Linux Receives 20th Birthday Video from Microsoft

July 22nd, 2011

Linux will be 20 years old on August 26, and apparently someone’s paying attention to that. Microsoft has apparently submitted a birthday video just in time to the Linux Foundation, which posted the video on YouTube.

The video takes a very casual approach to the battle that has had a serious tone since the mid-1990s, and has sailed through especially tough claims of Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, who described Linux as cancer back in 2001 and repeatedly noted that Linux is violating Microsoft’s patents. However, the casual tone in this video is friendly and even ends in offering Linux a truce. Can Microsoft and Linux co-exist? Microsoft thinks so.

At least on this level, Microsoft admits that it was wrong to consider Linux’ networking ideas as “childish”, and concedes that there is bickering going on still today. However, this virtual birthday cake is a nice gesture that surely paints a how-cute-smile on your face. As mean as Microsoft has been, this video is a nice touch.

Fake Apple Store in China look so real

We’re used to seeing fake products and imitation products manufactured in China, either looking exactly like the real deal, or with the brand logo changed slightly. But this… this is something else. A fake Apple Store selling fake Apple products yet looking almost like a real Apple Store!

Love it or hate it, shopping at the Apple store is a unique experience. The peppy staffs, the blue shirts, the genius bar, the wooden tables that make the products seem like artifacts on display at a museum. Yes, Apple has certainly put a lot of personality into its brick and mortar stores. However, that doesn’t mean the experience can’t be replicated, if you’ve been to one. Read more…

Solar Electric Boat Offers Eco-Friendly Cruising

Dubbed the Agua Moura, this eco-friendly boat offers users a green way to cruise through the Santa Clara lake of Portugal. Designed by Victor Vicente, the Agua Moura runs on electric power gathered from the sun. The boat runs entirely on electricity, allowing eco-conscious passengers to be at ease and enjoy the wonders of the lake without having the worry about any harmful emissions.

Solar Electric Boat Offers Eco-Friendly Cruising

Equipped with two electric engines powered by a solar panel clad roof, the boat is capable of cruising at a speed of 5 knots. It isn’t exactly a huge cruise ship with its length of 12.40 meters, but the Agua Moura can comfortably accommodate twelve guests. Amenities include a spacious dining area, bathing platform, toilet facilities and all of the necessary safety measures you could ask for.

Solar Electric Boat Offers Eco-Friendly Cruising

Built in 2008 by Ecobuilders, the Agua Moura is just one of many projects designed with environmentally friendly applications and results. It isn’t the only solar powered boat out there, but the Agua Moura and similar boats could work wonders on reducing ocean pollutants. We’re sure plenty of friendly sea creatures would love to have more Agua Moura-like ships to turn up around the world.

Lenovo can’t wait for Windows 8, intros 10.1-inch IdeaPad Tablet P1 with Windows 7

All these while, we’ve seen a few Windows 7 tablets running full scale version of the popular OS. However, most of them looked so bulky and ugly, and weights a tonne. This time, Lenovo’s going to fix things and make a stand for Windows 7 tablets, by introducing the IdeaPad Tablet P1.

Within, you’ll find a 1.5GHz Intel processor, a 1280 x 800 capacitive touchpanel, up to 2GB of DDR2 memory, up to 64GB of SSD storage, built-in Bluetooth / 3G / WiFi, a USB 2.0 connector, microSD card slot and a docking port.

You’ll also get an integrated 2 megapixel webcam up front, support for stylus input and an enclosure that’s 14.5mm thick; for perspective, the absolutely delectable Galaxy Tab 10.1 measures just 10.9mm from top to bottom. The company’s giving you the option of snagging this in silver-gray or “Clementine Orange,” the latter of which is obviously the frontrunner in the race to awesome.

The sealed two-cell battery is said to be good for six hours of use, compared to the 8.7 hours that the same cell gets while situated in the Android-powered K1. Lenovo’s not serving up pricing details on this one just yet, but you can look forward to not looking forward to its Q4 2011 arrival.

Guitar with Laser System Detects Pitch

July 22nd, 2011

Jammers begone, for smashing your guitar everyday isn’t cool anymore. Pickers with LED are so 2001. What could be more deadly than a rockstar with a guitar and 2-meter long hair? How about a rock star with a guitar with freakin’ lasers attached to it! Okay maybe these lasers don’t exactly burn through things, but the Laser Pitch Detection Pickup system utilizes lasers mounted on the guitar in order to detect the pitch of a string before it is even plucked.

By detecting the pitch before the string is played, the latency when recording could become significantly lower. This allows a musician to transform their six string guitar into an efficient MIDI synthesizer using an interface or special pickup. By reducing the delay between the musician’s plucking and the resultant tone, the MIDI recorder is able to better synchronize its sound. According to Gizmag, even the fastest of conventional MIDI systems could experience a latency of 12ms.

Developed by M3i Technologies, the Laser Pitch Detect can also be used on any stringed instrument with a fingerboard such as a bass guitar or a violin. Even if you aren’t recording with your guitar, the LPD system provides some pretty cool visual effects. Unfortunately the technology is still in its developmental stages but M3i hopes to make it available commercially sometime in 2012.

Apple tops Android in enterprise

Apple tops Android in enterprise

BlackBerry used to rule the boardroom, but over the past few years we’ve seen a steady uptick in the number of enterprise users switching to their OS of choice. So who’s going to be the successor to the BlackBerry throne? Well, according to Good’s latest report, Apple devices have fast become the preferred companions for its customers and it looks like the iPad’s leading the way.

The enterprise provider shows that in Q2 2011, users activated more iPads than Android smartphones and tablets combined. What’s more, iPads made up 95 percent of tablet activations, with Android tablets taking in only 3.1 percent. Smartphone adoption was a slight bit more balanced, but Apple still came out on top with 66 percent over Android’s 33 percent.
