SD Association aims to provide authentication services with standardized smart-chip technology

The SD Association has already embraced some authentication measures to provide things like secure ebooks, but it’s now looking to go the extra mile with a little help from GlobalPlatform. The two have announced today that they’re collaborating on a standardized smart-chip technology for SD and microSD cards, which they hope will let the memory cards be used for everything from mobile payments and personal ID — including near-field communication — to things like mobile television subscriptions and other customized services. Of course, that’s all still in the earliest stages, and there’s no indication of a timeline for any of it just yet.

Silverlight will reach end-of-life at version 5

Silverlight will reach end-of-life at version 5

Could Microsoft’s Silverlight soon be following in the footsteps of Adobe’s Flash Player for mobile devices? That’s still unconfirmed by Microsoft, but ZDNet’s Mary-Jo Foley is reporting that she’s heard from several sources who say that Silverlight 5 will be the last version of the rich media platform, and that it’s not clear how long it will be supported after it’s released later this month. What’s more, another source tells Foley that the final version of Silverlight 5 itself might only work with Internet Explorer on Windows, as opposed to earlier versions that have also supported Chrome and Safari on both OS X and Windows. As ZDNet notes, however, the end of Silverlight wouldn’t necessarily mean an end to all of the work Microsoft has done on Silverlight — we’ve already heard about a Silverlight-like app framework that’s coming in a future Xbox update, and many of the same principles can also be found in the Metro-style apps for Windows 8.

Sony Ericsson's Xperia Acro and Xperia Arc get PlayStation Certified in Japan

Hello, PlayStation Certification! Looks like the Xperia Play is getting a bit of company in Japan, where Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Arc and Acro are getting that coveted seal of approval. Updates are actually rolling out across a number of SE phones on NTT DoCoMo, enabling dozens upon dozens of new games to be tailored (and available) for the Arc and Acro in particular. Hit the source link for the official word, and if you aren’t camped out in the Land of the Rising Sun, hang tight — we get the feeling Sony proper is going to be pushing this initiative a lot harder than it has been thus far.

iOS 5's panorama enabled with backup hackery, jailbreak not required

Did you want in on iOS 5′s hidden panorama feature, but weren’t down with the whole jailbreak shindig? You’re in luck, because RedmondPie found a roundabout solution. All interested parties need is an iTunes backup, a little elbow grease and a program called iBackupBot. That last item will allow you to bust open your device backup, where you’ll find a preference file that needs an “EnableFirebreak” value changed from “false” to “true.” Once that’s done, a quick restore is all that stands between you and some epic panoramic vistas, bro. A full step-by-step guide awaits you at the source, just triple check that backup’s recent before you obliterate and restore, okay?

Nokia Maps and Nokia Drive hacked, delivered to all Windows Phones thanks to XDA devs

Nokia’s exclusive Windows Phone 7 apps simply refuse to stay, well, exclusive. Now, Nokia Maps will officially be ported to non-Finish-manufactured Microsoft handsets, but when exactly it might land in the Marketplace is anyone’s guess. If you’ve jailbroken your WP7 device, then there’s no need to wait any longer. Simply head on over the XDA forums (at the source link) and sideload it. While you’re there, you might as well grab Drive too — after all, what good is a map app without voice-guided navigation.

Adobe confirms Flash Player is dead for mobile devices

Adobe confirms Flash Player is dead for mobile devices

Some people are hoping for it, while others are expecting it in one way or another, and now here’s the confirmation: Flash Player for mobile devices is officially dead. Adobe is reaffirming its commitment to “aggressively contribute” to HTML5, a platform with broader support and capabilities than Flash was ever able to deliver. Adobe will of course also be pushing developers to work in its AIR platform for a more native experience, and the company will continue to work on Flash Player for desktop operating systems, but one can’t help but see the platform as a whole standing on fairly shaky footing at this point. I guess it’s a good thing to let Flash go and let WebM and HTML5 take its place.
