Apple 27-inch Thunderbolt Display

Along with today’s MacBook Air and Mac mini updates, Apple has also updated their 27” Cinema Display. The display now goes by a new name: the Apple Thunderbolt Display (ATD). As the name implies, the display now features Intel’s new Thunderbolt interface, which Apple has heavily adopted in all new 2011 Macs. The ATD is world’s first commercially available Thunderbolt display and the second Thunderbolt device, the first one being Promise’s Pegasus enclosure.

Apple Mac OS X Lion available now in the App Store

Apple Mac OS X Lion available now in the App Store

For ‘developers’ willing to shell out $99 for an annual membership in Apple’s group of Mac OS app creators, Lion is old news already. But the rest of you can finally download Apple’s latest operating system — Mac OS 10.7 — by hitting up the App Store on your Snow Leopard (10.6.8)-equipped Mac, assuming it’s powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, i5 or i7 processor.

The 4GB download could take over hours pending your Internet speed, even on a high-speed connection it may still take an hour, but once you have the installer in hand the upgrade process itself should be complete in about 20 minutes. As Apple previously announced, those with slower connections can also download Lion at an Apple retail store, and the company’s also now revealed that it will be offering it on a USB thumb drive as well, which will be available through its online store later this August for $69.

Those that are going to buy the new MacBook Air and Mac Mini will have them preloaded so don’t worry. Oh, and if you’ve bought a new Mac lately that has a purchase date after 6 of June, you can also redeem your free Mac OS X Lion from Apple’s redemption program.

Apple refreshes MacBook Air with Sandy Bridge, Thunderbolt, and backlit keyboards

Finally, the highly anticipated update for the MacBook Air has arrived. No ARM processors, no new looks, just some speed bumps, Disney bolts, and trendy backlit keyboard. But that’s good, because that’s what we like about the MacBook Air. Oh yeah, Lion’s tagging along this time!

Dota 2 coming “soon” via improved Steam download system

Valve detailed their plans for an improved download system for Steam over the weekend in a post on Steam, saying that “soon, Dota 2 will be delivered using it.” When Dota 2 was announced last October, Valve slated it for release this year. Since then there’s been very little information beyond the impressive character art, but we may see a lot more shortly. Valve are listed to show an unnamed strategy game at Gamescom next month, and developer IceFrog has said in a Q&A that at some stage “there will certainly be an opportunity to get involved with beta testing Dota 2.” We’ll have to wait and see what Valve show in Cologne on August 17.

The 3rd Episode for Sony’s Android tablet advertisement still looks confusing

The 3rd Episode for Sony’s Android tablet advertisement still looks confusing

It’s the 3rd episode already, and yet things still haven’t changed. There video still tell you absolutely nothing new about the tablets as the marketing team continues to show their potential extra-curricular indulgences. Sony leads us even deeper into the late-night realm of desktop toys and the tablets they love. Shots of the stylish slates displaying video and gaming functionality are all but hidden in a “filled with fun” maze of booby-trap triggered contraptions. It’s a romp through the sort of endearing Tim Burton-esque, high-art nightmare Sony’s dabbled in for past Playstation campaigns, so it’s actually nothing new. Hit the jump to watch the vid.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 getting £250 “Ear Force” headset

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 getting £250 “Ear Force” headset

How much would you be prepared to pay to hear Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 at its best? If the answer is “between £90 and £250″ then you might be interested in the range of new premium headsets from Turtle Beach, improbably named “Ear Force.”

The best headset is called Ear Force Delta, because, according to action movies, delta team is always the best team (damn I missed Delta Force games). It has its own carrying case (Carry Force?) and comes “pre-loaded with unique custom Modern Warfare 3 presets and voice prompts.”

Ear Force Delta is specified as coming to the Xbox 360 and the PS3, with no mention of a PC release yet, so Modern Warfare 3 PC fraggers may have to look a little further down the list. Ear Force Bravo offers the same Modern Warfare 3 presets as its more macho Delta cousin, but at the low, low price of £169.99.

If that’s a little too steep, then consider Ear Force Charlie. It has “eight amplified, acoustically-angled speakers delivering discrete surround sound” and is described as being “tournament grade.” The final grade is Ear Force Foxtrot. Those cans will set you back £90 – the equivalent of seven ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops’ map packs.

Google+ app for iPhone now available

Google+ app for iPhone now available

Google promised that iPhone users would soon be getting a Google+ app of their own, and it’s now here. Not surprisingly, it looks a lot like the Android app, including views of your main stream and nearby users, sharing via Circles, and support for the Huddle group messaging feature. It’s not a universal app, though, so iPad users are still left out for the time being, as are those with an iPod touch, for yet reasons unknown.

Google’s Punit Soni notes that there was a small issue that initially caused a test version of the app to to be served from the App Store. If you grabbed the app as soon as it was available (within the first hour and 40 minutes, specifically), you’ll likely have to re-download it to get the current version (1.0.1.1809).
