Hell plays host to world's largest gathering of hearses

If you’re heading to Hell, you’re probably going to take a ride in a hearse at some point in your journey. Seems only fitting, then, that a group of hearse owners chose the tiny hamlet of Hell, Michigan as the place to set a world record. An official from the Guinness Book Of World Records was on hand to verify that the 51-hearse gathering is a new record in a category that we didn’t even know existed.

Hearse owners descended on Hell to roll into the record books together, and the vehicles arrived in a variety of shapes and sizes. Click past the jump to watch the entire crew ride into the pages of history in a couple of videos. In the second video, skip to the 4:25 mark to catch a glimpse of our favourite hearse of the bunch.

Clarkson says this year’s Top Gear Christmas special will be in India

Clarkson says this year's Top Gear Christmas special will be in India

It has become a tradition that Top Gear cooks out a Christmas Special every year. Jeremy Clarkson has let slip what viewers can look forward to in terms of this year’s Top Gear Christmas Special. As it turns out, James May, Richard Hammond and the curly-haired host are taking to India for filming this year.

At this point, it’s unclear exactly what the trio will get up to in the Asian country, but given that Clarkson hasn’t had kind things to say about the area in the past, we’re all but guaranteed some sort of multi-cultural dust up. Previously, Jezza has called the country’s roads a “war zone.” Clearly, he hasn’t seen what passes for a network of streets in Detroit.

Last year, the Top Gear crew drew the ire of both Muslims and Christians after the trio were filmed wearing the traditional Muslim hijab and depicted the birth of Christ with a baby Stig in a manger. At least they’re an equal opportunity offender. Head over the UK’s WitneyTV to watch the full Clarkson interview talk about India, along with what stars he’d most like to see in the show’s Reasonably Priced Car.

Epic trike racing makes us go gaga

Epic trike racing makes us go gaga

Our history with the tricycle is somewhat spotty. The inherently unbalanced design is only associated with skinned knees and brushes with asphalt in our memories, but apparently not everyone had the same experience. A trio of daredevils have taken to slinging themselves down mountain passes on modified big-boy trikes with nothing but the soles of their shoes for deceleration. Judging by the footage after the jump, the crew can crest speeds of 55 miles per hour, blowing by traffic and generally abandoning all regard for their well-being in the process. We love it.

Now, we’d be derelict in our duties if we didn’t mention that you’d have to be completely mental to try this on your own. If you do decide to take to public streets on a homemade trike, just don’t tell the authorities we told you to do it. Hit the jump to see the insanity for yourself.

A Mercedes built out of 10,000 pieces of scrap metal

A Mercedes built out of 10,000 pieces of scrap metal

Mercedes-Benz never put the 1954 300 SLR “Uhlenhaut Coupe” into production, and the only two examples ever built are locked in its museum. But a trio of German artists will sell you this: a statue of the 300SLR made from 10,000 pieces of scrap metal.

Armin Ciesielski, Peter Brakel and Walter Willer are known as the “Giants of Steel,” making pop-art sculptures of movie characters and vehicles from recycled parts. They worked for seven months on the non-running 300SLR, the latest in a string of vehicles they’ve modeled including a Porsche GT 550, a Bugatti T35 and a Harley.

If Borg-like sculptures are your thing, the Giants are willing to part with their creation for just $95,000, and unlike Lamborghini, they vow to build more if people ask. Given collectors spend a lot more on vehicles to gawk at and never drive, this isn’t such a bad price.

Existing Windows Phones to get Mango update within the next two weeks

Existing Windows Phones to get Mango update within the next two weeks

According to Microsoft’s official Windows Phone Blog, the latest Windows Phone 7 Mango update could arrive in a week or two. The Windows Team indicates it won’t be pushed to your phone OTA when the time comes, so you’ll want to ensure you have the right software (Zune for PC, Windows Phone 7 Connector for Mac) installed on your computer before this all goes down. Now, a word of caution: we’d be completely taken by surprise if every phone received the update on the same day — after all, the NoDo rollout spanned several weeks before it was delivered everywhere — so it’s best if you exercise a degree of patience if your particular handset isn’t ready the very first day, just in case.

Report: Apple to hold media event on October 4th, Tim Cook to unveil the next iPhone

These are not official words of course, but still it’s a more specific news that those rumors. All Things Digital is reporting last night that Apple’s next big media event will be held on October 4th, where freshly minted CEO Tim Cook is expected to unveil the iPhone 5.

Sources close to the situation say Cook will be the main presenter at the event, with execs Phil Schiller, Scott Forstall and Eddy Cue playing supporting roles. This would mark the first time that Cook has actually led an Apple event, adding an extra wrinkle of significance to an already highly anticipated occasion.

The site’s sources went on to say that the next-gen iPhone will be available for purchase “within a few weeks” of the announcement, though All Things Digital acknowledges that the exact date of its unveiling is still subject to change. As always, we’ll be sure to keep you posted as soon as we hear more.
