobs said is very true. There’s an app for that™.

Acer introduces new Revo 100, looks like your ugly Blu-ray player

Acer introduces new Revo 100, looks like your ugly Blu-ray player

Acer has introduced a new Revo for your living room, but this time it’s getting bigger, nearly doubles the size. But please forgive Acer, because they’ve included a funky RevoPad for you to fiddle around with. This is essentially a new multimedia PC called the Revo 100, which has a very odd combination of an AMD Athlon II Neo dual-core processor and an Nvidia ION 2 graphic chip in it, along with the common 4GB memory, 750GB hard drive, a combo Blu-ray drive, memory card reader, WiFi, HDMI port, and runs on Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit OS.

Usually we see Intel’s Atom paired with ION 2, or AMD’s latest Bobcat platform, but Acer as somehow opt for this weird setup. But let’s forget about that, because Acer has included a slide-out RevoPad, which can function as either a multitouch gesture pad or, when activated, a QWERTY keyboard with lit-up keys on the same surface. Will be a nice thing to play with when the movie gets boring. It seemed that UK will be getting this baby first, at a price of GBP 599 (around USD 942).
