Galaxy Nexus barometer explained

Google’s Galaxy Nexus may be a lot of things: the fourth-coming of Android, an HD Super AMOLED showcase and iPhone 4S competitor. But weather forecaster? Alright, so it won’t give you hourly atmospheric updates with an air swipe, but the built-in barometer that’s got so many of us scratching our heads has a much different purpose. Android engineer Dan Morrill took to the social pages of Google+ to clarify the confusion. Turns out, Sammy added the barometer to help the device more rapidly acquire a GPS lock by delivering altitude coordinates to the required latitude and longitude GPS equation. Morrill goes on to note that the original Xoom also packed a similar feature, so if anything, this Nexus is simply following that Moto tab’s lead.

How many people can you fit in a Volkswagen… Up!?

How many people can you fit in a Volkswagen... Up!?

How many people can you fit in a Volkswagen? It’s a question that’s been around nearly as long as the automaker itself, and usually applies to the Beetle. Back in the 1950s in Australia, 17 people fit into the original. In 2010, a group in Kentucky set the record with 20. Twenty-seven is the most that could squeeze into a New Beetle in 2001, and you can bet someone will try it with the latest Beetle, too. But Volkswagen’s own communications staffs in the UK were curious to see how many of them could fit into the new Up!

How many people can you fit in a Volkswagen... Up!?

So how many did they squeeze in? A total of 16 poor souls – or fifteen ladies and one chap who maybe thought he’d be in for the time of his life but probably found out otherwise. Comfortable or not, they put four on the front seats, seven in the back, one on the dashboard, one in each of the footwells and two in the trunk, with the doors and hatchback closed. Not too shabby, but we bet some group somewhere will manage to squeeze in another couple of petite friends sooner or later.

Toshiba shows off 6-inch tablet display with 498ppi resolution

Toshiba shows off 6-inch tablet display with 498ppi resolution

Toshiba showed off a 4-inch display for cellphones with a 367ppi resolution earlier this year, and the company is now back with an even higher pixel density for its new 6.1-inch display for tablets (or possibly phones, at the rate things are going). This one comes in at an impressive 498ppi, which translates to a resolution of 2,560 x 1,600 — or more than enough for some “photo-realistic” images, according to Toshiba. As for the other key specs, it boasts a 1,000:1 contrast ratio, 16.7 million colors, and 61 percent coverage of the NTSC color gamut — plus viewing angles of 176 degrees both horizontally and vertically. What’s more, Toshiba is even suggesting that the display could also be used for glasses-free 3D, which would cut the resolution in half but still be higher than other comparable displays. Unfortunately, there’s no word on when it might actually hit some tablets, 3D or otherwise.

Twelve South BassJump 2 USB Subwoofer now available

At a glance, one could confuse Twelve South’s BassJump 2 for a 2011 Mac Mini — don’t be fooled though, this USB subwoofer aims for sound that’s anything but. Much like the original BassJump, this guy’s aimed at aiding MacBook speakers by adding extra low end boost, and employing proprietary software to keep it in all in check. Improving on the original, however, the BassJump 2 pumps out eight extra decibels of volume and comes with “remastered software,” notably featuring iMac and Thunderbolt Display support. If it piques your fancy, the BassJump 2 is now available for about $70.

No more Sony Ericsson phones, only Sony

No more Sony Ericsson phones, only Sony

The Sony Ericsson joint venture established on October 1, 2001 is about to end as Sony and Ericsson today announced that Sony will acquire Ericsson’s 50% stake in the joint venture, making the mobile handset business a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sony.

The buyout will cost Sony EUR1.05 billion (around $1,47 billion) in cash and will not only make the phone segment a company subsidiary but will grant Sony access to a broad intellectual-property cross-licensing agreement and ownership of five essential patent families. The deal has been approved by both companies and is expected to finalize in January 2012, subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals.

Snow-white N9 spotted at Nokia World

Nokia’s MeeGo handset N9 is one-of-a-kind smartphone that’s sexy and simple, but how do Nokia up the notch? Well, originally the phone doesn’t come in white color, but now it does, and that just made the N9 even sexier. Originally coming only in black, cyan, and magenta, now the N9 will have an additional color in its lineup, and that’s white. Plain, simple, ethereal white, something that many would love.
