New Time Capsule opened, no server-grade HDD found

Apple updated their Time Capsule to a bigger size reservoir last week, which now comes with 2TB-3TB. They also listed these as “Serial ATA server-grade hard disk”, standard equipment on the device’s official spec sheet. And well, HardMac opened it up to find something else.

New Time Capsule opened, no server-grade HDD found

It’s generally assumed that for a drive model to be qualified as “enterprise,” it must sustain a mean time between failures — MTBF for short — in excess of one million hours. So what’s the MTBF for the Western Digital’s WD20EARS (Caviar Green) in HardMac’s Time Capsule?

Conveniently, the hard drive maker wouldn’t say. Of course, we guess the definition here is up for interpretation, but given past experiences with the wireless backup gizmo, we’d certainly hope this improved revision fares better.

Cake Boss builds 2,000-pound Bumblebee Camaro cake

Chef Buddy Valastro has stepped up his cake game in a big way. Valastro stars in the TLC series “Cake Boss” and was recently approached to build a confection to celebrate both the Chevrolet Camaro and Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon. He wound up building a 2,000-pound cake sculpture that includes Bumblebee in both Autobot and Camaro forms.

To pull it off, Valastro and his team had to partner up with special-effects gurus to create a special hydraulic system for the piece. As a result, Bumblebee’s wings actuate up and down. The cake also features glowing eyes and fireworks.

The rest of the creation is made from vanilla pound cake and buttercream frosting. Valastro said that the cake was the biggest challenge of his career in more ways than one. The sculpture had to be crafted outside of the chef’s bakery due to its height. Hit the jump to check out a video of his creation and the full press blast.

US FCC found a Nokia N950 with 12-Megapixel camera sensor

US FCC found a Nokia N950 with 12-Megapixel camera sensor

Nokia said that their developer phone the N950 with MeeGo will feature an 8-megapixel shooter, which the Finnish firm touted as “different” than the unit in its older brother. But surprisingly the US FCC managed to get hold of the phone submitted by Nokia for checking and approval, and somehow they spotted a 12-megapixel camera sensor within. Perhaps the “difference” is the extra 4-Megapixel? Is Nokia going for a last minute component change? Well it seemed that Nokia is still going with their old habit of awful phones with huge-ass sensors. Like they said, it’s the ‘Megapixel’ that counts.

Google TV 2.0 Coming to Logitech Revue This Summer

For many, the deal breaker for the Logitech Revue and other Google TV products was two words: IR blaster. Opting to act as a supplement to your current home theatre set-up rather than a replacement for a cable/satellite set-top box, the device was hamstrung by a somewhat complicated set-up process. But this was never about the hardware; the workhorse of this product was the Android-based OS behind it all.

Bringing the web to the TV has been a concept bouncing around the consumer electronics industry for years, and Google’s effort leveraged the Chrome browser to bring any content to your living room. The execution, though solid, failed to meet expectations; primarily because there seemed to be so much left on the table. Like Apple TV, Google TV products had no access to the apps that made their respective OS’s so popular and full featured. Read more…
