LogMeIn remote desktop app goes free on iPhone and iPad

LogMeIn remote desktop app goes free on iPhone and iPad

Looks like LogMeIn Inc. has suddenly cottoned on to the freemium business model, deciding to offer its basic remote desktop app for iPhone and iPad entirely gratis. Previously, you had to hand over $29.99 for the simple pleasure of accessing your PC and Mac desktops via LogMeIn Ignition, but the new free version (simply ‘LogMeIn’) amply provides for that barebones service, while bells and whistles are reserved for those who buy an in-app subscription to LogMeIn Pro at $40 per year — including things like HD video and sound streaming, file transferring and integration with cloud storage services . Confusing matters slightly, the old Ignition app won’t die. It’ll live on in the App Store with a massively inflated price to support old Ignition customers and — most importantly — give them grandfather rights to Pro features, so they don’t feel left out and start sniffing around the competition. There’s a full PR after the break, and it also mentions that Android update is on its way in 2012.

T-Platforms to build ten petaflop supercomputer for Moscow State University

T-Platforms to build ten petaflop supercomputer for Moscow State University

In post-Soviet Russia, massive supercomputer programs you. Recently, Russia’s Moscow State University contracted with high-performance computing company T-Platforms to create a ten petaflop cluster that’ll be operational in 2013. The computer would fall just short of the fastest supercomputer on Earth (the Japanese K Computer, which is rated 140% at 10.51 petaflops) and will incorporate a mixture of different node types to achieve the ten petaflops. T-Platforms will reportedly build the nodes from Sandy Bridge or Ivy Bridge Xeon processors and NVIDIA’s next-generation Kepler GPU coprocessors, and Intel’s Many Integrated Core (MIC) architecture could also be included if it’s available during construction. The reason for the project? Unknown officially, but we’re guessing it’s just another reason for Putin to rip his shirt off and celebrate.

RockMelt hits beta 5, makes Chome's Omnibox a gateway to Facebook

Last year, when RockMelt picked up where Flock left off, deeply tying social services into the browser interface, we were understandably a bit skeptical. But, just over 13 months later the tricked out Chrome variant is still kicking and tacking on new features. The latest beta, version five, turns the Omnibox into a full-fledged Facebook portal, allowing you to upload photos, initiate chats and load profiles without first having to launch the site. The update also sports a spruced up new tab page. We won’t spoil all the surprises though, hit up the source link to download it for yourself.

LG unveils new 3D glasses, hopes lighter and better looking spectacles drive adoption

LG unveils new 3D glasses, hopes lighter and better looking spectacles drive adoption

LG’s FPR 3DTVs already featured lighter, cheaper passive 3D glasses than their active shutter competition, but next year the company will push its advantage even further with these new models. The three options available include the F310 (at right, above) which it says weighs 20 percent less than last year’s default and are curved more for a better fit, the F320 (left) clip-on design for glasses-wearers and Alain Mikli-designed (the guy who made Kanye’s shutter shades, among other high-end eyeglasses) F360 half-rim frames (middle). It also rolled out a press release trumpeting new Smart TV features for 2012, but beyond the updated remote and confirmation of Intel WiDi integration, it’s pretty short on details. We’re not seeing any Google TV tie-ins here, LG is focusing on its homegrown ecosystem which it says now offers 1,200 apps. There’s no word on pricing for the glasses, but after this and announcing a 55-inch OLED prototype, I’m sure we’ll see more stuff from the South Korean giant.

Spire installer brings Siri to any jailbroken iOS 5 device, legally — proxy still required

Spire installer brings Siri to any jailbroken iOS 5 device, legally -- proxy still required

A few months of work by iOS hackers Grant Paul (aka chpwn), Steven Troughton-Smith and Ryan Petrich has culminated in the release of Spire, a new installer that will easily set up Siri on your jailbroken iOS 5 device. While Apple has kept its little helper exclusively constrained to the iPhone 4S, it now runs on iPads, iPhone 4, iPod touches and the iPhone 3GS, and while that’s been done before they claim the other new trick is that it’s legal, avoiding the copyright infringement inherent in previous hacks. When installed it will initiate a 100MB download of Siri directly from Apple so watch your bandwidth limits, and also be prepared to set up your own proxy server with donated info from an iPhone 4S to hold the line between Apple’s backend and yourself. It’s available on Cydia now so if you’ve been waiting for a way to get this feature for yourself it’s not far away, however Troughton-Smith tells 9to5 Mac that the next major step may not come until the iPhone 4S is jailbroken and they can avoid the proxy server issues altogether.

Apple’s Newsstand application aiding digital magazine sales

Apple's Newsstand application aiding digital magazine sales

There’s no doubt that the digital magazine’s road to success has been a bumpy one. The original — and still the main — idea was to push content creators and publishers forward in the paperless era, but there’s been many doubters and fallen soldiers in the process. While Apple hasn’t been the only outfit looking to bring the magazine to the small screen, the introduction of the Newsstand app in iOS 5 aimed to give digitized publications a place to shine on their own. According to AllThingsD, the shelf isn’t just a real estate hog on your springboard, it’s actually helping to boost sales; Popular Science alone has seen an uptick in subscriptions on the order of 11,000 since the app launched, and signs of slowdown are nowhere to be spotted. PopSci’s results may not be found in every publishing house, but it’s as solid a sign as any that the tactic may be working. Hit the source link for that chart action.
