Free Anti-Malware services for Android failing tests
November 21st, 2011
Out of seven free anti-malware apps downloaded and installed from the Android Market, only one proved to provide decent protection. AV-TEST has released a report claiming that not all free antivirus solutions found on the Android Market will actually protect consumer devices. The company came to this conclusion after testing seven “freeware” applications ranging from Antivirus Free by Creative Apps to Zoner AntiVirus Free by Zoner. Out of this group, Zoner’s solution gave the best performance, detecting 8 out of 10 malware upon installation, and 55 out of 172 during a manual scan. That’s right: that was the best performance out of seven free anti-malware apps. “The results of the real-time guard functionality were quite shocking,” the report states. “The guard should warn the user upon installation of malicious apps. The 10 malware samples were chosen with the help of AV-TEST’s own analysis system, which uses more than 30 virus scanners to analyze the APK files. The test set contains the 10 files, which were most often classified as malware by the virus scanners. Because of the high detection rates these files can be considered as well known and should therefore be detected by a reliable virus-scanner. Did the vendors of mobile security apps know them, too?” According to the test results, Antivirus Free by Creative Apps, GuardX Antivirus and LabMSF Antivirus beta failed to detect malware upon installation. BluePoint AntiVirus Free, Kinetoo Malware Scan and Privateer Lite still warned against one malicious app. In comparison to the free apps, the commercial products of F-Secure and Kaspersky unsurprisingly detected all threats without a problem. To put this problem in perspective, the report points out that the most popular free malware suite of the group is Antivirus Free by Creative Apps with 1,000,000 to 5,000,000 installations, yet it doesn’t offer “reliable” protection. The only free product found to be useful, Zoner AntiVirus Free, has only 50,000 to 100,000 users. “The circulation of obviously near to useless security apps endangers those who trust them and install apps from 3rd party app markets without further auspiciousness,” AV-TEST claims in its report. AV-TEST conducted its test using a Samsung Galaxy Tab and Google’s Android 2.2.1 “Froyo” OS. The products were downloaded and installed through the Android Market, and had to prove their functionality in on-demand-scanning and the detection of 10 widely spread malicious apps. The scanned test set contained 83 Android installation packages (APK) and 89 Dalvik binaries (DEX). No files were older than 5 months. November 21st, 2011
An anonymous source has informed Engadget that Lenovo plans to release a 10.1-inch tablet by the end of the year. This tablet will reportedly sport Nvidia’s just announced 1.6 GHz quad-core Tegra 3 T33 “Kal-El” SoC and Google’s Android 4.0 OS AKA “Ice Cream Sandwich.” According to the source, the tablet will include 2 GB of 1,600 MHz DDR3 RAM and a standard USB host socket covered by a pop-out flap. A fingerprint scanner will also be mounted on the back that will double as an optical joystick. As for other features, the tablet will reportedly sport a back-facing camera of unknown resolution, and what’s described as a “special fusion-skin body.” So far other details such as actual dimensions and weight are unknown, but a handful of screenshots can be viewed here. Nvidia officially announced the Tegra 3 last week, a quad-core SoC that promises to bring PC-class performance levels, better battery life and improved mobile experiences to tablets and phones. Nvidia says the chip provides up to 3x the graphics performance of Tegra 2, and up to 61-percent lower power consumption. The first device slated to receive the super-powered chip will be the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime tablet. Arriving in early December, the Android tablet will offer two capacities: 32 GB for $499 and 64 GB for $599 — the optional keyboard dock will require an additional $149. Early December may also be the same timeframe Lenovo plans to launch its own Tegra 3 tablet, but currently that’s just speculation. Futuremark working on 3DMark for Windows 8
November 21st, 2011
