After an apparently successful start in July, Sony has announced that the $0.99 movie and television rental program will become a permanent part of PlayStation Network. Every Tuesday, a selection of movie and TV rentals will see a week-long discount to $0.99 for SD versions and $1.99 for HD versions.
We haven’t heard of most of this week’s selections, apart from Michael Moore’s Sicko and Fred Durst’s The Longshots . See all of this week’s selections after the break.
Is there any automotive rivalry burned into the American psyche as deeply as Ford versus Chevrolet? We don’t think so. Those whose blood runs blue would never dream of piloting anything wearing a Bowtie, and vice-versa.
This being the case, it doesn’t surprise us in the least that Adam, a Ford man through-and-through, challenged Cooper and his Chevrolet to a tug-of-war right in front of all their shirtless buddies. As it turns out, it’d be a fight to the death, at least for one of these lifted pickup trucks.
Now, before all you pick-up fanatics get all up in arms; please understand that neither of these trucks is remotely stock. Both are heavily modified, with suspensions jacked up in order to fit massive tractor-style tires underneath. And, judging from the result of the pull-off, one of them was welded up much more solidly than the other. Check it out for yourself in the video after the break.
It seems like only yesterday we were updating to Firefox 5 (for those hazy on the details, version 5 was officially released June 20), but already it’s time to move on. The latest iteration of Mozilla’s Firefox web browser, Firefox 6, is now here and ready for consumption.
So, what can you expect Firefox 6 to bring? Well, don’t hold your breath for a lot of visual differences. The Firefox UI has remained the same for the most part as the bulk of the changes for this release are happening behind the scenes. The most noticeable cosmetic change is that the address bar now highlights the domain of the website you’re visiting. Under the hood there’s added support for the latest version of WebSocket as well as stream-lined performance when it comes to start times and opening large numbers of tabs at once. There’s also the addition of a new permissions tool that will allow the end-user better control of which websites are storing what information (cookies, passwords, location, etc.).
The International is right around the corner, and in order to get you hyped up for the global public debut of DotA 2, Valve has a question for you: “What does a hero truly need?”
If you listen to the gorgeously animated wizard/wiseman in the trailer above, a hero’s needs depend on their circumstances. Archers may need speed, warriors may need strength, and floaty lightning people obviously need floaty lightning. If you listen to the millions of people anxiously awaiting the start of Gamescom, however, the answer is “immediate, total and unending access to this game.”
It’s impossible to keep something this big under wraps, the deep, dark bowels of the internet have regurgitated these purported in-game screenshots. It’s important to note that the veracity of these screens is still uncertain, and that we won’t truly know how the game looks until later this week. HTC has launched another lawsuit against Apple, claiming that Macs, iPhones, iPads, Apple TV, AirPort, Time Capsule, and the iPod infringe three of its patents.
As it is common for such suits, HTC wants Apple to be banned from violating its patents, which would include an order that would force Apple to halt making, selling, or importing any infringing devices. There is also the usual request for Apple to pay damages for willful infringement, as well as compensation for HTC’s attorney fees.
HTC lists three patents, two of which were granted in 2008 and one in 2010. The documents refer to (1) a circuit and operating method for integrated interface of PDA and wireless communicating system, (2) multipoint-to-point communication using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing and (3) a method for orderwire modulation. The suit is just another chapter in an ongoing smartphone patent war that was, in this case, started by Apple with a suit against Apple that affected a total of 20 Apple patents. According to the International Trade Commission, HTC may have infringed on two Apple patents and we were under the impression that HTC was in talks with Apple to settle the claims.
This most recent lawsuit suggests that Apple and HTC may be negotiating for quite a while.
Randi Zuckerberg, the sister of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and the site’s current marketing director, believes that anonymity on the Internet has to “go away.” She made this revelation during a recent panel discussion on social media and cyberbullying hosted by Marie Claire magazine.
“The use of real names online could help curb bullying and harassment on the web,” she told the audience. “I think anonymity on the Internet has to go away. People behave a lot better when they have their real names down. I think people hide behind anonymity and they feel like they can say whatever they want behind closed doors.”
“There’s so much more we can do,” she added. “We’re actively tying to work with partners like Common Sense Media and our safety advisory committee.”
Christopher Poole, founder of 4chan, disagrees with Zuckerberg’s observation. “Where there’s no risk of failure, experimentation flourishes,” he said. “On websites that require you to login via Facebook, the cost of failure is really high because you’re contributing as yourself. As a result, mistakes are attributed to who you are. I believe real names should only be required in scenarios where your actions can hurt others; in other cases, anonymity is just fine.”
