Comex, the hacker behind JailbreakMe.com, is joining Apple as an intern. If you didn’t know, JailbreakMe.com made it extremely easy for iOS users to jailbreak their devices simply by visiting a website. Comex announced the hiring on his Twitter:
It’s been really, really fun, but it’s also been a while and I’ve been getting bored. So, the week after next I will be starting an internship with Apple.
Forbes unmasked Comex as Nicholas Allegra, a 19-year old Brown University student from Chappaqua, NY. In that article, Allegra described jailbreaking as “like editing an English paper… You just go through and look for errors. I don’t know why I seem to be so effective at it.”
Allegra’s latest jailbreak utilized an exploit in Apple’s PDF renderer to run custom software to crack iOS devices. Apple patched the bug after little more than a week, but the elegant solution, and the complete ease with which it allowed users jailbreak their phones, illustrate the talent that Allegra has.
The Forbes article ended by wondering if Apple’s security team needs a new intern. It seems that they do, though Allegra didn’t specify what he will be working on at Apple.
This isn’t the first time Apple has hired from the jailbreak community. Earlier this year MobileNotifier developer Peter Hajas was picked up as an Apple summer intern. Unlike Hajas, however, Allegra has actually been responsible for some of the tools that have made jailbreaking possible on the iPhone.

AMD’s Bulldozer is one of the most highly-anticipated CPU architectures in recent memory. For those who are eager for more info on this new processor design, some new slides outlining Zambezi for the Socket AM3+ platform recently surfaced.

Breaking down the eight-core “Bulldozer” die, we find four modules that are each composed of two cores. Each module packs 2 MB L2 cache for a total of 8 MB. The is also an integrated Northbridge that contains 8 MB of L3 cache, two 72-bit DDR3 memory channels and four 16-bit receive/16-bit transmit HyperTransport links.

From the slides, we also see how Turbo Core will behave in Bulldozer. When the CPU’s workload is within the TDP headroom, there is no core boost activity. When there is TDP headroom in given a workload, the Turbo Core kicks in and increases clock speed across the board. Conversely, when there is a lightly threaded workload, half the modules go into C6 sleep state, and the remaining cores get clocked up higher for better performance.

Creating a handheld gaming device with built-in 3D capabilities in a market that hasn’t fully accepted 3D as a permanent medium was certainly a bold move by Nintendo, but probably one that hurt the company in the process. Gamers didn’t necessarily flock to the device when it hit retail shelves earlier this year, and as seen in recent weeks, low sales forced Nintendo to reduce the price in order to get units moving off store shelves.
But now company eyes are seemingly focused on the next revision despite a lackluster start. According to “insider” rumors (who were dead on in regards to Project Cafe), a revised model will launch in 2012 with “radically toned down” 3D capabilities. Nintendo reportedly still thinks that warnings of possible eye damage might be hurting sales, and has thus decided to not only re-think its decision to support 3D on a hardware front, but to welcome games that do not contain 3D content.

The new feature is added to the “new tab” page, which adds a third page to the existing “most visited” and Apps pages. The Bookmarks page resembles the look of the Apps page and uses significantly larger icons for each bookmark, while it enables the user to simply browse through a bookmarks structure that may include several layers of folders and subfolders.
At this time, this feature is only functional in the most recent builds of Chrome 15 Canary and even here users can only navigate and select bookmarks. Adding and deleting bookmark is not possible yet.
At first look, there is not much use to this new system, but the goal is quite apparent if we remember that Google has been working on a Touch UI for Chrome for quite some time. This new interface is substantially easier to use, for example on a tablet screen, than the traditional bookmark manager. Expect this new page to debut with Chrome 15.

On Wednesday, Hong Won-pyo, Executive Vice President of Samsung Mobile, said during the company’s weekly executive meeting held in Seoul that Samsung will become the leader in the global mobile phone and smartphone markets, beating out both Nokia and even Apple here in the States.
The challenge isn’t surprising given Samsung’s current legal dispute with Apple over patent infringement claims regarding the Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet. As of late, the company has become less of a long-time Apple supplier and more of an actual competitor, releasing both smartphones and tablets using Google’s Android OS.
“Samsung will become the world’s biggest handset maker within the year as we have good product mix-up according to markets,” he said. “In smartphones, Samsung will further bolster our presence in developed markets with promoting premium lineups. In emerging markets, Samsung has a strategy to boost our share by selling more mid- and low-end phones.”
Samsung is reportedly expecting sub-$200 models to account for more than half of the overall smartphone market by 2015. The company is also hoping to narrow the market gap with Apple here in the States, and may begin its assault on the iPad/iPhone maker with its mysterious “Something Big is Coming” announcement slated for September 1 (which may only be the Galaxy S II reveal).

While there are other emerging interconnect standards that promise speedy transfers, such as Thunderbolt, USB 3.0 still has the momentum from its previous iterations.
Windows 8 will support the latest round of hardware technologies, and its developers have shared with us on the official blog the work being done to integrate “SuperSpeed” USB 3.0 into the operating system.
The Windows team’s work on USB 3.0 support started before there were even any devices available. Microsoft worked with virtual devices until there was real hardware on which to test.

Pay homage to the kings of the International Dota 2 Championships, Na’vi! These six Ukrainian studs won $1 million over the five-day tournament held at Gamescom, followed by China’s Ehome, who landed in second place. The top eight teams competed bravely, so show some respect as follows:
- Na’vi – $1 million
- Ehome – $250,000
- Scythe.SG – $150,000
- MYM – $80,000
- (tied) M5, iG – $35,000 each
- (tied) OK.Nirvana.int, Mith-Trust – $25,000 each
Handing out over $1.5 million to the people who love your game enough to make it a career seems like a wonderful advertising strategy from Valve. Maybe eventually it’ll be altered to include people who love Valve’s games but have day jobs too. Maybe. Gabe, CEO of Valve has promised that a similar competition with similar price pool will be held for DotA 2, and it may even be an annual event.
