Google Estimates Facebook Gets 10^12 PVs
June 28th, 2011
How much is 1 trillion, exactly? Well 1 trillion is a 1 with twelve zeros behind. 1 trillion pennies stacked on top of each other would be about four times the distance between Earth and the Moon. 1 trillion is also the number of page views Facebook users now request every month. If you were to open 1 web page every second, it would take you almost 32,000 years to arrive at 1 trillion pages. The page view number comes courtesy of Google, which estimates Facebook page views via its DoubleClick ad planner tool. Google may be a bit off, as recent rumors put Facebook in the neighborhood of 750 million users, while Google estimates about 880 million and a total of 26 billion user visits every month. Google also states that more than one third of all Facebook users – or more than 300 million – visit the site every day. If the Google data is close to the reality, the Facebook is now logging more than 20,600 user years on its pages. No other website is close to Facebook’s traffic volume, according to Google. Google’s own YouTube is listed as the second largest web property with 800 million users, but only 100 billion page views. Yahoo follows in third place with 660 million users and 77 billion page views. Now you know why that kid is a billionaire and you’re not. June 28th, 2011
Dying to get your hands on HP’s TouchPad and flirt with its WebOS before it’s available on July 1st? According to Pre Central, a visit to either Best Buy or Walmart may give you the opportunity, if you’re lucky that is. During the past few days, the stores have apparently begun quietly displaying demo-loaded versions of the slate. The device went up for pre-order about a week ago, but for WebOS hopefuls still contemplating whether to take the Palm-rooted plunge, a pre-release impression may not be a bad grab between socks and motor oil. Don’t feel like taking a trip to Wally World, you say? You’ll find a video overview past the break. Sony’s ultraslim 13-inch VAIO Z laptop will have external GPU for power on demand users
June 28th, 2011
Sony has finally let their ultraslim VAIO Z laptop into the light, as they’ve unveiled this super slim laptop for the UK market. The specs reveal a 13.1-inch “ultramobile” notebook that comes in at under 1.2kg with a 2.7GHz Intel Core i7 processor, 256GB SSD, 8GB RAM, 1600×900 screen (the press release mentions an optional Full HD display) and sheet battery borrowed from the earlier VAIO S for up to 7 hours of computing. Onboard it features only Intel’s HD Graphics 3000 solution but the VAIO Z beats other ultralights with its Power Media Dock, which contributes the power of an AMD Radeon 6650M GPU with 1GB of dedicated memory connected via Light Peak when more polygons have to be pushed. The dock sports one USB 3.0 hookup plus additional USB, VGA and HDMI ports, and a slot for either a DVD or Blu-ray drive. There’s no word on price yet, but it is promised to ship by the end of July in Europe so if the full specs are appealing then you don’t have much time to save up. Pricing starts at £1,434 ($2,294) with a Core i5 CPU, 4GB of RAM and no PMD. The dock is a £400 ($640) option with no optical drive included, while upgrading to a 1080p 13.1-inch LCD is a mere £40 extra. LulzSec disbanded, releases Battlefield Heroes data as last hurrah
June 28th, 2011
The sextet of hackers known as “Lulz Security” may be done with their 50-day reign of semi-terror, but that doesn’t mean the ramifications of their actions are over. In a final file released, the group released info from approximately 550,000 Battlefield Heroes beta user accounts (according to Rock, Paper, Shotgun) as well as the info from roughly 50,000 “random gaming forum” users. EA tells Eurogamer that the info was from “an early beta version” of the game, and “no emails, account history, credit card numbers or payment methods” were obtained. Apparently the breach took down BF Heroes servers over the weekend, though EA also explained that it has recovered the free-to-play FPS to operational status. And though it’s possible that some of the group’s handiwork has yet to be discovered, we’re hopeful that this is the last story of a breach we’ll be writing after the hacking group’s disbandment. Cross your fingers gamers! Call of Duty: Black Ops Annihilation trailer turns into a pretty Zombieland mission
June 28th, 2011
There are still a few months to go before Modern Warfare 3 arrives, so let’s just stick to Black Ops for now. A new trailer for the third Call of Duty: Black Ops map pack, Annihilation has landed, and this one shows off the new Zombie map, set in jungle paradise Shangri-La. There are a lot of zombies, a surprising amount of monkeys and ridiculous amount of explosive chaos. Sounds like Left 4 Dead? Well not really… The pack, which will cost the same high price as previous Call of Duty maps, will also add four other new multiplayer maps, called Hanger 18, Drive-In, Silo and Hazard. Annihilation comes out on Xbox tomorrow. Activision have said that the PC version will follow ‘shortly afterwards’. Star Wars: The Old Republic trailer takes on a mad king on Alderaan
June 28th, 2011
The latest Star Wars: The Old Republic trailer shows a mission to depose a mad king on Alderaan. There are two major indications that the monarch’s lost his marbles. A member of his own family has enlisted the group’s help to take him off the throne, and he’s wearing a very, very silly hat. To defeat him the four player team must launch a strategically foolish but awesome full frontal assault on his castle. For more footage of the game in-action, check out the Tatooine mission video, and find out more about The Old Republic’s classes in our accounts of 17 hours spent with the Agent and the Bounty Hunter. You’ll find the Alderaan trailer below. HP Envy 14 Beats Edition now comes with Sandy processors, and a premium pricetag
June 28th, 2011
HP’s Envy 14 is quite the looker of a laptop, with its etched aluminum skin beckoning you to explore the capabilities of the Sandy Bridge CPU that lies beneath. For those who prefer the murdered-out look, the HP Envy Beats Edition is the preferable PC, but until now it lacked the upgraded Intel innards of its showy stablemate. That’s right, Amazon’s offering a second-gen Intel Core i5-2410M chip clocked at 2.3 GHz to go with those dark Dr. Dre aesthetics you crave. The inky Envy with the big red “B” is priced at $1,050, some 50 bucks more than its equivalently-equipped cousin – yes, you’ll need to pay for the big red “B” letter, just like that white Apple logo.
