Bookeen does real time web browsing and scrolling on standard E Ink screen

Bookeen does real time web browsing and scrolling on standard E Ink screen

Is E Ink going to be the future of our devices? Well, they do look promising. Bookeen’s latest breakthrough is showing off web browsing and scrolling on the same screen. It’s a little stuttery, as you can see in the video below, but considering this is the same tech found in the Kindle it’s quite impressive. The trick is accomplished using custom software and off the shelf hardware – which means nothing fancy and futuristic. Hopefully we will be able to see this being implemented in future products. Amazon Kindle Tablet with new advance E Ink? That sounds promising!

HP Pavilion g6s laptop now powered by Intel’s Sandy Bridge too

HP Pavilion g6s laptop now powered by Intel’s Sandy Bridge too

HP has been busy refreshing almost all their products powered by Intel to run on Sandy Bridge this whole month, and it looks like things are almost complete right now. The last on the lot, the budget segment Pavilion g6s is also getting onboard the Sandy Bridge rolling stone.

This one is also packing a 15.6-inch display like the g6t and g6x, with a rather disappointing 1,366 x 768 resolution. Not sure why they opt for such a low res despite being a budget laptop, that seemed so out of place compared to the rest of the specs that got upgraded.

But of course, you can now get that paired with your choice of Core i3, i5 or i7 Sandy Bridge processors. Otherwise, you’ll get some fairly respectable specs across the board, including up 6GB of RAM, up to a 750GB hard drive, and optional Radeon HD 6470M graphics — not to mention your choice of four different color options.

Of course, cost is still the main concern with the g6 series, and this one keeps things in check with a starting price of $550.

Toshiba Thrive tablet up for pre-order starting at $449, coming soon…

Toshiba is said to be launching a Honeycomb tablet around the corner, and we’ve been playing the name guessing game all these while. But finally, a proper answer is here. After being teased by Toshiba since January at CES, when the company filed a trademark for “Thrive” shortly before the tablet surfaced with the unfortunate ANT moniker, finally a proper title has surfaced.

J&R has listed the new device on their site. The retailer has 8GB and 32GB versions of the tablet up for pre-order at $449 and $579, respectively. Specs also include a 10.1-inch screen, an NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, 1GB of RAM, WiFi connectivity, and 2MP / 5MP front and rear cameras. The tablet is listed as “coming soon” on the site, so there’s still no proper launch date to refer to. But at least we’ve got the name and price correct, hopefully.

Lady gaga jump with you for Google’s Chrome

The most famous name of modern music these days, the name that we come to know and love (or hate), and the one whose songs rose to number one almost instantly at iTunes once released. Yes, I’m talking about Lady Gaga. Now the queen of modern music has finally picked a side in the browser battles, as she’s featured in the latest Google Chrome commercial.

Spanning a minute and a half of Gaga and her fans singing and gyrating their way through her latest single, the ad is intended to illustrate the power of the web and its creative new modes of interaction.

PSN attack cost Sony lots of money

PSN attack cost Sony lots of money

We all know about the breach of Sony’s PSN and Qriocity services earlier on, but do you know how much that attack cost Sony? Taking down the system means no sales, hiring security firms mean extra cost burnt, and how about the stocks of Sony Corp? The news isn’t going to be good for shareholders of Sony.

Finally putting some kind of official estimate on the damage caused by last month’s attack on the PlayStation Network, Sony has pegged the total cost to be around USD$170 million.

“Based on information currently available to Sony, our currently known costs associated with the unauthorized network access are estimated to be approximately 14 billion yen in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2012,” Sony said today in an official earnings forecast statement.

As it stands at time of posting, that’s exactly USD$171,203,043 estimated damage. There’s no detailed breakdown of just how those costs are spread out – how much is down to estimates on the loss of business, direct costs of fixing stuff, etc – but hey, it all contributes to the same bottom line. And that’s one painful bottom line.

