AntiSec Releases 90,000 Military Email Logins
July 13th, 2011
AntiSec infiltrated the server of a cyber-security specialist and published login details of 90,000 military email accounts. Shortly after 8 p.m. Monday night, the notorious “hacktivist” collective simply known as AntiSec published the login details of 90,000 military email addresses as a torrent on The Pirate Bay. As part of their Military Meltdown Monday campaign, the hackers reportedly infiltrated the servers of military contractor firm Booz Allen Hamilton (BAH) who supposedly specializes in cybersecurity. “We infiltrated a server on their network that basically had no security measures in place,” the group writes. “We were able to run our own application, which turned out to be a shell and began plundering some booty. Most shiny is probably a list of roughly 90,000 military emails and password hashes (md5, non-salted of course!). We also added the complete sqldump, compressed ~50 MB, for a good measure.” Solar power street lamp saves the earth while promoting recycling
July 13th, 2011
Designed by Li-Te Lo, Song-Jung Chen, Tai-Yen Lee, Chun-Wei Hsu and Cheng-Yu Tsai, this simple street lighting concept features an award winning blend of eco-friendly solar power and waste disposal. Utilizing solar panels to gather energy throughout the day, these street lamps run on solar energy while keeping the streets clean with their conveniently integrated trash bins.
With several different, color coded trash bins to ensure all different kinds of trash or recycling products get placed in their proper places, the City Context concept provides both an aesthetically pleasing effect along with its environmentally friendly results. Assigned garbage collectors will be able to remove and replace the trash bins using a magnetic card to ensure there is no tampering. The City Context is a simple, effective way to reduce garbage on the streets but may face problems with implementation. As green as the concept may be, it could be very costly to replace enough street lamps in a city to even have any measurable effect. Apple warns iOS users not to download PDFs
July 13th, 2011
The PDF vulnerability apparently still lingers in iOS, and if you didn’t know, Cydia and JailbreakMe both have patch for that loophole. Last week Germany’s Federal Office for Information Security issued a warning claiming that a security hole in several versions of iOS leaves users vulnerable to malicious code contained in infected PDF files. The exploit, originally uncovered by a team of hackers at JailbreakMe.com, grants the hacker administration privileges over Apple’s devices, giving access to passwords, banking information, email, contact information and even allows for telephone conversation interception… all of which is undetected by the user. So far, the only available patch released to resolve the issue is for jailbroken Apple devices. And so far, there have been no reports of hackers actually taking advantage of this newly-discovered exploit. Read more… No Mango for Windows tablets, go eat your bananas!

SOURCE via Electronista HTC tells Apple to try competing, rather than suing
July 13th, 2011
Apple has proven, time and time again, that it is not shy about dragging its competitors before the ITC over patent disputes, but from what I see over here, surely not a very friendly corporate. And, while its fellow smartphone makers have never held back from defending themselves, HTC’s general counsel Grace Lei had some particularly pointed words for Jobs and co. regarding Cupertino’s latest volley of suits. In a statement Lei said that, “HTC is disappointed at Apple’s constant attempts at litigations instead of competing fairly in the market.” This is the second time Apple has attempted to block the import of devices from the Taiwanese manufacturer, and the purveyors of all things “I” are also currently on the offensive against Samsung, GetJar, and Amazon in patent and trademark disputes. At this rate the company is probably spending almost as much on legal fees as it is on the engineers and designers tasked with whipping up its next generation of mobile products. July 13th, 2011
On Monday, Hauppauge Digital announced the release of its new internal HD video recorder for the PC, the Colossus. According to the company, the PCI Express x1 card features both component (YcrCb) and HDMI inputs for real-time H.264 compressed recordings. This means that consumers can now record at resolutions up to 1080i from unencrypted feeds flowing from video game consoles, cable TV and satellite set top boxes. “We have had phenomenal success with our external HD personal TV recorder, the Hauppauge HD-PVR,” said Yehia Oweiss, Hauppauge Digital’s Vice President of Sales EMEA. “Due to high demand we have now released an internal version of this product and included an HDMI input so that users can now record directly from any un-encrypted HDMI source too.” Read more… Audi A8 to star in new Transporter TV series
July 13th, 2011
The Transporter film series is taking a detour from the silver-screen to arrive in TV land. Called – crazily enough – Transporter, the new Cinemax series stars a man who is quite good at… transporting. Lead actor Chris Vance’s preferred method of transportation will reportedly be the redesigned Audi A8, which we think should fit the bill quite nicely. After all, a 372-horsepower, 4.2-liter V8 paired with Quattro all-wheel-drive, excellent seats and a 1,400-watt B&O sound system should be enough to keep driver, passengers and cargo moving along quickly and comfortably. Of course, were I’m the appropriately named Transporter in question, I might wait for Audi to hand over the next S8. |
