Acer changes company logo, hopes you’ll notice

Previously we’ve heard about Acer crying like a little baby after comparing themselves to the likes of HP and Apple. Having saying sayonara to their former CEO Gianfranco Lanci, the Taiwanese company is now slapping a fresh coat of paint and a softer typeface upon its corporate identity, silently hoping that it’ll transform the company into a luxurious brand. The new Acer green is lighter and brighter and the more rounded new shape looks dull to me. Well, good luck Acer. You’ll need that.

Ad-supported Kindle goes live in May 3rd

Ad-supported Kindle goes live in May 3rd

Here’s something quite revolutionary in electronics products, especially those that are in the slightly cheaper category. Amazon has officially announced a new version of Kindle. This new Kindle will have ad-support, which means you’ll be asked to endure “advertisements on the bottom of the device’s home page and on its screen savers.”

But for what? Well, this will save about $25 on the Kindle’s price! This will set a new pace for ad-discounted tablets, netbooks, PMPs, and who knows what else. Get ready for a new type of invasion guys.

At this point, Buick, Olay and Visa will be advertising, and we get the impression that said list will bloom in due time. It’s hard to say just how intrusive they’ll be, but Kindle director Jay Marine seems to think that “customers are going to love it.”

At any rate, a demo of the new device displayed a screen saver deal “where customers would pay $10 for a $20 gift card to Amazon,” and while no ads will appear in e-books, there’s still “a clear advertisement” along the bottom of the home screen.

So, will you take these cheaper Kindles? For me, I’d rather head over to the ‘Garage Sales’ and sniff around.

Skype mobile video call appears only Verizon’s HTC Thunderbolt exclusively

FaceTime, what’s that? Only works on WiFi? Ha, that’s week, Mr Jobs. Coz Android’s getting it on you sir. That’s because Verizon’s new LTE phone, the flagship HTC Thunderbolt is going to ship with the new Skype. Yes, now you can easily make video calls with Skype on your HTC Thunderbolt. Right now it’s still exclusive to this particular LTE Android phone and according to Engadget, streaming these video calls through LTE feels butter smooth like on WiFi. The app seems to work on 3G too, but the reduced video quality is said to be very awful.

Saudi Arabia does the unthinkable, plans to build a mile-tall skyscraper

Saudi Arabia does the unthinkable, plans to build a mile-tall skyscraper

Proud of your Petronas Twin Tower? Think the Burj Khalifa is very tall and crazy? Nope, these are nothing. Prince Al Waleed Bin Talal, head of Kingdom Holding Company recently gave his approval for construction of what will be billed as the world’s tallest man-made structure — the Kingdom Tower. Yes, bizarre!

Designed by Adrian Smith, the Kingdom Tower will be built in Saudi Arabia’s city of Jeddah. The tower will stretch one mile up into heavens and include 12 million cubic feet of space, several stories of office space, several stories for a hotel and four tiers of residential space, with the upper most tier reserved for “alternative energy generation” solutions (perhaps including a pendulum to keep the entire tower from collapsing).

Right, there’s a lift in this building, which will take about 12-minutes to reach the top from the bottom. Now, can you hold your fart that long? Because I don’t think I can. What’s more, what if you’ve reached the bottom of the building ready to go home just to realize you left your phone up there. That’s about 24-minutes wasted, not including finding your phone. Now, what if you need to crap?

Bluetrek introduces world’s first carbon fiber Bluetooth headset

Bluetrek introduces world's first carbon fiber Bluetooth headset

Looks like we’re in for some carbon fiber treat starting now. We always see electronic gadgets having plastic housings that look and feel rather cheap, besides Apple Inc.’s famous aluminium chassis designs. But we hardly see carbon fiber being used in this market. Now, we introduce to you the world’s first carbon fiber Bluetooth headset.

Bluetrek’s making the Carbon official today with a $70 price tag and a full set of specs. The thing weighs in at a mere .25 ounces, touts Bluetooth v3.0 support, and allows for four and a half hours of talk time or five days on standby. It also comes with a set of four earbuds in different sizes, so anyone can rock the lightweight headset no matter how big, or small, the ear hole is.

Matrox will have Thunderbolt support on all their products

Matrox will have Thunderbolt support on all their products

Matrox, the company known to let you plug lots of monitors with a single graphics card, announced at NAB 2011, that they will be the first company to market peripherals designed with Thunderbolt in mind. Yes, I can smell some DisplayPort with Thunderbolt combo port products coming this way.

The company mentioned that all the latest models of its MXO2 family of video I/O boxes will be shipping with Thunderbolt on board, while budding film makers using the current gen MXO2 devices will be able to push 10Gb worth of pixels per second by picking up an adapter.

Matrox didn’t announce a firm release date or price, though we expect it will fall in line with the current products, which range from $449 up to almost $2,400 for the MXO2 Rack with Matrox Max. Yes, this is not the type of products for average Joes at the mamak, but if you’re those types of hippies that must have the latest and greatest, I’d just though that you might be interested.
