Apple product managers respond to Final Cut Pro X criticism, updates on the way

When Apple launched their new Final Cut Pro X last week, Apple boasted about the product’s low price, media management, and ground-up redesign. Unfortunately, when starting from scratch, developers seem to have overlooked a few features that professional users have come to depend on, prompting widespread backlash — both on internet forums and even on Apple’s own App Store, where the $300 download-only app currently has a rating of just 2.5 stars (out of five), including nearly 500 one-star ratings. (Note: you must purchase the app before submitting a rating or review.) The New York Times spoke to product managers about these issues, which include an inability to import old FCP files, no multi-camera editing, no support for RED cameras, and no ability to specify QuickTime export settings, among many others. Apple says there are (pricey) workarounds available, or fixes on the way for all but the first issue, but head over to the source link for the full rundown at NYT.

Skype for iPad leaked in promo video

Dread that your brand new iPad doesn’t have Skype? Or is it the de-facto that stopped you from joining the millions of iPad owners? Well now you can rest easy knowing somewhere out there it does exist — or at least a promo video does. Earlier today, someone over at Skype unintentionally (we assume) posted what looks like an ad for a real-deal app for the iOS slab. Of course, the evidence has since been pulled, but you can check out a ripped version (sans audio) after the break. It looks like the days of blowing up ye ole iPhone Skype are numbered.

The folks over at TUAW had a chat with Skype’s Rick Osterloh about the iPad app, and he says you can expect most of the functionality to carry over from the iPhone. There are, unfortunately, a few desktop features, like file sharing, that won’t make an appearance. Sadly, Osterloh didn’t spill the release-date beans. Read more…

Apple sues Samsung again for copying the iPhone’s design, this time in South Korea

Apple sues Samsung again for copying the iPhone's design, this time in South Korea

As if Apple and Samsung’s patent infringement catfight weren’t distracting enough, Apple is recreating the legal spectacle in Samsung’s home country of South Korea. Apple just filed a suit against Samsung Electronics in Seoul Central District Court, with Cupertino alleging that the Samsung Galaxy S copies the third-generation iPhone, according to a report from the online news site, MoneyToday. That closely matches the claims Apple made when it it sued Samsung back in April for “slavishly” copying the iPhone and iPad. Since then, Apple’s expanded its case to include additional Samsung devices, including the Droid Charge, Infuse 4G, Nexus S 4G, Galaxy Tab 10.1, Galaxy S II, and a handful of others. Meanwhile, Samsung has attempted (in vain) to subpoena prototypes of Apple’s next-gen iPhone and iPad. We wouldn’t be surprised if Samsung abandoned its efforts to peek Apple’s forthcoming products, but if this is, indeed, destined to be a case of déjà vu, Samsung might well strike back with a suit of its own.

Zinio brings Tegra hardware acceleration to Honeycomb tablets

June 25th, 2011

Zinio’s smartphone and tablet apps make it easy to bring a lifetime’s worth of magazine content with you on the go, but performance has been inconsistent, especially when navigating through pages or zooming into photos and text. The company’s latest app improves upon both critical elements, however, taking advantage of the Nvidia Tegra chip in your Mototola Xoom or Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 to smooth out page transitions and pinch-to-zoom. Nvidia posted a side-by-side comparison video demonstrating the improvements on a pair of Xooms, and there’s clearly a noticeable difference. You can try it out for yourself by downloading Zinio version 1.10.3641 from the Android Market, or watch the demo in the video above.

Hacker pleads guilty to US AT&T iPad breach

Hacker pleads guilty to US AT&T iPad breach

Nearly six months after being arrested, one hacker pleaded guilty to charges that he exposed the email addresses of over 100,000 AT&T iPad 3G users. It’s been a year since Daniel Spitler and his compatriot, Andrew Auernheimer, coaxed Ma-Bell servers into delivering the goods, with a brute force script they lovingly named the iPad 3G Account Slurper. The hacker’s plea agreement suggests a 12 to 18-month sentence, which is a lot more lenient than the 10-year maximum he could face. Spitler’s collaborator is apparently still in plea negotiations with the prosecutor. Both men initially claimed they were just trying to draw attention to a security hole, but maybe next time they’ll think twice before embarking on such altruistic endeavors.

iPad accounts for 97 percent of US tablet traffic online, Apple smurfs

It’s no secret that the iPad commands a serious lead in the battle for tablet mindshare, but comScore’s new Device Essentials traffic-tracking service shows just how much that translates into market dominance. Damn Steve Job’s gonna be pleased. According to the web monitoring company, the iPad and its 2011 successor account for 89 percent of tablet internet use globally, and 97 percent in the US. Of course, the slate segment is still young and accounts for only a tiny percentage of total traffic. And, it’s worth noting, the iPad has a significant advantage in being the first to hit shelves.

Lexus LS 600h L Landaulet – one-off wedding limo for a prince and princess’s fairy tale

It’s definitely unique, this one, a Lexus LS 600h L with only half a roof. It’s called the Landaulet, and the one-off vehicle – reworked with a one-piece transparent polycarbonate roof fitment – is set to serve as Prince Albert II of Monaco and Carlene Wittstock’s official royal wedding car on July 2.

The conversion work was carried out by Belgian coachbuilder Carat Duchatelet, working closely with Lexus engineers based in Brussels. The project took more than 2,000 hours to complete, with a focus on maintaining the levels of quality and preserving the performance, safety and dynamic attributes of the original car. Read more…
