Corsair adds oddball 90GB to their Force GT SSD lineup

Because 30GB and 60GB are just too small, while 120GB is just too much and too expensive. So, the company has unveiled two middling models that might be just right. We begin with the 90GB Force 3, which wields 550MB/s reads and 500MB/s writes at a $159 price point.

For an additional $40, you can bump speeds up by 5MB/s on both counts with the identically sized Force GT. Just like their smaller and larger brethren, the two additions tote SandForce SF-228x controllers as they haul bits over SATA 6Gbps.

The Corsair 90GB Force GT SSD is available immediately, though you’ll need some luck to find one.

Nvidia: Mobile gaming has brighter future

Earlier this year at ECGC 2011, Nvidia’s Tony Tamasi pointed to a monster rig sitting on the stage and said there will always be a market for gamers who want the industry’s fastest GPUs and CPUs installed in their PCs.

And while Nvidia makes a pretty penny in both the consumer and business markets, the company is now seemingly recognizing the industry’s shift over to the mobile and tablet segments. In an exclusive interview with Softpedia, Nvidia’s Senior Product PR Manager for notebooks and Tegra Igor Stanek said that Nvidia is now allocating resources to the mobile segments.

According to Stanek, mobile gaming has gotten bigger than desktop PC gaming, as interest in gaming on the go – whether it’s on a smartphone, tablet or laptop – is on the rise.

The interview initially focused on Nvidia’s gaming laptop efforts, revealing that the company wants to make them more efficient by implementing its Optimus technology. As an example, to preserve battery life, power to the dedicated graphics card in laptops made by Alienware would be cut off when the rig isn’t in gaming mode (rather than shift power to the on-board GPU). This should allow for 5 to 6 hours of actual runtime.

Nvidia is also recognizing its tablet and smartphone gamers. Much like it does with the PC sector (Epic Games especially), the GPU manufacturer is reaching out to mobile game developers to help them optimize their software for Tegra SOCs. Stanek points to the Tegra Zone app for Android as an example, indicating that consumers can find optimized games for their Tegra devices rather than sift through apps cluttering the Android Market and Amazon’s Appstore.

Stanek added that it will be a while before tablets and mobile phones become proper gaming devices, but it won’t be too long before they eclipse the Nintendo 3DS and Sony’s upcoming PlayStation Vita. Strangely enough, he even said that they will eventually eclipse the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and the PC itself.

Looking back to the monster gaming rig sitting on the stage at ECGC 2011, and Tony Tamasi saying that there will always be a market for the enthusiast PC gamer, the idea of smartphones and tablets actually eclipsing the PC sector just seems a little farfetched.

Windows Phone 7 “Mango” Done, Says Microsoft

August 22nd, 2011

Windows Phone 7

It’s now up to the manufacturers to distribute Microsoft’s “Mango” update for Windows Phone 7. Peter Wissinger, Microsoft’s director of Mobile Business in the Nordic countries, reportedly released an official update on Friday in regards to the status of Mango, the massive update for Windows Phone 7. According to Wissinger, the update was actually completed earlier than planned, and is now up to the phone manufacturers to distribute accordingly.

“Now it’s up to our manufacturing partners to release Mango to our customers,” reads the translation. “Microsoft has delivered complete Mango earlier than planned to the manufacturers. Feels good now.”

According to the official Windows Phone Blog, the Windows Phone development team actually signed off on the release to manufacturing (RTM) build of Mango back on July 26.

“This marks the point in the development process where we hand code to our handset and mobile operator partners to optimize Mango for their specific phone and network configurations,” said Microsoft’s Terry Myerson. “Here on the Windows Phone team, we now turn to preparing for the update process. The Mango update for current Windows Phone handsets will be ready this fall, and of course will come pre-installed on new Windows Phones.”

Microsoft’s list of hardware partners includes HTC, LG, Samsung, Dell, Acer, Fujitsu, Nokia and ZTE Corporation. Currently it’s unknown when these manufacturers will release new handsets including the new Mango update although Fujitsu will reportedly release something in September.

