Apple iOS 4.3 coming March 11 with iPad 2

iOS 4.3 beta has been out for some time, but it didn’t really get released. Now we know why. It’s tagging along with the iPad 2, which means a March 11 launch. iOS 4.3 will feature the Nitro JavaScript engine from Safari on OS X, as well as new iTunes Home Sharing features that let you play content from desktop iTunes over WiFi. There’s also the updated AirPlay with new features from the beta, like ability for App Store apps to share audio and video.

Apple iPad Smart Cover

Apple iPad Smart Cover

Apple pulled a surprise stun (a mini one actually) during their iPad event by announcing a new Smart Covers for their new iPad. It’s not a case because it only protects the front screen of the new iPad, not the back or even the side. Here’s what Steve Jobs said: “We designed the case right alongside the product. It’s not a case — it’s a cover.” Yes, quite literally. A piece of expensive cloth (or leather), though a smart one with some sort of magnetic voodoo magic that starts up the iPad whenever you flip it (I mean the iPad). Read more…

Motorola prices WiFi-only Xoom at £450 in UK

Motorola prices WiFi-only Xoom at £450 in the UK

The price of Motorola’s 10.1-inch Tegra 2 powered Xoom tablet has been facing some criticism all this while, but finally the price speculation has tamed down with a better (and official) pricing of the Honeycomb tablet in UK. UK electronics retailer PC World has just put up its Xoom pre-order page with a reasonable £450 ($730). That’s of course the non-3G model, as the 3G model would probably only be available from carriers. In contrast, the 32GB WiFi-only Xoom tablet (the only model) is £60 cheaper than the 32GB WiFi-only iPad, which is its direct competitor. That’s about only £10 more than the 16GB iPad too. Fair enough.

In regards to the 3G version, T-Mobile Germany has also revealed its Xoom pricing, which is €699.95 ($965). That’s just about 95 cents different (in Euro) than the 32GB iPad 3G, which means your preference will probably be straight forward, with no pricing issues affected. Apparently distribution will begin in April, at least for the UK region.

Amazon Appstore for Android launching this month?

Amazon Appstore for Android launching this month?

Great news for Android app developers. We’ve known that Amazon is developing their own ‘Amazon app store for Android devices’, but now we have slightly better picture of when it’s coming. The seemingly in-the-know ad network Millennial Media had tweeted earlier today that the Amazon Appstore for Android is “launching this month,” and linked to a blog post that details what’s in store for developers. Sadly though, the site doesn’t seem to provide sufficient details other than saying ‘it’s coming this month’. Hopefully this will indeed be coming this month, as the ‘Appstore’ will provide additional exposure for Android apps in Amazon.com.

NVIDIA Tegra Zone officially launched

NVIDIA Tegra Zone officially launched

Nvidia Tegra 2 developers have mentioned that Nvidia would be launching a ‘Tegra Zone’ thing for all Tegra-powered smartphones and tablets, and now it’s here officially.

If you didn’t know, the Tegra Zone is an Android application that highlights content that would ‘shine’ from having the dual-core awesomeness of that Tegra 2 in your smartphone/tablet. At launch, there’s a hand-picked selection of games whose makers have gone the extra mile and thrown in additional geometric detail, heavier computation loads, and higher-resolution textures specifically for Tegra 2 smartphones and tablets.

The snazzier, more interactive games will still be sourced from the Android Market, the Tegra Zone is no more than a portal unto the vast world of Android content, but it’s hoped that its presence will help convey the full value of owning a dual-core mobile device.
