Steve Jobs takes medical leave from Apple

January 18th, 2011

Steve Jobs takes medical leave from AppledSteve Jobs, the dude that revolutionize MP3 players, smartphones, and the latest tablet, is sick. Well, he’s been sick all these while, as the body is catching up rapidly with his age. Apple’s CEO is taking a medical leave from work, which seemed to be his second time in as many years, and he will have Tim Cook filling his evil role during that time.

In an email to the Apple team, Steve Jobs says he’ll be on leave to “focus on [his] health,” though he will retain the position of CEO and remain involved in the major strategic decisions. Tim Cook will be looking over the day-to-day operations. No further details have been provided, save for Steve expressing his love for Apple and wish to return to his duties as soon as he can. Well, we wish him speedy recovery.

Android getting Google Music sync in Gingerbread 2.4?

Android getting Google Music sync in Gingerbread 2.4?

We have iOS getting sync to iTunes and AirPlay. Clearly Google feels left out, so here we are, getting rumours of Google Music sync in the upcoming Android 2.4 update. GizmoFusion claims that this screen shot comes from a device running Gingerbread, clearly showing “Music” as one of the accounts configured in Android’s settings, which suggests that the system will be pretty deeply-integrated to sync your tracks just as it would your Twitter updates, your Facebook friends, or your calendar entries. Obviously how valid this claim is, we can’t tell. However, seeing that we’ve heard from quite a number of reports talking about upcoming Android 2.4, there’s nothing to be shame about dreaming this wonderful feature for Android fans.

Google explains why H.264 axed from Chrome, says WebM plug-ins coming to Safari and IE9

Google explains why H.264 axed from Chrome, says WebM plug-ins coming to Safari and IE9

Last week Google killed H.264 from within its Chrome browser by ending support of said video content playback from Chrome’s HTML5 video tag. Well, they’re back again in the news, defending their radical move. Google stated that “H.264 licenses cost money; Firefox and Opera don’t support H.264 either; and big companies like Google are helping the little guy by championing this open alternative.”

It seemed that Google is ever so eager to push their WebM format to higher heights, as not only is hardware decoder IP now available for the VP8 codec, but the project team is presently readying WebM plug-ins for Safari and Internet Explorer 9, neither of which include it themselves. Good move? We shall see, when WebM gets big enough.

Crytek seeking iOS developers, CryEngine for iOS?

Crytek seeking iOS developers, CryEngine for iOS?

Now, what the hell is this? Crytek wants iOS developers in its building? Crytek has this week advertised its intention to leap into the Apple orchard known as iOS via a job posting. Sadly, there’s no direct mention of a mobile version of Crysis, though given the limited range of Crytek’s activities, the company is clearly looking to develop either an iOS game or a game companion app. Aside from the job requirements, the “preferences” section is also illuminating as it lists Android and Windows Mobile development expertise — potentially suggesting that whatever developer leads the iOS charge might then transition to bringing Crytek’s goods to the other major mobile platforms. This is indeed awesome news to gamers with a smartphone.

Previously we’ve seen Epic Game getting Infinite Blade into iPhones, and now it seemed that Crytek is very interested in getting into this foggy territory. We’ve seen many iOS games, but they all look like kid’s game. It’s good news that developers are considering iOS a serious platform for games with great graphics.

Can I have this as my iPhone’s lock screen? Pretty please!

Can I have this as my iPhone’s lock screen? Pretty please!

Remember the Qlocktwo clock? One of the coolest-looking complex clock there is. These days people find it fancy to look at a clock that gives you some words to describe a time. It’s a clock that tells you the time in plain English (or Spanish, or Swedish, or French, or whatever). Needles and digits, they’re overrated. Previously you need to buy the real Qlocktwo, but now you can have it in your iPhone. The only down side is that you can’t set apps like this as the lock screen of your iPhone.

BlackBerry Storm 3 showing up again for a Sept 2011 launch?

RIM has been surprisingly active in teasing us with upcoming BlackBerry phones, whether they’re coming or not is another story though. Here we have yet again a Storm 3 leak from BGR, saying that we can expect a phone with a 1.2GHz processor (same as the alleged Torch 2) along with a 3.7-inch WVGA display, 5 megapixel camera, dual-band WiFi with UMA support, mobile hotspot capability, and BlackBerry OS 6.1. Word has it there will be at least two versions released around the globe — codenamed Monaca and Monza — and it’s on track for a September release. Well, at least they say it’s on track. But now is still January, so that’s eight months to go. By then, we might have quad-core phones? I mean, who knows?

Sony NEX-5 now in glorious gold!

Sony NEX-5 now in glorious gold!

Thank lord, Sony has finally added some spice, well, not really very spicy, but still a big welcome to the drabness of silver and black NEX-5 cameras in the shelf. Sony has announced that it’ll now offer its NEX-5 camera in gold. The camera remains otherwise unchanged since its debut this past summer, and unfortunately the company hasn’t released the other colors seen at Photokina, but hey, a little bling is better than none. Now I foresee the ladies getting this and bling it up with countless of… blings. Well, if you don’t really like gold or black or silver, you can always apply the DIY method from DigitalREV and spray ‘em all pink!
