G.Skill announced new Phoenix EVO series SSD using new 20nm NAND chips

The latest to join G.Skill’s SSD lineup is the new Phoenix Evo, and it’s coming in an odd 115GB capacity. This new 2.5-inch SSD uses the now-dated SandForce SF-1222 controller, but the NAND flash memory chips are using the more advance 20nm process. The SATA interface is still using the 3Gbps interface though, and read write speeds are said to be up to 280MB/s and 270MB/s respectively. Nothing comparable to the latest from Micron and Crucial, but surely will be easy to your wallets, though the exact price hasn’t been announced yet at the moment. The 115GB Phoenix Evo will be shipping in this coming weeks.

Forza Motorsport 4 trailer leaked, coming in October

April 4th, 2011

Gran Turismo has always been the mac-daddy of SIM racing, though there are plenty of others out there, just less popular. Then Shift 2: Unleashed arrives, which decides to contend with GT5 over realistic car racing in game. But now there’s another that wants to take that throne away from them, and it’s none other than Forza Motorsport, and this time it’s the 4th sequel to the popular car racing game.

The newest installment of Forza leverages Kinect technology, allowing players to open the doors and hoods of their cars with hand motions and fire the engine from the driver’s seat. During a race, Kinect also lets players look around corners by detecting head movement.

Turn 10 says its goal is to produce the best-looking racing sim of 2011, employing methods like image-based lighting to get as much photorealistic quality as they can out of each car and track. Turn 10 also says that Forza 4 will have the most extensive range of models to choose from, with cars from over 80 manufacturers. The company is planning on shipping Forza 4 into your XBOX 360 in October. In the meantime, check out the “leaked” trailer after the jump.

HTC confirms Flyer tablet will get Honeycomb, eventually

HTC confirms Flyer tablet will get Honeycomb, eventually

When HTC announced their new 7-inch Android Flyer, everyone though that it’s going to be a typical dual-core Gingerbread tablet, but it pretty much surprised everyone. There’s no dual-core, and there’s no Gingerbread. The company mentioned at Mobile World Congress that they chose not to use the OS for the tablet because it didn’t have enough time to customize it with its Sense UI.

It’s now finally chimed in on the matter again, however, and replied to a question on Twitter by saying that it “will be offering a Honeycomb upgrade when it’s made available.” Of course, they failed to mention their time date, so I guess they still have another excuse to downstage when they fail to deliver. Work hard please HTC!

Amazon said to be considering NFC-based mobile payment service

Amazon said to be considering NFC-based mobile payment service

Besides shopping at Amazon.com, you can actually use Amazon Payments service to shop at other places. Now Amazon reported to be considering about expanding things to actually stores with brick and mortar as well.

Bloomberg is reporting that Amazon is exploring a mobile payment service based on NFC technology, which would let you pay for items and receive things like loyalty points using nothing other than an NFC-equipped cellphone. Not surprisingly, Amazon is also said to be considering some other features that would send folks back to Amazon.com. Can’t brain this? Well, Bloomberg gives the example of someone shopping for jeans in a retail store and can’t find the right size, and says that they could simply scan the jean’s tag to order a pair online. Smart move ey?

Of course, all these are still ideas on the drawing board, and Amazon is said to decide whether to go forward with it or not “in the next three to five months.”

Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome 802.16m, the next generation WiMAX standard

Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome 802.16m, the next generation WiMAX standard

The term has been out for quite some time now (four years to be exact), but nobody actually paid any attention to it, until the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) gives its oh-so-coveted stamp of approval to 802.16m just recently. Yes, it’s now a go!

If you didn’t know, 802.16m is the standard for next generation WiMAX, which means your next WiMAX phone may be able to handle downstream rates of over 300Mbps. 300Mbps may be norm for your brand new 802.11n wireless router, but your WiFi network has a limited range. But soon your phone will be able to handle the same speed of your new WiFi-N speed at a cellular coverage!

Of course, the future of WiMAX is very scarce at the moment, as a tremendous amount of carriers have opted for the LTE boat instead of WiMAX, and I doubt the public will actually be interested in 300Mbps WiMAX 2.0 when Advance-LTE comes out, which is expected to have a downstream rate of about 600Mbps.

London never sleeps?

April 2nd, 2011

Here’s an animation of the Twitter traffic in London for 24 hours. Tweets are shown as red circles, and re-tweets as yellow points moving in the direction of information, i.e. from the original tweets towards the location of the re-tweets. Apparently, the parallel Twitter universe wakes up much later than the real world of commuters. Also, the traffic is real.

MSI 13-inch X370 gets Fusion-ed thanks to AMD

MSI 13-inch X370 gets Fusion-ed thanks to AMD

For those nerds that care about Crysis 2, this laptop’s definitely not for you. For those mobile warriors that constantly travel around and needs an overall solid notebook, then do read on. Apple’s 13-inch MacBook Air might only have Core 2 Duo, and Samsung’s 9-Series 13-inch ultra-portable might have the latest Sandy Bridge version Core i7, but MSI is taking quite a different route this time.

Their 13.4-inch ultraportable is getting some new muscles from AMD instead; as their 1366 x 768 resolution display will be brighten up by AMD’s hot-off-of-the-presses Zacate E-350 APU with the help of Radeon HD 6310 graphics. Connectivity wise, there’s HDMI / VGA outputs, a pair of USB 2.0 ports, an internal card reader, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, gigabit Ethernet, a 1.3 megapixel camera and (nearly) as much DDR3 memory as you can stuff into it. You’ll also get a 320/500/640GB hard drive, a 4- or 8-cell battery and a chassis that weighs 3.08 pounds with the smaller of the two cells.

Operating system though is the usual suspect of Windows 7 (64-bit), but the company’s stopping short of providing a hard price or release date.
