WebOS is coming to PCs later this year

After throwing out everything they wanted to say about webOS, HP ended their webOS event with a huge bombshell, and that the webOS is coming to PC, a similar approach from Apple that integrates iOS designs and UI into the Mac machines. The company says it’s thinking beyond today and intends to take webOS to “other connected devices, including printers, and some form factors you haven’t seen before.” Big ambitions here from HP but nevertheless it’s a very welcome approach. We’ll see how HP handles this and Windows 8. But so many OS in the market how will software get compatibility?

HP TouchPad will have Kindle app and Skype at launch

HP TouchPad will have Kindle app and Skype at launch

HP didn’t really demonstrate much of their webOS tablet, the TouchPad, at the webOS event. However, they did mention a few important keys of the tablet, and part of it is collaboration with Amazon to develop a new tablet-friendly Kindle app for webOS, which will obviously let you “buy once, read everywhere” like how Amazon says. This will be the same approach with RIM’s PlayBook it seemed. Great news for Kindle owners, and especially that the app will be free.

What’s more, HP also confirmed that it’s working with Skype on video calling, which will presumably be included with the tablet at launch. Now that’s great news.

Android 2.3.3 announced with more developer-friendly access to NFC

Android 2.3.3 announced with more developer-friendly access to NFC

We’re getting very puzzled with Google’s Android version lately. People have found that Honeycomb might work with smartphones, and Android 2.4 with the same Gingerbread codename is coming as early as April, but now Google is still announcing the new 2.3.3 build, an extension to the still-new Gingerbread 2.3 build. So what’s so special about this build that needs Google to announce?

Apparently 2.3.3 brings developer access to the platforms newfound NFC capabilities as first seen on the Nexus S. Yes, this has been seen as coming soon but I’d never expect it to be this fast. When Google announced the Nexus S with NFC and Gingerbread 2.3, we saw the introduction of the NFC on smartphone in a big way, but there’s no way for you to alter the NFC chip command, as well as to program the Google Place NFC. Now you can.

Well, there’s a new NFC read / write API that Google alleges will let you access pretty much any NFC tag on the market today, better control over what happens when a tag comes within range of the device, and “limited support” for peer-to-peer NFC communication — something Stanford cobbled together for the Nexus S not long ago. The new build is available now to developers using the Android SDK; no devices have received an update yet, but we’d imagine the Nexus S is queued up to get it before too long.

Broadcom outs new dual-core processor for Android

If you’ve not notice, Broadcom is giving Google a lot of love of late, with the announcement of its second Android-ready processor in as many months hitting us today.

The new BCM28150 is a big step up from its predecessor (released in December), and sports a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 clocked at 1.1GHz. The chip is actually quite impressive: an HSPA+ modem doing 21Mbps; and Broadcom’s VideoCore IV VPU (vector processing unit).

What’s more, it touts 12-megapixel camera imaging, 3D video and gaming at 1080p, HDMI out, and the obligatory Bluetooth, WiFi, and GPS amenities. If the BCM28150 is your bag, Broadcom plans to demo the thing in Barcelona next week. Let’s see how this fares with Nvidia’s love for Google, the Tegra 2 that’s been heavily featured in many of Android products.

Guitar Hero is dead

Yes, you heard it right. No thanks to “continued declines in the music genre,” Activision yesterday announced alongside its financial report to investors, that it plans to not only “discontinue development on its Guitar Hero game for 2011″ (killing the franchise, in short) but also to “disband Activision Publishing’s Guitar Hero business unit.” Yes, the whole ‘Hero’ department is getting fired.
