Nvidia GTX560 coming in January

Nvidia GTX560 coming in January

Nvidia’s GTX580 and GTX570 are already out in the market, so there’s no surprise that the next in line will be the GTX560. The GTX460 released back then was a key product for Nvidia, as it gives the green company an edge in fighting AMD. Power efficiency combined with excellent performance, which really gave AMD a hard time. Now we’ll be seeing the successor to this great product.

The GPU-Z screenshot here shows that the upcoming GTX560 will be based on the GF114 and will have 384 CUDA cores. It’ll be coming sometime in January. If you notice, GTX580 and GTX570 are based on the refined GF110 which is from the GF100. This GTX560 however will be based on the GF114 which is probably a follow-up of the GF104, which back then was a retuned GF110, so we should expect some slight difference in performance and design of the core.

The GTX560 will have 384 Stream Processor (SM) running at 820MHz for the GPU. That’s the full 16 SMs like the other GeForce 5-series products. There’s 1640MHz for the shaders and 4000MHz for the 1024MB GDDR5 memory paired up with a 256-bit memory interface. The GTX 560 name isn’t carved in stone and although partners are internally referred to it as the GTX 560, Nvidia didn’t officially announce the name and the card could easily become the GTX 570 SE for that matter.

Of course, these specs are what partners got from Nvidia. Unfortunately, the card is scheduled for January next year so we’ll have to wait a while before we can talk about concrete information. This will be a very exciting product, especially for FAM users. Will we see a 15,000PPD card here?

Why driving in snow is not a good idea

December 29th, 2010

Christmas and Snow, for some this White Christmas is a dream come true. As romantic and jolly as it gets, sometimes snowing is not as fun as it seemed, if you’ve been experiencing it over dozen of years. Here’s an example of why some people wants to escape winter to tropical countries with beaches. Look at the innocent Audi; nobody can really help that poor baby. Super advance traction control, anti-lock braking system, stability management, slip differential, they’re all jokes when it comes to this.

Do not ever steal a computer from a hacker

December 29th, 2010

Here’s a dude who gives a speech at DEFCON, which literally makes him a very awesome hacker. Who the heck get to speak at DEFCON anyway? You should never mess with a hacker, unless you’re very confidence that you’re a tier above him. But when you’re not, and you steal his computer, you’re in pretty much big trouble. He shared his story at DEFCON of how his old Mac pc got stolen by some dude and pop up from nowhere two years later. Though, I must insist that this ‘Guzman’ guy might not be the real thief, as he might have bought a stolen computer from a pawn shop for a very cheap price. Anyway, the video is very entertaining and somewhat educational too.

P/S: save your life some three minutes by skipping directly to 3:15 of the video.

World’s first Christmas tree lighting powered by an eel

World’s first Christmas tree lighting powered by an eel

It’s good that this is not another news of an eel shoved into the ass of a drunk dude, and killed him, but nonetheless it’s still very much related to this very unique ‘fish’. Here’s some crazy group of people who used electric eel for ‘good cause’. Alternative power source or green power as some call it, but still a very cool move, and again this stunt is pulled by the crazy Japs.

The special Christmas tree in Japan is housed in an aquarium, as that’s the power source’s home. The holiday tree’s lights are hooked up to an aluminum electrode inside the tank of an electric eel. Every time the eel moves, it sends an 800 watt zap through the water and makes the lights sparkle for a moment. Funny that this actually works, true Science theory applied here.

The tree also has an annoying singing Santa and a mat nearby that allows visitors to help the eel generate electricity for the tree by running — or dancing — in place. The inventor of the eel-powered tree seems to have grand visions of where his gadget will go in the future. “If we could gather all the electric eels from all around the world, we would be able to light up an unimaginably large Christmas tree. I’d love to see the huge flash of light it made on the Earth, from somewhere else in the universe,” he said in an interview.

Carbon fiber toilet seat for golden buns

Do you hate to see your toilet bowl getting yellowish after a few years’ of brutal usage? Feels disgusting and a sore sight if there are guests coming. Sometimes they also break easily if you’re rather ‘overweight’, or if you squat above them very often, though that’s a very rare case. Here’s a toilet seat made totally from carbon fiber. Yes, the very luxurious material usually found in sports cars. If you need every inch of your house to look luxurious, then the asking price of $279 for this toilet seat shouldn’t be a problem.

