Apple postpones iPad 2 launch in Japan

Japan is still in an alarming state after its Sendai coast had been hit by a tsunami caused by an 8.9 magnitude earthquake last Friday, the same day Apple launch its iPad 2 in US (not saying anything, really). Japan is still struggling to contain radiation leak from its nuclear power plant in Fukushima.

Apple’s latest tablet, the iPad 2 is supposed to have an international launch on March 25 that includes Japan, but Apple has released a statement saying that as a result of the devastating crisis, Japan will no longer partake in the March 25 launch.

“We are delaying the launch of the iPad 2 in Japan while the country and our teams focus on recovering from the recent disaster,” Apple spokesperson Natalie Kerris said in an email to Macworld.

“Our hearts go out to the people of Japan, including our employees and their families, who have been impacted by this terrible tragedy.”

Apple has been facilitating Red Cross donations via iTunes. Users can donate $5, $10, $25, $50, $100 or $200. Apple has said it will not be passing on donor information and 100% of donations will be forwarded to the Red Cross.
