Samsung shows flexible and transparent displays at CES 2011

Transparent displays, we’ve seen them. Flexible displays, we’ve seen them. Now lo and behold, both these awkward species have been shown together by Samsung at CES. The only sad thing is they still can’t fuse both these alien displays together.

Let’s start with the flexible unit. The Korean seems to be particularly sensitive about shattered panels by demonstrating on video that its latest wobbly panel is shatter-proof by bashing it repeatedly with a sledgehammer — compare that to the inevitably disastrous consequences of dropping an iPhone onto concrete. Though, the company still has some manufacturing challenges to overcome, commercial interest seems to be strong and they’ll eventually be on the market, but not as soon as you may though.

The transparent displays however doesn’t seemed to be that great in both physical perspective and business perspective. They’re not as bright as AMOLED display, as they’re slightly murky. Though, they indeed provide full colour at see-through level in size of around 10 to 15-inch, something of a tiny television size. What’s interesting here is that Samsung says they’re really close to being production-ready with these — possibly even close than the flexible screens — but they’re still looking for business cases that’d make mass-producing them a worthwhile venture.
