Opera acquires Mobile App Store Handster, Opera Mobile Store expanding?

Mobile browser maker Opera Software today announced the acquisition of Handster, Inc., a mobile application store platform company. Handster, based in Illinois with operations in Odessa, Ukraine, supports Google Android, Java, Symbian, Windows Mobile, BlackBerry, as well as netbook and tablet applications.

It offers a white label version of its app store to mobile operators in addition to running its own branded site at Handster.com. Current Handster partners include MTS, Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Huawei and LG.

According to a recent report by Research2Guidance, Handster was the leading third-party application store for Android apps, beating out PocketGear, Amazon’s App Store, GetJar, and a dozen other popular brands. At the time of the report (June 2011), Handster hosted nearly 23,000 apps, with 2,500 more added each month.

Artist creates invisible motorcycle called “Moto Undone”

Artist creates invisible motorcycle called

Close your eyes and picture a motorcycle. Chances are, you’re seeing something with two wheels, an engine sitting right in the middle and a spot for the rider splayed out on top. If you’re Joey Ruiter, though, you might have something else entirely on your brain. Says Ruiter:

We want to re-set the definition of a motorbike, stripping away historical attributes that make them so great. It’s hard to imagine a motorcycle without fancy paint, overpowered motors, exposed mechanical genius, and sweet exhaust tones.

While it’s true that we love seeing exposed elements on our motorcycles, there’s something intrinsically cool about Ruiter’s concept and the way it makes a rider appear as if he’s floating down the road on an appliance… if only because it’s unique.

Taking the concept a step further, this machine is powered by an electric motor and it sends its ride data (speed, distance traveled, etc) to the rider’s smart phone.

Ford debuts full-size Lego model of Explorer at Chicago plant

Ford has created a full-size replica of the company’s new Explorer crafted from Lego bricks. The sculpture was created by 22 designers over the course of 2,500 hours. All told, there are 380,000 individual bricks at work, weighing in at a hefty 2,654 pounds, and a 768-pound aluminum platform supports the creation.

Ford debuts its Lego Explorer at its Chicago assembly plant before shipping it to the new Legoland theme park just outside of Orlando, Florida. The block Explorer will ride all the way down to the sunshine state in a transporter with transparent sides so fellow motorists can view the creation.

Ever wonder how a backhoe gets into a truck?

Ever wonder how a backhoe gets into a truck?

We’ve seen plenty of fail videos showcasing things gone wrong, like crane fails, car-chase fails, and car-race fails. They’re as addictive as the proverbial… well, you know. But when someone behind the wheel gets it right, that can be just as awesome.

That’s why whoever is behind the two wheels of this backhoe deserves a case of something congratulatory: in under three minutes he (or she) puts the earthmover into a dumptruck bed then back on the ground, and sticks both landings. Follow the jump for the video, and of course, don’t try this at your construction site…

Apple thinks we can’t afford the iPad, cutting down its production by 25%

Apple thinks we can’t afford the iPad, cutting down its production by 25%

A clear sign that Google’s Honeycomb is actually very successful at eating up Apple’s iPad market pie, or is it because we just can’t afford to keep on buying an overpriced square board with a screen? Or perhaps they’ve over-estimated their sales target and the highly popular tablet from Cupertino isn’t flying off from the shelves faster enough?

Apple is cutting orders to vendors in the supply chain for its iPad tablet computer, a move that may result in slower sales for companies including Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., JPMorgan Chase & Co. said in a report.

Several supply-chain vendors indicated in the past two weeks that Apple lowered fourth-quarter iPad orders 25 percent, the first such cut that analysts at JPMorgan’s electronic manufacturing services team in Hong Kong said they have ever seen. The report didn’t list the affected companies, and Gokul Hariharan, one of the report’s authors, said he couldn’t comment when reached by Bloomberg News today.

For a vendor such as Hon Hai, the cut could mean a drop to 13 million units in the fourth quarter from 17 million units in the third quarter, JPMorgan analysts wrote in the Sept. 25 report. The report said JPMorgan U.S. analyst Mark Moskowitz, who covers Apple, does not expect to lower his projection of 10.9 million to 12 million units of iPad shipments in the third and fourth quarters after the supply chain adjustments.

Reduced orders from Apple to iPad suppliers could reflect both weakening demand in Europe due to economic conditions there as well as a strategy by Apple, the world’s biggest company by market value, to operate with reduced inventory, Wanli Wang, a Taipei-based industry analyst at RBS Asia Ltd., said today.

“It’s back to reality,” Wang said. “Now it seems even for Apple, due to the market situation, we need to be conservative.”

Thus far there is no confirmation from Apple that it has reduced orders to suppliers, Wang said. Carolyn Wu, a Beijing- based spokeswoman for Apple, didn’t respond to calls for comment on the report today. Edmund Ding, spokesman for Hon Hai, didn’t respond to an e- mail or answer calls to his Taiwan and China mobile phones.

Because of its current dominant market position, Apple doesn’t have to rush to introduce its iPad 3 tablet computer as potential rivals have failed to emerge to siphon sales from the current model, JPMorgan’s Moskowitz wrote in a Sept. 16 report.

Then again, another rival is just around the corner. Amazon.com Inc. may release a product late this year that could become the number-two tablet in the market behind the iPad.

Vodafone Australia teasing us with a red curtain

Vodafone Australia teasing us with a red curtain

Indeed, a red curtain that seemed to be covering a cage that contains a white parrot, or is it a white phone with a logo that resembles a fruit? Frankly speaking, the tagline “End the rumors” is strong enough to conclude that this would most probably be the launching of Apple’s next iPhone, but who knows; maybe it’ll be exactly the opposite, something from the opposite camp?
