Bang & Olufsen announced BeoSound 5 Encore

Bang & Olufsen announced BeoSound 5 Encore

It’s certainly been a while since Bang & Olufsen’s given any love to its gorgeous (but pricey) BeoSound 5, but refining self-proclaimed perfection takes… well, about three years. The more affordable $3,350 BeoSound 5 Encore carries over the svelte 10.4-inch LCD / scroll wheel toting controller from its predecessor, but nixes the BeoMaster music server requirement, allowing it to run headless (and in turn save you bookodles of cash).

So how does one play tunes if it rides solo? With a bevy of new connectivity options: content can now be slung over USB (be it via a “mobile device,” thumb key or hard drive), from a NAS, over A2DP Bluetooth, or from one of 13,000 internet radio stations. It’ll ship in August, which will leave you plenty of time to save up.

HTC CFO says it’s time to ‘figure it out’ with Apple

HTC CFO says it's time to 'figure it out' with Apple

HTC’s CFO Winston Yung appears ready to make a deal with market rival and patent nemesis Apple. The Taiwanese company has had some rather harsh words for the Cupertino crew, and it hasn’t seemed any more conciliatory after getting slapped by the ITC. That may be starting to change, as Yung told Bloomberg, “we [Apple and HTC] have to sit down and figure it out.” He went on to say that the house that Sense built was open to discussions with Jobs and co. but did not venture to guess what a final agreement might look like. Of course, it’s worth pointing out that this is absolutely standard practice, and we’d expect nothing less.

New Sony Walkman pops up on UK retail site

New Sony Walkman pops up on UK retail site

The portable cassette players once nearly universally identified as the Walkman may have seen better days, but their spirit is still alive, so far as Sony is concerned. The company is apparently set to release the latest entry in the line, the slick-looking NWZA865B, a 16GB portable media player with wireless file sharing and music streaming capabilities. CNET points out that the device likely won’t have built-in WiFi, due to evidence from the FCC, which does seem to limit the aforementioned streaming options. The 16GB model is also likely one of a number of capacities to be offered, ranging from 8GB to 64GB. The device is available for viewing on UK retailer Buy.com with a £130 ($213) price tag and a July 31st release date.

iPod Touch 3G image accidentally leaked by Apple

iPod Touch 3G image accidentally leaked by Apple

It’s like clockwork: the closer we get to a supposed Apple launch date, the more “leaked” materials consumers and press uncover, building hype. We’ve seen plenty since the beginning of the year regarding the next iPhone and iPod Touch release, and today is no exception.

Wednesday morning iDownloadBlog discovered that Apple “accidentally” loaded a promo shot of an iPod Touch with 3G capabilities on the iTunes website. On the North American shores, the shot was quickly yanked and replaced with a new version, but the iTunes page over in the UK still conveniently displays the iPod Touch 3G without hesitation, as seen here. The only thing missing from the image is a wireless carrier icon.

The “accidental leak” follows recent rumors that the next-generation iPod Touch will feature 3G capabilities when it’s revealed in September. This feature was actually spotted in iOS 5 Beta 4, represented as cellular and GPS toggles in the iCloud and Settings menu. The initial discovery led to speculation that Apple won’t release an iPhone Nano, but rather intends to equip the iPod Touch with hardware capable of supporting FaceTime and iMessage over a 3G wireless network.

If that’s the case, it’s assumed that the new iPod Touch will require the same data plans used by the iPad 2. But as always, everything is mere speculation and rumor until Apple officially reveals the device in September.

Google’s data suggests tablet usage is less than 1% of Android

Google's data suggests tablet usage is less than 1% of Android

Is there a tablet market or is it just an iPad market? The fact is that we don’t know, as there are no actual sales numbers available from manufacturers. We have to go by industry rumors as well as reports from market researchers, one of which recently stated that Android tablets may have a 30 percent share at this time – and we also heard that Asus EeePad may be shipping more than 400,000 units per month.

However, the actual Android tablets in use may be far below those numbers and the total number of Android tablets in use today could be negligible, if we believe Google’s own numbers. Android Market access data suggest that devices with screen sizes of 7 inches or greater had just 0.9 percent share in early July. If we assume that this number is tied to the number of 135 million Android devices activated so far, it could mean that there are only 1.2 million Android tablets in use at this time – and shipment versus sales has an especially important meaning to Android.

Of course, that is speculation, but Google’s silences on tablet-specific numbers as well as a lack of Android tablet sales data are not encouraging either.

Hacktivist ‘Jester’ took down LulzSec and Anonymous sites

July 28th, 2011

Hacktivist 'Jester' took down LulzSec and Anonymous sitesThe Jester, or rather th3j35t3r, deems himself as a “hacktivist for good” and “obstructing the lines of communication for terrorists, sympathizers, fixers, facilitators, and other general bad guys.” He also claims to be somewhere between 31 and 49 years of age and “an ex-soldier with a rather famous unit” that served two hours of duty as an airborne combat trooper in Afghanistan and other places.

As of late, the Jester has been on a mission to take down Anonymous and LulzSec. Monday he tweeted that the sites of both groups were knocked offline. There’s even indication that he’s gained access to their Twitter accounts.

“People talkin 2 @atopiary @lolspoon @anonymousabu R in fact talking 2 themselves,” he tweeted. “Anyone tweeting from those accounts now is a standin.”

“TANGOS DOWN – @lulzsec aka @atopiary + @lolspoon – having presented them their infos days ago – they decided they’re no longer ‘legion’ #c2p,” reads one tweet. “www.lulzsecurity.com – TANGOS DOWN – @lulzsec @lolspoon and @atopiary,” reads another.

“www.anonyops.com – TANGO DOWN – in cohoots,” he tweeted. “Days ago I handed @atopiary @lulzsec @lolspoon their asses. Today anonyops.com lulzsecurity.com hit.”
