Watch a Koenigsegg Agera R make a Ferrari 458 Italia look slow

December 14th, 2011

Everyone knows there is nothing slow about the Ferrari 458 Italia. Of course, that doesn’t mean the completely insane 2932 pound 1115 horsepower Koenigsegg Agera R doesn’t have the power to make the 458 look a lot slower than it actually is.

Pirated Serious Sam 3 comes with immortal enemy to annoy pirates

Piracy is a major problem in video games world and the industry has tried so many ways to curb this activity. The most common method is through CD keys or DRM which unfortunately, got hacked too easily and quite a hassle for many of legit users. Some of the developers approached it in a different way though like Croteam who actually put their damn anti-piracy mechanism right into pirated version of Serious Sam 3 by making one of the enemies immortal.

This insane giant mothership will launch rockets into orbit

December 14th, 2011

This is not a fantasy project. This is going to be real: a gigantic 385-foot wing span, 544-tonne plane powered by six 747 engines that will serve as a flying launch platform for 490,000 pound orbital rockets. It’s the new project of Paul Allen and Burt Rutan. And it looks insanely amazing.

The new design works similarly to Rutan’s previous designs. The giant mothership, which brings memories of the giganormous Howard Hughes’ H-4 Hercules “Spruce Goose”, will take SpaceX rocket launchers up to the stratosphere. From there, the mother ship will drop the rocket, which will fire up into orbit. The rocket will be able to deliver a total of 13,500 pounds of cargo up to orbit, including manned spaceships.

Google Street View documents Japan tsunami devastation

The online news cycle moves at a blistering pace. It’s easy to forget that, while the story of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami that occurred last March may move from the front page, individuals are still struggling to cope with the widespread devastation on the island.

Google took it upon itself to document the structural destruction in some of the hardest hit areas in its Google Maps Street View function. The tech giant covered more than 27,000 miles to provide a 360-degree imagery archive of the communities that are still reeling from the natural disasters nine months later.

Google has even started a new web site to allow viewers to compare before and after images of specific areas. The Build The Memory site is a stark reminder that, while the world marches on, there’s plenty of recovery left in Japan. Head over to the site for a closer look.

Toyota Supra rumors continue with 400-hp hybrid power

Toyota Supra rumors continue with 400-hp hybrid power

Have we told you how badly we want a reboot of the Toyota Supra (and the Honda NSX)? One of the iconic cars of Gen X youth, the Supra died an untimely death in the mid-1990s along with the rest of the Japanese sports car market. This was, of course, long before most of us had managed to graduate from college and get decent enough jobs to be able to afford anything more exciting than a used Honda Civic.

So yes, we hang on every word out of Japan, and the latest comes via Motor Trend. It’s reporting that a hybrid, 400-horsepower, 3.5-liter V6 powertrain is being tested for possible release in 2015. The new Supra would look a lot like the FT-HS concept that Toyota showed at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show, according to the magazine, which also says that if we really want to see this Supra successor, we’d better hope the Toyota GT 86/Scion FR-S does well.

In another episode of ‘How Dump Can You Get’, someone found good use of bad music

December 14th, 2011

There are plenty of automotive phenomena we don’t entirely understand. Take sound system competitions, for example. We just never saw the practical use for a stereo worth more than your vehicle, especially when the largest fraction of that investment gets channeled into bowel-wobbling subwoofers. That is, until now. The owner of this particular Pontiac Grand Prix has found a unique way to shed snow from his car in the winter. Instead of standing in the cold with a brush and scraper, he simply cranks the volume on his Rockford Fosgate P3 subwoofers and lets physics take over.

Thanks to a little pounding bass, the vehicle’s windows are clear of snow in no time flat. Of course, the gentleman’s neighbors might have a word or two to say about his turning the community’s winter wonderland into a pounding dance floor. Hit the jump to check out the clip for yourself, just be sure to nix the volume.

UK Parliament comes down on BBC over Jeremy Clarkson

UK Parliament comes down on BBC over Jeremy Clarkson

Mark Thompson, director general of the BBC, has been forced to go to bat for Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson after the television host jokingly suggested striking public sector workers should be shot in front of their own families. Yep. That sounds like Clarkson to us.

According to the UK’s Guardian and Telegraph dailies, members of the UK Parliament then began calling for the government-owned BBC to oust Jezza, with Labor Party member Jim Sheridan asking whether or not Clarkson was a luxury the BBC couldn’t afford. Around 32,000 people sent complaints to the network about the host’s disparaging remarks, but Thompson countered, suggesting that Clarkson is one of the UK’s chief cultural exports at the moment.

The BBC executive also said far more people would be upset to see the gregarious host disappear from Top Gear than had complained about his flippant remarks.

This is just the latest episode in a long line of Clarkson’s skirmishes with various nationalities, religions and organizations, but it doesn’t look like the British personality is going anywhere any time soon.
