Canon announces the new S100 shooter, the successor to the S95

Canon announces the new S100 shooter, the successor to the S95

The Canon S95 has always been one of my favourite point ‘n’ shoot cameras. So when Canon announced the successor to the S95 over the long weekend, the gear head in me couldn’t help jumping up and down with joy. Gone is the piddly CCD sensor and in its place lies a 12.1MP CMOS sensor with the bran new DIGIC 5 image processor. The S100 also has a f/2.0 lens for great low light shooting and depth of field as well as a GPS receiver for embedding metadata. Shooting at a top ISO of 6400, I wonder how well the new sensor/processor handles noise in low light. So has Canon got the new King of the Compacts in the S100? Or are cameras like the Olympus XZ-1 and the LX-5 staying strong? Two more shots of the S100 after the break.

Facebook integration comes to Skype 5.4 Beta for Mac

Facebook integration comes to Skype 5.4 Beta for Mac

Looks like the whole marriage between Skype and Facebook as come full circle (kinda) with the latest beta (version 5.4) for the Mac. While the Windows client has had this functionality since summer, the Apple brethren have been looking with puppy dog eyes in envy, unless of course you’d be booting into boot camp just for Skype. Mac Skype-rs will now be able to chat with your Facebook friends, read and update your news feed and even like posts from within your Skype window. What is still missing however is cross platform video chat, but hey, that should be in the works right? Then again I don’t think i’d like to be available to video chat to most of my Facebook anyway! Get your copy of the beta for Mac here!

Intel and Google form partnership for smartphone market, Atom powered Android phone?

Will Intel’s foray into the smartphone market finally be realized in the next year or so? After today’s announcement at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco of the chip maker’s new partnership with Google, we say yes and will be keenly looking forward to their new products.

The idea of Intel going into the smartphone scene came about ever since Intel’s Atom and SOC line started getting smaller and more powerful, but through this strategic partnership with Google, it looks like Android will be optimized to take advantage of the Intel architecture.

“Going forward, all future releases of Android will be optimized – you know, everywhere from the very low levels, at the kernel, and taking advantage of memory management and all the great features of these low-power IA architecture, all the way up to multimedia, 3D graphics, everything that’s part of the system on a chip today. Very excited to be here, and very excited about working closely with colleagues and engineers at Intel.” – Andy Rubin, Senior Vice President Mobile division, Google.

Ubisoft: Ezio and Altair are not blood related

September 21st, 2011

It seemed that Desmond is able to relive both Ezio Auditore Da Firenze and Altair Ibn La`Ahad because both are ancestors to Desmond, but they’re not related to each other. One is from the mother’s side and the other’s from the father’s side. So Desmond has a strong assassin background, which can explain why he’s the chosen one. Hopefully that’ll clear off the complex storyline of Assassin’s Creed, or are you madder now?

Gold plated Bentley spotted in the country of oil and sand

Gold plated Bentley KSA

We know that the peeps over at Saudi Arabia is rich, and I’m not talking about just some CEO-class rich that rides on 7-series and had a Porsche 911 as a weekend car. No, those people ride in style, but what is style? Well, when you’re that filthy rich, you get one of the world’s most expensive vehicle, and turn it ten fold the vale it has. Maybe ‘ten times’ is rather underrated here, because the vehicle you see above is a Bentley plated in gold. Real, hard cold gold! Shows you how much loaded these people are. Could do with a more sexy wheel though.

Thanks to our reader Marlon Kho for the image!

Samsung Nexus S 4G updated to Android 2.3.7, brings Google Wallet support

The long-awaited update that brings Google Wallet to the Samsung Nexus S 4G on Sprint is indeed here, and the build number is Android 2.3.7. There’s a lack on details at the moment, but the announcement has shown up on an official FAQ page on Samsung’s site informing us that build GWK74 is available.

If you’re a proud owner of the now fully-functional device, you should receive a notification stating that an update is available to deliver the goods via an OTA refresh. We’re not sure how long it will take for this to get pushed out to everyone, so a bit of patience may need to be exercised here as you wait.

Qantas testing iPad in-flight entertainment

Starting next month, Qantas will join the throngs of airlines giving passengers more to chew on than honey-roasted nuts, with its Q Streaming experience. The system, which will supply one iPad per passenger, is set to run from the end of October through December and will eventually grow to include other WiFi-enabled devices. While Qantas is claiming “me first” bragging rights, saying it’s the “first airline in the world to trial this wireless streaming product,” we’ve definitely heard of similar in-flight entertainment systems stateside — hello American Airlines.

MSI demos X79 motherboards with PCI Express 3.0 and UEFI BIOS at IDF 2011

While MSI wasn’t quite ready to publicly divulge all the details of its forthcoming X79-based motherboards, it was more than happy to give us a teaser. The famous Taiwanese motherboard manufacturer shows off three upcoming models from the company at IDF, all toting PCI Express 3.0 slots, overclocking buttons and that snazzy UEFI BIOS, despite Intel saying that X79 most probably will not have PCI Express 3.0 support in the final product.

The new UEFI BIOS makes changing settings a snap, and is carried over from the company’s existing Sandy Bridge boards — it even comes with a button that launches a browser, but unfortunately the machines in the booth weren’t configured to support it. We’ll know more in Q4 when Sandy Bridge-E goes live.
