Toshiba’s developed a camera that will take the guesswork out of finding radiation hotspots. Since the deadly particles / waves gather together in clumps, cleanup crews have to hunt around blind using geiger counters. The “Portable Gamma Camera” overlays data from a radiation sensor onto a live picture — areas shaded with red pixels have high radiation, yellow and green is medium and blue is low. Simply point it where you think the trouble is and it’ll show you exactly where to avoid. A prototype was used during the initial stages of the Fukushima cleanup and this model’s around half the size and it can even run on batteries — giving you three hours of lifesaving radiation detection.

We’ve seen plenty of sci-fi movies where the actors pressed a button, and a projection keyboard appears in front of them, and they just type away as if there’s a real keyboard. Looks cool right? Well, have you ever thought that such advance technology may actually surface in this age? Actually, this cool technology has already arrived, thanks to Celluon Magic Cube Laser Projection Keyboard and Touch Pad. Yes, real projection that projects out a virtual keyboard and touchpad which actually works! Read more…

These few years mobile gaming has been invaded by touch screen games that swarm Apple’s iOS platform, and we’re getting plenty of racing games and RPG games on this ‘fastest growing mobile platform’. However, sometimes it just feels awkward to smudge your iPad or iPhone’s screen playing these games, as the feeling just isn’t right, unlike playing with your old school PlayStation controller. Swinging your iPhone from left to right when playing racing games is still acceptable, but sometimes it just feels uncomfortable playing more intense action games by using multitouch. Well, fear not, as we have a solution for you, which is the latest AP Station controller.

If we had to imagine our dream DIY project chances are it would involve Arduino, Twitter and, of course, cats. How we’d combine those things we’re not sure, but we’ll admit to being big fans of Samuel Cox’s eSleeper, which turns a hollowed-out eMac into a bed for his feline. Inside the shell is an Arduino Ethernet connected to an IR sensor, some LEDs and a sound shield. When the cat breaks the infrared beam it triggers the iconic Mac chime and turns on a series color-shifting LEDs for a little mood lighting. From there the clock starts ticking. When little Fluffy (Captain Whiskers? Matlock? Penny? Greg?) decides she’s had enough napping and leaves the white plastic cocoon, tripping the IR sensor again, a random phrase is tweeted, along with the length of the cat’s siesta. Check out the video after the break to see the eSleeper in all its adorable DIY glory.

It’s arrived for too late for those who’ve already endured the agony of orthodontics, but a new daily treatment using a vibrating mouthpiece could halve the amount of time dental braces need to be worn.
Those metal straps work by applying pressure to the teeth, gradually reshaping the underlying bones so that everything comes into alignment—improving both aesthetics and functionality. But it’s a passive approach to the treatment that usually requires the uncomfortable braces to be worn for at least a year. So OrthoAccel Technologies has developed an accompanying treatment which has been shown to dramatically accelerate orthodontic treatments through the use of vibrations.
The AcceleDent—which was recently approved by the FDA and should be available in the US by the end of January—looks like a mouthguard but with a vibrating apparatus hanging off the end. When used for twenty minutes each day it’s been found to increase tooth movement up to 106 percent in the initial phase of braces treatment, and up to 38 to 50 percent as the teeth get closer to their proper alignment.
Unfortunately the amount of time you use the AcceleDent doesn’t directly correlate to how sooner you can get your braces off. It’s been found to be most effective with the recommended twenty minute per day treatment, while prolonged use can actually hinder its effectiveness. So cranking it to eleven and sleeping with it strapped to your face will actually do more harm than good.

Not too long ago, Dyson surprised us all with its striking bladeless fan. Now, the company is moving into the space heater market and has introduced an impressive but pricey one based on the same principal as the Air Multiplier fan.
Those of us not blessed with grace, poise, balance or hand-eye coordination are all too familiar with the bumps, scrapes and burns that come with being so damned clumsy. However, a brand new space heater from Dyson could mean less burns for those of us that find staying upright and keeping our hands away from scalding hot objects difficult.
