The World’s Most Gargantuan Diesel Engine

The World’s Most Gargantuan Diesel Engine

It may shock you that a lot of the stuff we buy is made in China. In order to keep up with the mammoth demand for Snuggies, Shake Weights and other trappings of modern society, the Emma Mærsk makes the trip in four fewer days than the average container ship on a China-to-California run.

By the way, the Emma Mærsk is the most vast container ship in the world. At over 1300 feet long, it weighs 170,974 tons and carries 11,000 twenty-foot shipping containers. To move this mammoth vessel at its cruising speed of 31 knots (vs. the standard 18-20), you’ll need more than some puny nuclear reactor—you need the 109,000Hp Wärtsilä-Sulzer RTA96-C, a 44-foot tall, 90-foot long diesel engine.

The phone that runs on Windows 7 Home Premium

The phone that runs on Windows 7 Home Premium

It’s the world’s smallest PC that fits into the palm of your hand, and it runs Windows 7. Not Windows Phone 7, but the actual 32-bit Japanese version of Windows 7 Home Premium (with SP1)…. at least, that’s what Fujitsu claims.

Thursday the company announced that its new F-07C mobile phone is slated to land in Japan from NTT DOCOMO beginning July 23, 2011. According to the company, the device comes equipped with basic PC functionality: an Intel Atom processor, the Windows 7 OS, a two-year Microsoft Office Personal 2010 license, and the latest version of Internet Explorer 9, all these on a smartphone. Users simply switch from mobile mode to Windows 7 mode with the touch of a button.

The actual specs claim the device sports a 4-inch SVGA touchscreen (1024 x 600), a 5.1MP camera, a 1.2 GHz Intel Atom Z600 CPU, 1 GB of LPDDR400 memory, a 32 GB SSD and IEEE802.11b/g/n connectivity with speeds up to 65 Mbps. There’s also a USB port for connecting a keyboard or mouse, and an HDMI output jack for connecting to an HDTV. There’s even a slide-out QWERTY keyboard for typing on-the-go.

“By combining both PC and mobile phone functionality, F-07C opens the door to a range of new uses,” the company said Thursday. “With support for Osaifu-Keitai, i-mode mail, i-concier, and other services from Docomo, as well as security features like Omakase Lock, the new mobile phone allows owners to take advantage of features that they are accustomed to using.”

Anonymous Teases NATO Hack, Challenges FBI

Anonymous Teases NATO Hack, Challenges FBI

Thursday NATO said it was investigating claims that “hactivist” group Anonymous had breached its security and obtained “scads” of confidential material.

The group made its latest feat known via Twitter early Thursday morning, claiming to be sitting on 1 GB of sensitive data. It even offered a sample, a NATO Restricted PDF, but the file has sense been removed. Given the sensitivity of its new-found booty, the group actually refuses to publish all the data, saying that to do so would be “irresponsible.”

“Hi NATO. Yes we haz [sic] more of your delicious data,” the group tweeted. “You wonder where from? No hints, your turn. You call it war; we laugh at your battleships.”

“NATO is aware that hacker group released what it claims to be NATO classified documents on the internet,” a NATO spokseman said in a statement. “NATO security experts are investigating these claims. We strongly condemn any leak of classified documents which could potentially endanger the security of NATO allies, armed forces and citizens.” Read more…

Google listed as a Zynga investor

Google listed as a Zynga investor

Monday afternoon Farmville developer Zynga reportedly filed a 619-page document (S-1) with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), tripled in size compared to its original initial public offering (IPO) filing on July 1. What this means is that the new document is jam-packed with information not provided in the previous IPO filing including a long list of investors that just so happens to reveal Google in the #1 spot.

Does this mean Google is Zynga’s biggest investor? It may be just a coincidence that it resides at the top of the list, but at least the filing clearly verifies previous reports that Google has dumped money into the developer despite denials. It also doesn’t mean that Google plans to yank Farmville off Facebook, as the list also includes other notable investors like LinkedIn Chairman and co-founder Reid Hoffman, early Facebook investor Peter Thiel, investment firm Union Square Ventures and others. Bill Gates wants to reinvent the toilet?

July 22nd, 2011

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced that it has awarded Delft University of Technology a grant to develop a new type of toilet, one that might need you to login in order to pee. They say that this new device would process human waste much differently, especially without the use of water.

Sylvia Mathews Burwell, President of the Foundation’s Global Development program, said at the AfricaSan3 Conference in Kigali, Rwanda, that the toilet has not been reinvented in centuries and has only reached about 2.6 billion people around the world. The fact that toilets are not available everywhere is causing a monumental sanitary problem that is a catalyst for the development of diseases that are filling half of all hospital beds in developing countries.

Future toilets should not require a significant infrastructure, work without water and recycle human waste to energy sources. For example, waste could be converted into bio fuel, fertilizer and even fresh water. Specifically, Mathews Burwell said that the “Toilet 2.0″ could be an electricity generator, a urine-diverting device that recovers clean water on site and function as a production device for minerals and biological charcoal.

The grant is part of a $41.5 million investment in water, sanitation and hygiene, the Foundation said.

William Shatner temporarily (or accidentally) kicked off Google+

William Shatner might be an early adopter but it seems someone at Google may be getting in the way of his playing with Google+.

They say celebrity endorsement is often the best way to advertise your product and attract new users. However, it seems Google this week accidentally snubbed a celebrity that was trying to check out its newest social venture. William Shatner yesterday complained via his Twitterfeed that he had been booted from Google+ for ‘violating standards.’ Read more…

LulzSec is Back: Groups Targets Murdoch, the Sun

It wasn’t too long ago that LulzSec announced it was abandoning ship and disbanding following a successful 50 days of hacking. However, it seems the scandal surrounding Murdoch’s News of the World newspaper has drawn the crew out of retirement. LulzSec spent yesterday targeting News of the World sister paper the Sun. Its efforts included redirecting all Sun.co.uk readers to the LulzSec Twitter feed and, for a time, a story about Rupert Murdoch being found dead. Reuters reported that staffs at other News Corp papers, such as the Sunday Times, were told to change their passwords. Read more…
