Google kills off ‘Health’ and ‘PowerMeter’ effectively 2012

If you didn’t know, there is a number of blood pressure monitoring apps in iOS that’s using Google Healthy service. The search giant’s health management portal also paired with dozens of other services (a heaping handful can be seen in the image above) to aggregate and track all of your data, and share it with family members, friends, and doctors.

The service didn’t have the widespread impact that Google expected, however, so it’s taking Health offline after the clock strikes midnight on January 1, 2012. You’ll have another year to download your info, or send it directly to competing services.

Also on the chopping block is PowerMeter, a free energy monitoring tool that pairs with smart power meters and other energy monitoring devices to help users better understand consumption habits and ultimately reduce costs. That project will get the boot from Mountain View on September 16th, but you’ll be able to log in to your account to download a CSV file.

Nokia prototype with Android surfaced on the web, most probably won’t arrive on stores

Nokia prototype with Android surfaced on the web, most probably won’t arrive on stores

Nokia has jumped over to the Windows Phone 7 bandwagon, and even killed off its own MeeGo and Symbian OS. Many yearned why Nokia didn’t jump onboard the Android ship, but it seemed that Nokia did flirt around with Android before deciding on Mr Elop’s ex-company. We don’t know if this device is “super confidential” or not, but we’ve just come across yet another Nokia N9 lookalike with a non-MeeGo operating system on board. Well, it looks that way, anyhow.

There’s no way to verify that the Android homescreen we see above is a legitimate Gingerbread installation and not a mere screenshot (the resolution looks all wrong, for one thing), but the source of this image is the same Chinese fellow that posted a picture of Nokia’s Windows Phone prototype, the Sea Ray, way back in May, so we’re inclined to believe he’s got an inside line on these things.

Additionally, the undersized Android UI elements on the screen actually encourage us to believe that this is indeed a Nokia testing device — if we were going to fake something like this, we’d use a regular screen grab for our tomfoolery — and Stephen Elop has openly admitted that Nokia spent a couple of wild seconds contemplating a switch to Android. Well, folks, here’s what that alternate future might have looked like.

Call of Duty: Black Ops trailer shows Annihilation maps in action

June 27th, 2011

A man in a burger joint is serving up Call of Duty: Black Ops maps. An expensive meal, no doubt, but the zombie course might make it worth the price… maybe. The Shangri-La setting looks like it could be the most interesting environment of all of Call of Duty: Black Ops’ maps. The pack is set to be released on the Xbox on June 28. Using former Black Ops map packs as an example, Annihilation will come to PC a few weeks later, and likely share the £10/$15 price point as First Strike and Escalation.

Panasonic ToughBook C1 gets upgraded with faster processor and improved battery life

It may not look any different from the outside, but Panasonic has made some not insignificant upgrades to its rugged, 12.1-inch ToughBook C1 convertible tablet. That starts off with a new Intel Core i5-2520M vPro processor (2.5GHz, Turbo Boost-able to 3.2GHz), along with a standard 320GB 7,200 rpm hard drive (up from 250GB before), and some improved battery life — Panasonic says you can expect twelve hours from a pair of hot-swappable batteries, or six hours with one. It also says its various improvements contribute to a start-up time that’s 30 percent faster than the previous model, although that will obviously vary in real world use. Somewhat unfortunately, the convertible’s base price tag has also seen a slight upgrade — it’ll now start at $2,599 instead of $2,499 when the new model rolls out next month.

Visidon Applock grants you Android access with your pretty face

June 27th, 2011

Visidon’s Applock is the latest app that prevents the privacy-adverse from messing with your personally curated app collection. Have a ‘decent looking’ significant lover but don’t want your bros to know? No sweat — snap a pick with your front-facing cam, enable the face-lock in your settings, and those texts are as good as blocked. However, do remember that this is not an app made by the FBI or CIA or Google itself, and so you can’t expect it to over-achieve. It’s far from foolproof, as some comments indicate an extended bit of facial-wriggling tricks the app into unlock mode.

PS3 Hacker George Hotz Lands Job at Facebook

PS3 Hacker George Hotz Lands Job at Facebook

George “GeoHot” Hotz, famed for his hacking of the iPhone and PlayStation 3 (and subsequent court dramas), has apparently found gainful employment – at social networking behemoth Facebook apparently.

A report on Tech Unwrapped, citing hackers who have been in contact with Hotz since his settlement with Sony, says Hotz has been turning down new hacking challenges/opportunities because he “doesn’t want that much attention”, and is instead now working at Facebook.

According to those with access to his site, Facebook messages left on Hotz’s account say that he began working at the site in May, and revealed the move to his friends on June 17.