Monday Futuremark said that it’s already working on a new version of 3DMark that’s designed for gaming performance measurement and comparison across all Windows 8 tablets, notebooks and desktops. This upcoming Windows 8-specific edition will also support both x86 and ARM-based architectures. “With Windows 8 gamers will be able to enjoy their games on a wide range of devices from lightweight tablets to heavy-duty desktop rigs,” said Jukka Mäkinen, CEO of Futuremark. “Faced with so much choice it will be hard to work out which devices offer the best value for money. Fortunately 3DMark for Windows 8 will be our most wide-reaching 3DMark ever, able to accurately measure and compare gaming performance across all devices and graphical feature sets available with Windows 8.” Little else is known about 3DMark for Windows 8 (working title) thus far, but Futuremark plans to release the software sometime next year. As indicated, it will measure and compare gaming performance on all Windows 8 devices. It will even offer users a choice of benchmarking in Metro UI or “classic” Windows environments using “stunning real-time scenes” that stress test all levels of hardware. Monday Futuremark invited companies to contribute in the development of 3DMark for Windows 8 via its Futuremark Benchmark Development Program (BDP). This program already includes AMD, Nvidia, Microsoft, Imagination Technology, Dell, HP and other well known companies. Those wishing to participate in the BDP should head here to get specific contact information. AMD releases Interlagos Opterons with 16 Cores, mighty Chipzilla gives a smirk
November 21st, 2011
AMD today has put its Bulldozer processor technology to work with the immediate launch and availability of its Opteron 6200 and 4200 Series processors (formerly codenamed “Interlagos” and “Valencia”). The “Interlagos” Opteron 6200 series features 16 cores, or more accurately, eight dual-core units and four memory channels. The “Valencia” Opteron 4200 features eight cores, or four dual-core units, and two memory channels. In its own comparisons against an Intel Xeon X5670-based system, the Opteron 6276 scored an 84 percent higher performance in Linpack. In Stream, the Opteron 6276 had 73 percent more memory bandwidth over the Xeon X5670. Overall, AMD makes a case that its new Bulldozer-based Opterons are offer more efficient economics for cloud-computing needs with half the power per core, requiring two-thirds less floor space and up to two-thirds lower platform price. AMD also announced the expansion of its 2012 roadmap with the addition of the new Opteron 3000 Series platform. The Opteron 3000 Series platform is targeted to the ultra-dense, ultra-low power 1P Web Hosting/Web Serving and Microserver markets. The first processor will be the 4-8 core CPU code-named “Zurich”, expected to ship in the first half of 2012. “Zurich” is based on the Bulldozer architecture and leverages the new Socket AM3+. The Opteron 3000 series offering is designed for hosting customers who require dedicated servers for their customers. These cloud and web hosting customers appreciate the cost savings associated with a lower cost infrastructure, yet still want to deploy a server-class product with reliability and security features and server OS certification. VIDEO: Bert & Ernie hit TomTom GPS Units
November 21st, 2011
Chances are, if you’re reading this, you’re probably outside of Sesame Street’s target demographic. Then again, who knows right? Anyway, just because you’re too old to watch now, that doesn’t mean you didn’t grow up with Big Bird, Bert, Ernie and the rest of the Sesame Street gang and miss hearing their voices on a regular basis. To that end (or, you know, to appeal to parents with small children), TomTom has just made Bert and Ernie’s voices available for TomTom navigaton devices. Developed in collaboration with Sesame Workshop and Locutio Voice Technologies, the add-on will set you back $12.95. Hmm… I think I still prefer Jezza’s voice, unless they have Mickey or Elmo. Watch Brazilian police intentionally ram car into plane during take-off
November 21st, 2011
GTA V may be coming around, as we’ve seen the trailer. But today we have video of one of the missions. But wait just a second – this isn’t a video game, it’s real life. An in-car video camera has captured footage of two unnamed Brazilian police officers going after some bad guys on a remote runway, Cops-style. One officer can be seen firing a machine gun, just before the driver rams the wing of a plane in an effort to prevent it from taking off. According to the Associated Press, a Brazilian federal police spokesman indicates that the pilot and four others were arrested, but nobody was hurt in the takedown. The video does appear to show plenty of contraband electronics that were seized from the alleged smugglers, however. |
