Samsung’s new 11.6-incher to beat Apple at the display game?

Samsung's new 11.6-incher to beat Apple at the display game?

Samsung is looking to expand their “something for everyone” approach to tablets by working on a 11.6inch tablet with a 2560×1600 display which by the numbers will put the Apple iPad 2′s (and even perhaps the next generation iPad) to shame. Reportedly, the 11.6incher will run Ice Cream Sandwich with a 2GHz dual-core Exynos 5250 CPU and will be unveiled at MWC in February 2012.

While the next generation Apple A6 processor is rumoured to be very similar to the one Samsung is using in their tablet, the display is where Samsung plans to leave Apple in the dust. As far as rumours go, the iPad 3 will have a 2048 x 1536 display, meaning that Samsung would have a higher pixel density (depending on size of the iPad 3 of course).

If this is to be believed, Apple will not be able to lay claims to have the most advanced display in the market. So will Samsung really take over in that regard? Will a higher resolution display REALLY convince you to drop your iPad for a Samsung 11 incher?

Untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.0 now available, showcased on YouTube

Love to jailbreak but hate to tether every time you reboot? Then help could soon be at hand courtesy of hacker Pod2g. He just put out a video showing off a new exploit that continues to work on an iPod Touch even after it has been switched off and on. We don’t know when it’ll be released to the masses, or how long it’ll last once Apple catches wind, but in the meantime there are of course various alternatives if you can stomach the risks and don’t mind a bit of USB tomfoolery. AMD updates A-Series APUs, gives laptop Llanos modest spec bumps

AMD released its A-Series APUs almost six months ago, and since then it’s seen Intel update the A-Series’ Sandy Bridge counterparts. So, it’s about time for the Llano laptop lineup to do the same, and the refresh has come in the form of seven spiffy new APUs. At the high end, there’s the quad-core A8-3550MX clocked at 2.0 GHz with Radeon HD 6620G graphics to supplant the older A8-3530MX chip. On the low end, the 1.9GHz dual core A4-3305M with Radeon HD 6480G graphics joins AMD’s A4-3300M. It’s a minor update all around, with most models seeing a 100MHz boost in turbo frequency over existing A-Series APUs.

Pioneer MIXTRAX embeds mediocre DJ in your car stereo

Pioneer MIXTRAX embeds mediocre DJ in your car stereo

Pioneer is set to introduce a new functionality to a few of its stereos – including the much-hyped AppRadio – that mixes the songs on your iPhone, iPod or USB drive on the fly.

By measuring beats per minute and other data, MIXTRAX can supposedly beat-match and add effects and transitions into songs to create a seamless mix, all while animating the cover art to match the tempo. If you want to leave the mixing to yourself, Pioneer plans to offer a PC version of the mixing software that lets you save mixes to a USB drive or SD card, along with an iPhone app that lets you interact with the software and port your club masterpieces directly into your AppRadio.

MIXTRAX will be available this January on the aforementioned AppRadio and DEH-P7400HD, DEH-P8400BH and AVH-P8400BH AV receivers. You can get a taste of the system in action in the cheesetastic videos after the break. Read more…

Judge to reconsider DoJ’s AT&T antitrust suit

Judge to reconsider DoJ's AT&T antitrust suit

Late last month AT&T withdrew its application with the FCC to acquire T-Mobile, in an attempt, it said, to focus on winning approval from the Department of Justice, first. Now a district court judge is considering dismissing the US’ antitrust suit against ole Ma Bell. According to Bloomberg, the DoJ is looking to either “withdraw without prejudice” or “stay” the suit, as a result of AT&T pulling its application from the FCC. Judge Ellen Segal Huvelle scheduled a hearing for December 15th to decide whether the deal is still possible in the proposed timeframe and the suit still worth pursuing. She had this to say:

We don’t have any confidence that we are spending all this time and effort and the taxpayers money and that we’re not being spun. The landscape has changed.

AT&T’s lawyers remained steadfast, however, demanding the company’s “day in court,” and reiterating that approval from the DoJ would improve its chances of getting the thumbs-up from the FCC. For more sordid details on this legal ping-pong match, hit the source link below.

AMD Radeon HD 6000 cards receive VESA DisplayPort 1.2 certification, merit badges

When the certifications come in, you wipe a tear from your eye and ponder how proud you are. On Thursday, the Video Electronics Standards Association announced that AMD’s Radeon HD 6000 series graphics cards, including the high-end Radeon HD 6990, are the first to receive DisplayPort Version 1.2 certification. That means the cards are rated to support DisplayPort’s 5.4Gbps HBR2 data link speed and also feature increased display resolution, color depths and refresh rates, plus improved support for Full HD 3D stereoscopic displays. For the multiple monitor die-hards, there’s also better support for multiple monitors connected to a single DisplayPort receptacle to make your lives easier. Ah, it’s good to see a capable card series grow up a bit / become a man.