It’s also unknown when manufacturers will actually push the update on the current crop of eight devices. Right now speculation points to a time period sometime around the launch of Apple’s iPhone 5 which is rumored to take place in early October. Google’s Ice Cream Sandwich build of Android is also expected to arrive in that timeframe.

Retina Display-equipped iPad 3 looking more and more likely for early 2012

Well, the Wall Street Journal’s headline certainly isn’t going to surprise you — Apple Developing New iPad – that have been a safe assumption since the iPad 2 was announced. Rumors are circulating though that is painting an increasingly convincing picture of a Retina Display-equipped slate shipping in early 2012.

Reports are in that suppliers have already received Q4 orders for parts that may eventually find their way into Apple’s next tablet. Can we say for certain that the iPad 3 will hit shelves in Q1 of next year sporting a 2048 x 1536 screen? ‘No’ is a more realistic answer, but it’s starting to look more and more likely than last year.

SSC Tuatara makes North American debut at Pebble Beach

SSC Tuatara makes North American debut at Pebble Beach

Shelby SuperCars (SSC) first showed off its forthcoming supercar, the Tuatara, last month in Shanghai, and now they’re showing the car in Monterey, California. The Tuatara (pronounced twu‐tar‐ah), was unveiled earlier today on the concept car lawn at Pebble Beach.

Designed by Jason Castriota of Ferrari P4/5 fame, the Tuatara is SSC’s second supercar. While the car you see here is a design model, the production version will feature a bespoke twin-turbo 7.0-liter V8 producing 1,350 horsepower, a carbon fiber sub-frame chassis, and one-piece carbon fiber wheels.

While the car seen here lacks a full interior and isn’t a complete runner, the design has undeniable presence, with a futuristic yet organic look that is miles ahead of its predecessor, which looked far more kit-car than supercar. What’s more, the engine is said to be an all-new creation, it won’t be General Motors-based like its forebearer.

Shelby founder Jerod Shelby mentioned that he already has five pre-orders for the car, which will be built in Washington state. Shelby is hoping to build about 16 units per year, but the facility will have a capacity of 40 units should the demand be there. He estimates that deliveries will start in the first quarter of 2013, with each example going for “just in excess of one million dollars.”

While the Tuatara’s predecessor, the Ultimate Aero Twin Turbo, set a new ‘production car’ top speed record of nearly 256 mph in 2007 (since eclipsed by Bugatti), the ever-ambitious Shelby plans to take an example to the Nürburgring soon in hopes of setting the production car record.

Razer says “PC gaming is not dead”, we strongly agree!

August 22nd, 2011

Need for Speed Hot Pursuit

Looks like Razer’s not buying the whole “console > PC” argument. The company just went live with a new website that couldn’t possibly be more esoteric. Aside from telling us that “there’s something terribly wrong with gaming today,” we aren’t given much to go regarding its impending announcement. Apparently, something “big” is coming on the 26th of August, and whatever it is (Switchblade with DotA 2 preloaded, perhaps?), it’ll remind the world that PC gaming is, in fact, not dead.

Apple eclipses Lenovo’s sales in emerging Chinese market

Apple eclipses Lenovo's sales in emerging Chinese market

It’s clear that Apple is very much dominant in the international market, but the same cannot be said in China where counterfeit products and cheap knockoffs are everywhere, or is it?

According to the Financial Times, Apple’s third quarter China sales outstripped Lenovo’s $2.8 billion first quarter results, racking up a commanding $3.8 billion lead in the PC maker’s own backyard. Lenovo’s CEO, Yang Yuanqing, was quick to dismiss the ‘apples to oranges’ financial comparison, citing his company’s inability to compete in the mobile phone segment, and continued strong focus on personal computing.

For what it’s worth, Lenovo does separate out both Hong Kong and Taiwan sales from its mainland report, putting the company on unequal footing with Cupertino which includes the two markets in its total Chinese earnings.

Still, Lenovo has plenty of reason to keep its chin up. It does, after all, have that dominating 31.7 percent market share to lord over Mr. Steve Jobs.
