Insanely detailed book sculptures

Among other things, Guy Laramee makes sculptures from books. They are amazing; from the level of detail and the textures to the way he presents them. Some of them have a magical aura, like this one, titled Book People. Go to Laramee’s site to get a complete view of his work.

Support for SOPA gets GoDaddy in hot water

A Reddit poster aggressively responded to GoDaddy’s decision and announced that he will be moving 51 domains to show his objection and suggested that to readers that other GoDaddy customers should be moving their domains on December 29 as well.

There aren’t many companies supporting SOPA and even anti-piracy organizations such as the Business Software Alliance (BSA) said that the bill needs work and would not be supported by the organizations. However, GoDaddy filed a strong statement in favor of SOPA with the U.S. House of Representatives. In the filing, the company writes:

“Go Daddy has a long history of supporting federal legislation directed toward combating illegal conduct on the Internet. […] Go Daddy has always supported both government and private industry efforts to identify and disable all types of illegal activity on the Internet. […] It is for these reasons that I’m still struggling with why some Internet companies oppose PROTECT IP and SOPA. There is no question that we need these added tools to counteract illegal foreign sites that are falling outside the jurisdiction of U.S. law enforcement. And there is clearly more that we could all be doing to adequately address the problems that exist. […] We need to find a way to preserve American ingenuity. Starting from a place of common ground will allow us to have the conversation about how best to achieve those goals. SOPA is a needed tool to get the ball moving.”

It is unclear how much of an impact the move-your-domain proposal will be for GoDaddy. The company claims that it has more than 50 million domains registered. The post on Reddit had generated more than 2000 comments at the time of this writing, the majority of them being positive toward the post. GoDaddy itself declined to comment on the outrage and sent us the SOPA filing as a response for our request for a statement. The company also remained firm within its own forums and posted “GoDaddy’s position on SOPA“.

Back to the Future DeLorean USB Flash Drive doesn’t need a flux capacitor

Fellow Back to the Future freaks, rejoice for there’s now a USB flash drive that is also a a modified DeLorean, just like the one in the movie. $25 buys you 4 Gbytes.

Extra 80s bonus: there’s also the A-Team van flash drive for just $23. I pity the foo who doesn’t get one.

Lamborghini Aventador runs all the way up to 230 mph

Lamborghini Aventador runs all the way up to 230 mph

You ever get the feeling that automakers are understating the performance capabilities of their cars? Some do, and some don’t. But it appears that Lamborghini has undershot the v-max on its latest mid-engine V12 supercar, the Aventador LP700-4.

Although Sant’Agata says the Aventador should be capable of topping out at 350 km/h (217 mph), the folks over at Sport Auto, as you can see from the video after the jump, took one all the way up to 370 km/h – that’s 230 mph.

As super a car as the Aventador is, those are the kinds of speeds typically recorded by another class of supercar altogether: cars like the McLaren F1 (231 mph), Koenigsegg CCR (241 mph) or Bugatti Veyron (254 mph)… but without the million-dollar price tag that typically goes along with those kinds of bragging rights.

Volkswagen shuts down after-hours BlackBerry e-mail servers, allows employees to have lives again

Volkswagen shuts down after-hours BlackBerry e-mail servers, allows employees to have lives again

BlackBerrys are still the de facto standard in the work force and represent a sort of leash an employer has on an employee. If you see that indicator light blink, you better get to work. The problem with that is that no employee ever stops thinking about work! VW wants to change that. They’re turning off employee BlackBerrys after work.

It’s an impressive and progressive idea that’s sure to improve the quality of life of their employees. According to the Financial Times, VW’s e-mail server will stop sending messages to an employee’s BlackBerry 30 minutes after their shift is over and only start up again 30 minutes before their shift starts. That way, VW employees can really get away from their work and not feel weighed down by after hour messages. Live life! No stress! Save time for yourself.

Plus, the employees are probably thinking any reason to use a BlackBerry less is a good reason in itself.

The Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab are not getting Ice Cream Sandwich

The Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab are not getting Ice Cream Sandwich

Earlier this week, Samsung named the devices that were due to get Ice Cream Sandwich in early 2012. They’ve now confirmed that the Galaxy S and 7-inch Galaxy Tab definitely aren’t in line for the update.

According to Samsung’s announcement, the phone and tablet lack sufficient RAM and ROM to run the new OS alongside TouchWiz and other “experience-enhancing” software.

Disappointing news for 10 million Galaxy S users out there — especially if you stop and think about the fact that the processor and memory specs of the Galaxy S are pretty much the same as the ICS-toting Nexus S.

Samsung skirts that issue by pointing to the fact that the Galaxy S has to run TouchWiz, carrier services, video calling software, and, in some markets, mobile TV. By comparison, the Nexus S just runs the Android OS alone. Sorry, Galaxy S users: you’re out of luck.
