Qualcomm shows off 1.5GHz dual-core MSM8660, prototype smashed benchmark

These days even smartphone’s processor plays an important part in pushing the phone to the market, as I’ve said as usual that smartphones are becoming more and more like full-fledge computers. Apple’s A5 processor has been quite astonishing, but Qualcomm isn’t going to just bow down to Apple. What they did is take the 1GHz Scorpion core residing in Qualcomm’s current flagship Snapdragon, the MSM8x55, duplicate it, overclock the resulting pair by 50 percent, and give them improved graphics in the form of Adreno 220. And the result is staggering!

Qualcomm proceed to develop a prototype smartphone just to show the processing capability of their new processor, and thus far review from Anandtech shows that it’s very impressive. The taxing OpenGL ES 2.0 test you see below shows the new Snapdragon doubling the frame rates churned out by Motorola’s mighty Atrix 4G (which admittedly has to work harder thanks to its higher-res display) and completely embarrassing older generation hardware like the EVO 4G.

And if you’re wonder when we will be seeing this processor running in the wild, like maybe in two or three years’ times, then you’re in a surprise, as the processor is already in HTC’s upcoming EVO 3D and Pyramid devices, though running slightly tamer at 1.2GHz.
