Google wants you to donate your old Android phone for charity

Well, not all of you, only those that are attending Google I/O 2011 event. Remember the ‘Chrome for a Cause drive’ last year? Well, Google is going to do a similar stunt again. Google is asking I/O 2011 attendees for their unwanted, unlocked Android smartphones in a campaign dubbed “Android for Good.” Donated devices collected at the event will be put to use at charities in developing nations — for instance, your old phone could save elephants from poachers, or help remote villages get healthcare, or so they say. Well, at least now you’ve got a good reason to donate off that old HTC Hero and get that new Desire S. I’m sure the goodies that you get in the event is already gooding enough.

Razer Hydra motion controller gets summer release, Portal 2 bundle

It’s been quite a while since the last we heard about Razer Hydra controller, and now these motion sensing sticks will finally be available for pre-order in May and will go on sale in June, two months after this weeks’ release of Portal 2. Yes, this controller will indeed bundle along with the new fancy game Portal 2, but we’re pretty sure the price that you’re paying includes the cost of the game itself. Razer will charge you a hefty $140 for the controller with the bundled game, which is a big gap different from the previously promised “below $100” price.

Two months is a pretty long time to wait to play the already-available title, and Razer isn’t offering any info on a standalone version of the Sixense-based magnetic peripheral. On the upside, though, Joystiq got its hands on a list of compatible titles, which includes 122 games on top of the aforementioned sequel.

Sony Ericsson X8 slapped with a Walkman logo, now called W8

Take the tiny little Xperia X8 with Éclair; add some new funky colors, the traditional Walkman logo that embraced a fleet of Sony Ericsson with music-focused features, and well you’re now looking at the very first Walkman phone running Android. Ladies and gentlemen, meet the W8. As expected, the W8 will have a low-end spec similar to the one that it wants to imitate. A 3-inch, 320 x 480 touchscreen, a 600MHz processor, 168MB of RAM and Android 2.1. It’s not listed in the US site, yet, but it’s already up in the Germany’s page.

Apple to announce new cloud-based music service soon?

This rumour has been talked about for quite some time now and has yet to see the light of day. Now Reuters is now reporting that Apple is finally set to launch a cloud-based music service — presumably putting its massive North Carolina data centre to some real work at long last.
Details are still fairly light beyond that, but Reuters says that Apple’s service will actually launch ahead of Google’s similar cloud-based option, which it reports is now “stalled,” citing “several people familiar with both companies’ plans.” According to Reuters, the service will let folks store their music (and only music, apparently) on Apple’s servers and then access it on any device with an internet connection — and a copy of iTunes, we presume. Shouldn’t be hard, since iTunes is now the leading music store on the net, and should be the biggest.

Peter Kafka of All Things Digital is agreeing with Reuters, and said that Apple is actively seeking to license the music for its streaming service before launching. According to Kafka’s sources, Apple has already secured deals with two of the big four labels and plans to launch “pretty soon.” The deal would allow Apple to store a single master copy of a track on its servers and then share that track with multiple users, probably through a digital certification to reduce duplicated copies.

Edox X-Treme Pilot III specially designed for drivers that like to swing in dirts

Racing is all about time. Beating others to the checkered flag indirectly mean that you are racing with the ticking clock. It’s all about racing the clock. So it follows naturally that rally drivers need the right tool for the job, and this is it: the Edox X-Treme Pilot III.

Crafted by the official timekeeper of the World Rally Championship specifically for WRC drivers, the X-Treme Pilot III features such unique touches as oversize push-buttons that are easy to actuate even with gloves on and a tachometer scale around the dial. It’s housed in a lightweight titanium case with a wheel motif embossed on the case-back, and affixed to the paddock’s most talented wrists by a rubber strap with rally-spec tire tread pattern.

The Edox X-Treme Pilot III will go on sale in June with an €1,890 (~$2,750) MSRP in a limited edition of 1000 examples.

Marvel recreates Volkswagen’s mini-Vader commercial, with a mini-Thor

Marvel recreates Volkswagen’s mini-Vader commercial, with a mini-Thor

Volkswagen made a very cute commercial of a little punk Vader during the Super Bowl XLV, and it seemed that Marvel Comics is ripping off the same theme. But to what? Well, the highly anticipated upcoming Thor movie of course. The studio has gone through the trouble of recreating the German automaker’s “The Force” ad nearly scene-for-scene… with one notable exception.

Honda’s luxurious brand in the North America, Acura is the official car sponsor for this movie, but the hero car in this particular commercial isn’t the new Acura TL in the movie Thor. That’s probably all for the best given the final outcome.

While Volkswagen’s tiny Vader couldn’t quite bend the force to his will, this runt manages to have a little better luck with Thor’s hammer. Can’t really tell you how it ended, but let’s just say that this little brat is in a big trouble. You’ll just have to check out the full spot in the video after the jump.

P/S: There’s quite a few ‘Easter Bunny’ in this commercial too, in line with Easter day. Look at the dog’s name, the toys behind the Barbie Doll, the mug used by mum, and the keychain in the car.
