Volkswagen XL1 concept screams 313MPG fuel efficiency

The Germans sure have big dreams, but this dream won’t hurt at all if they manage to crank it up into real product cars. Volkswagen has unveiled its latest Super Efficient Vehicle concept called the XL1. The front might retain the corporate grille and face, but the back does look like another car that I’ve seen before. The back does remind me of some old school cars which have their rear wheels covered up. The Dutch company rated it at 313MPG and produces only 24g of CO2 per kilometre travelled.
Of course, there’s an electric motor in the drivetrain, but the engine is also a very efficient TDI diesel engine, which should be a new one since they’re trying to kill off the twin-charged TSI engine and come out with a new one too.

The company says that the overall body design is focused on making the car as light and as aerodynamic as possible, which is why the design looks so awkward. Volkswagen has achieved a 795kg curb weight by using carbon fiber, magnesium, ceramics, and aluminium to shave down any excess portliness from the XL1, while wind-tunnel testing and optimizations have resulted in a rather exemplary 0.186 drag coefficient. So this design isn’t some random shot at all.
Still, it’s a concept, so no worry there on this being the next Sirocco.
