What are the 25 worst passwords of 2011?

Pro tip: choosing “password” as your online password is not a good idea. In fact, unless you’re hoping to be an easy target for hackers, it’s the worst password you can possibly choose.

“Password” ranks first on password management application provider SplashData’s annual list of worst internet passwords, which are ordered by how common they are. (“Passw0rd,” with a numeral zero, isn’t much smarter, ranking 18th on the list.)

The list is somewhat predictable: Sequences of adjacent numbers or letters on the keyboard, such as “qwerty” and “123456,” and popular names, such as “ashley” and “michael,” all are common choices. Other common choices, such as “monkey” and “shadow,” are harder to explain.

As some websites have begun to require passwords to include both numbers and letters, it makes sense varied choices, such as “abc123″ and “trustno1,” are popular choices. Read more…

New Porsche 911 Cabriolet gets magnesium frame soft top

Recent 911 Cabriolets were slightly awkward looking, like hunchbacks, but fat. This is the new Porsche 911 Cabriolet based on the 991 Coupe that made its debut in September in Frankfurt. Like the tin top, the Cabrio looks leaner and more dynamic than the 997 based roadster. It’s lighter than before, too.

HP’s WiFi Touch Mouse X7000 has a Facebook button, only for the right hand

HP's WiFi Touch Mouse X7000 has a Facebook button, only for the right hand

Six months ago, HP got us to look twice at its WiFi Mobile Mouse, which connects to your PC via your home network so that you don’t have to waste a USB port on a dongle or receiver (incidentally, it promises to then work even if there’s no WiFi connection available). Now the outfit’s at it again: it’s quietly started selling the WiFi Touch Mouse X7000, which, as you might have guessed, sports a gesture-friendly touch strip. Before you get too excited, though, it only supports one-fingered scrolling, whereas Microsoft’s Touch Mouse does panning, minimizing / maximizing, docking and revealing the desktop. Like its little brother, the X7000 promises a 30-foot range and nine months of battery life, though for whatever reason this one’s only meant for the right-handed among us. Other differences: this guy has six programmable buttons, not five, including a dedicated Facebook key. Just a heads up: you’ll need not just a PC, but one running Windows 7, so those of you still rocking an XP machine for work are sadly out of luck. It’s on sale for $60 — that’s twenty bucks less than Microsoft’s Touch Mouse but then again, it’s far less touch-friendly. But is that worth the savings? And the Facebook button?! We’ll let you chew on that for a while.

Netflix reveals new user interface experience for Android tablets, iPad version coming soon

Netflix reveals new user interface experience for Android tablets, iPad version coming soon

You’ve already had a peek at it in the Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet, but it seems that redesigned user interface is going to be hitting more than just the holiday’s most-talked about duo. Netflix has made official a newly redesigned user interface experience for Android tablets — one that “makes browsing and instantly watching unlimited TV shows and movies streaming from Netflix better than ever.” The new look provides multiple rows of titles with larger artwork to scroll through, with Neil Hunt, chief product officer at Netflix, noting that the company has seen a “threefold increase in how long Netflix members are watching on their tablets.” As of today, interested consumers can simply update their Netflix app in the Android Market, while iPad users are being asked to wait “a few weeks,” after which the new tablet experience will be dubbed Tabster and led on Twitter by a 17-year old methamphetamine addict. Wait… what?

Minecraft goes gold, and you wonder when it isn’t

Minecraft goes gold, and you wonder when it isn’t

Minecraft creator and Mojang studio head Markus “Notch” Persson said via Twitter that the popular indie sandbox title Minecraft has finally gone gold. The news arrives just four days after the team’s previously projected “gone gold” date of November 11, 2011, and three days before the game is officially released at the inaugural (and sold out) MineCon 2011 event in Las Vegas on Friday.

Minecraft was originally launched as an alpha on May 17, 2009 and then slipped into beta mode on December 20, 2010. In 2011, Mojang launched the “Pocket Edition” exclusively on Sony Ericsson’s Xperia PLAY Android smartphone during E3 2011, and then opened up to portable edition to the rest of the Android market as of October 8.

A version for the Xbox 360 with Kinect will reportedly be playable this Friday during the convention although it’s not slated to hit Xbox LIVE until next year.

As seen here, the first-ever Minecraft convention will take place on Friday and Saturday. Persson will kick things off with his keynote and the official launch of Minecraft, and will be followed by various panels including “Minecraft as a Tool for Education,” “Running A Server,” “YouTube 101″ and more. Attendees will supposedly receive a code that will unlock an alpha version of the studio’s next game, Scrolls.

According to Mojang, over 1 million units had been sold as of January, but that number quickly skyrocketed to over 4 million units at the beginning on November — a stunning 3 million units sold within ten months. Over 16 million gamers have created Minecraft accounts, 12 million of which are seemingly playing the “classic” free versions (single player / multi-player). The full version will supposedly sell for $28.95 when it’s officially released on Friday, but fans can still purchase the sandbox game for its “beta” price of $21.95 until then.