Apple confirms it's sold one million new Apple TVs

Apple confirms it's sold one million new Apple TVs

This may not be able to compete with the amount of iPhones sold by Apple within days, but still an impressive amount considering Apple call this a “hobby”, which usually gives an impression of a lowered expectation sales. Apple said last week that it expected its new Apple TV to cross the one million mark in sales before Christmas, and it’s now quietly confirmed that it has passed that mark during the weekends.

Roku is a rival when it comes to media streamer, but its CEO noted that the introduction of the new Apple TV actually seems to have led to a spike in sales of its own media streamers.

Facebook overtakes Yahoo to be the third most trafficked website in the world

Facebook overtakes Yahoo to be the third most trafficked website in the world

Right, this comes as no surprise, but then again who still uses Yahoo! these days. ComScore — a common metric used to measure internet traffic — is showing off some impressive stats these days. In the month of November, for instance, Facebook overtook Yahoo! for the first time in worldwide traffic, with the social network nabbing 648 million unique visitors while the portal named after Gulliver’s Travels pulled in 630 million. That makes Facebook the third most visited site, right after Google and Microsoft’s sites, which grab up places one and two consistently.

One note about these ComScore statistics, just in case you’re wondering about that last one: it ‘groups’ sites together rather than counting individual URLS, so for instance, the Microsoft sites take the number two spot en masse. In terms of U.S. traffic, Facebook still trails Yahoo! a bit, with 152 million visitors and 181 million hits. Well, I believe Facebook will eventually overtake Yahoo! very soon, by looking at how the site grows so tremendously these few months.

Apple bringing Cherokee language support to iPhone and iPad

Apple bringing Cherokee language support to iPhone and iPad

Cherokee, one of the native languages for American Indian, is getting included in Apple’s iOS devices. Now why is Apple including such a rare language that only a mere 8,000 or so individuals still speak Cherokee, and most of them are aged 50 and above. Well apparently Cherokee Chief Chad Smith actually visited Apple and used students currently being schooled in immersion programs to persuade Apple.

The tribe has been working with Apple to develop Cherokee language software for the iPhone, iPod and iPad. But this is not something that just happened a few months ago. This momentous occasion actually took place “years” ago and the Cherokee Nation has been working hard to have their language in iOS devices for years.

The iPhone and iPod will have them now, but the work on iPad has yet to be completed due to the product being introduced only this year. The language will purportedly become available for the iPad at a later date. Next up, the Elven language from Middle Earth!

Japan’s Softbank slap an NFC onto iPhone 4

Japan’s Softbank slap an NFC onto iPhone 4

Will 2011 be the year of the NFC? We don’t know yet, because the year has even yet to start, but it seemed very likely. Google started it with the NFC in Nexus S, now Japanese carrier Softbank has added a new “seal” at the back of Apple’s iPhone 4. It sticks on, covering almost the entire rear, but is apparently thin enough not to get in the way of using one of Apple’s own Bumpers alongside it. But the NFC card doesn’t communicate with the iPhone as it’s just a dumb NFC card. This is actually a response to complaints about the iPhone 4′s NFC deficit — the FeliCa payment system is pretty popular over in Japan. The NFC add-on will be on sale in February at a price of ¥2,980 ($36), but you still can’t train concussive shells on it.

Samsung to show off 4-inch Galaxy Player at CES?

The Galaxy S is there to have a fight with Apple’s iPhone though barely, and Samsung has their Galaxy Tab to take on Apple’s iPad, though the size is quite mismatched. Now the Korean electronics giant Samsung is ready to whip up an iPod Touch killer called the Galaxy Player (unconfirmed yet). The Android 2.2 PMP will be demoed at CES early next month, and features a 4-inch Super Clear LCD display with 800 x 480 resolution, Android 2.2 as the operating system (replete with Samsung’s own TouchWiz layer), a 1GHz CPU, 3.2 megapixel imager on the back plus a front-facing camera, and a 1200mAh battery. Android Market access is also in the cards.