Modern Warfare 3 trailer released with in-game footage, epic and explosive, but not too pretty

May 24th, 2011

The upcoming Modern Warfare 3 is going to be big, as wars are going on around multiple places around the globe: America, England, Germany, and France. The story resumes where Modern Warfare 2 ended, and presumably with the Soviet invading the cities of US, and other main cities around the world. See for yourself all the explosive battles in the trailer above.

Infinity Ward says that Modern Warfare 3 “has moved beyond its Modern Warfare 2 tech”, but will this be enough to change the Quake 3-like gameplay? While those digs against Infinity Ward may have been unfair and inaccurate—its in-house IW Engine has been regularly updated and refined over the years—the next Call of Duty game appears to leave its id Tech 3 legacy behind.

“We haven’t gone into detail on the engine yet but we’ve moved beyond the [Modern Warfare 2] engine and added a lot of cool stuff for [Modern Warfare 3],” writes Infinity Ward creative strategist Robert Bowling on Twitter.

From what I see, there aren’t many changes from the previous engine, with some add-ons and stuff, but nothing too fancy. Hopefully the gameplay is more than just some 7-hours of spicy stories.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is coming November 8, 2011.

Young teenager carves awesome wooden car sculptures like diecast

Young teenager carves awesome wooden car sculptures like diecast

I’m never the artistic guy, though I have to say that I do know how to draw, at least some very cool stickman style. But what we have here is more than just splatting oil paints on some thick papers. Here’s a young lad that sculpt a piece of wood block into a car model.

Top Gear Philippines magazine is featuring a story on Franco Cagayat, an artistic 21-year-old sculptor who specializes in carving detailed vehicle models from a single block of wood. The thing is complete with doors that open and close, full interiors and complete engine bays, something that we’ve never seen before. This is more authentic than your die cast. Cagayat says he got started by drawing every vehicle he saw and eventually learned to translate that talent into sculpting.

The artist first became a fan of Top Gear when a classmate offered to trade him a copy of the magazine for a wooden Ferrari Testarossa. Doesn’t sound like a very fair trade to me, but well at least now we have some common interest. He now uses the photos in the publication for reference when it comes time to carve the newest supercars of the world. Hit the jump to take a look at a video interview with Cagayat.

Aston Martin V12 Zagato endurance racer concept

May 24th, 2011

Aston Martin V12 Zagato endurance racer concept

Aston Martin used to work with Zagato to come up with some truly good cars, but those were the old days. But now, both companies have returned to work together again on a new concept super car. This new concept is called the V12 Zagato endurance racer concept, which was unveiled over the weekend at the Villa D’Este Concours in Lake Como, Italy, primarily as a basis to gauge customer interest, with a view towards a strictly limited run of road-going V12 Zagatos to come about.

As the name says, the car is indeed going to be part of the endurance race program, and not a street-legal version, yet. The engine is of course powered by a V12. The new handcrafted aluminium body is shaped in such a manner that’s not possible using pre-formed panel techniques, AM says – utilising the skill of nearly 100 years of heritage in the craft, every aluminium panel on the car has been formed using an English wheel and traditionally-crafted body bucks. Well, the car is still a concept so it’s not a problem anyway.

According to Aston Martin, each front wing comprises seven separate pieces of aluminium, combined and then hand finished to give one flowing form. Another iconic Zagato design cue is the double bubble roof, created in this case from five separate pieces, illustrating further the intensity of craftsmanship involved in the construction of the car. Though, I can’t really deny that the car has the look of a Nissan GTR R35, and also a Ferrari California.

The V12 Zagato is powered by an all-alloy, quad overhead cam 6.0 litre V12 mill producing 510 hp and 570 Nm of torque, mated to a rear mid-mounted, six-speed automated manual gearbox with auto shift manual/select shift manual (ASM/SSM) electric hydraulic control system.

Like the first DB4GT Zagato, which was shown to the public in late 1960 and which spent much of its life as a racing car after being launched, the new car is set to walk the same path – the first two V12 Zagatos to be created are set to serve as endurance race cars for Aston Martin. The car will make its racing debut in the 53. ADAC ACAS H&R-Cup VLN round at Nürburgring next week, with a view to two cars racing in the 24 hour race on June 25-26.
