Google Screenwise panel will pay you to track your every move online, just as planned!

February 9th, 2012

Don’t mind letting Google watch your every click while browsing the web? Awesome, because the folks in Mountain View want to pay you for letting them do just that. The company is recruiting panelists for a project it’s calling Screenwise, a program that will give the internet behemoth more insight into how the general public uses the interwebs day in and day out. Once you opt in, you’ll receive a $5 gift card code to Amazon and for up to a year, you’ll get additional spending money every three months. But how will The Goog track your mouse clicks? Just before getting paid, you’ll have to download a browser extension that will keep an eye on things and send your data back to the mothership.

“Like many other web and media companies, we do panel research to help better serve our users by learning more about people’s media use, on the web and elsewhere. This panel is one such small project that started near the beginning of the year. Of course, this is completely optional to join. People can choose to participate if it’s of interest (or if the gift appeals) and everyone who does participate has complete transparency and control over what Internet use is being included in the panel. People can stay on the panel as long as they’d like, or leave at any time.”

If you’re looking to make a little more dough, Ars Technica reports that you’ll be able to opt for a more lucrative hardware monitoring option. Here, you’ll have to install the Screenwise Data Collector (pictured above) on your home network; however, the pay-out is an initial Benjamin and $20 for every month you participate. Sound like something you’d want in on? Hit the source link below to be notified when registration opens.

No posh press conference at MWC 2012, so what ‘minor’ products will Samsung reveal instead?

Traditionally, Samsung love to hold huge and posh press conference at Mobile World Congress (MWC). Hence, that is why many expects the Korean electronics giant to launch their new Galaxy S III at the event although in the end, the launch will actually take place at a separate event sometime later this year. Now, it turns out that not only Galaxy S III will be missing from MWC but the big press conference itself.

That being said, Samsung is still going to be there at Barcelona and they have said previously that they are still going to reveal couple of new products during MWC. So in essence, one of the remaining questions that left now is what are the devices that the company will actually bring to MWC. Well, the answer shall be revealed in just few more weeks’ time.

Vonage Mobile app allows free calls and texts worldwide to fellow Android and iOS users

Looking to save some coin on those international calls to your mates in Brussels? Vonage has just rolled out new Android and iOS apps that do just that. The Vonage Mobile app offers free talk and text for corresponding with fellow app users worldwide by way of WiFi or data connection. Need to update app-less Auntie Em while backpacking through the Swiss Alps? The outfit says it’ll save you 70% over major carriers and costs 30% less than Skype. For calls to folks without the app, users can add calling credit in either $4.99 or $9.99 increments right from the iTunes store or Android Market. The software also makes use of your existing number and extensive list of contacts without the need to create another username. Right now, calls to any phone in the United States, Canada, or Puerto Rico are free from the app for a limited time — so long as you stay under 3000 minutes per month, of course. Hit the source link for more information before heading to your app repository to snag the free download.

$60 Aakash Tablet to cost no-cash?

Kapil Sibal’s not resting after the explosion of interest that followed the initial launch of the $60 Aakash education tablet. He’s now pushing to get the rebadged DataWind Ubislate 7 into the hands of students free of charge, rather than the $35 they currently pay. The plan is to offer a 50 percent government subsidy for each unit, with education institutions fronting the other half, but only if inclined to do so. He’s also pushing for the tablet to be manufactured domestically rather than imported — hoping that the comforts of home will enable it to spread nationwide.

Google Fiber rollout now ready to begin in both Kansas Cities

Google Fiber rollout now ready to begin in both Kansas Cities

It reportedly suffered a slight delay due to some disagreement with local officials over just how its thousands of miles of wires would be hung, but Google announced today that it’s finally ready to begin the rollout of its Google Fiber network in Kansas City, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri. Expectedly, that effort will initially focus on the network’s backbone, after which Google will then turn its attention towards connecting homes and businesses in the two cities to the gigabit network (promising speeds 100 times faster than the average high-speed connection). Unfortunately, there’s still no firm word as to when the first customers can expect that to happen.

Google Chrome browser finally officially lands on Android

The latest step in bringing Google-based unification has arrived. The Chrome browser is here on Android. This beta version is currently only available for that elite crowd of ICS phones and tablets and like its desktop progenitor, the synced settings and bookmarks are all in tow. Expect to see a new, more natural mobile view of the tab system. It’ll also remember what you were last looking at on your desktop Chrome browser, and sync it across to your mobile device — it’s like Kindle or iBook’s bookmarking system, but for the web. Your autocorrect content from the desktop is similarly synced. Expect to see the reappearance of link previews, something you may recall from the results of any Google searches, offering a brief thumbnail of a link’s destination. We’re giving it a good play-around right now, but while we get our first impression up, check the quick intro video after the break.

Google Voice update for Android brings design refresh and asynchronous SMS

Google Voice update for Android brings design refresh and asynchronous SMS

A new version of Google Voice has just crawled out of the woodwork, and while the changes are minor, we think most users will like what’s in store. First and foremost, we were greeted with a new, darker interface that better matches Honeycomb’s design philosophy, along with a refreshed icon that more closely resembles the messaging app in Ice Cream Sandwich. There’s also a curious new feature known as asynchronous SMS, which allows you to queue up messages for later delivery when you happen to be without signal. To test this out, we put our handset into airplane mode, fired off a few texts — which showed up as queued — and then took our phone back onto the network. Once back online, the messages were delivered as expected. And hey, it can’t get much better than that, really.

Dropbox offers up to 5GB of free space to anyone willing to go beta

Here’s some good news for all you Dropboxers out there: the company is offering a bundle of free storage space to anyone who tries the beta version of its new Experimental software. It’s really quite simple: just download the test program, upload a photo, and instantly get 500MB of free storage. Upload another photo or video, and an additional 500MB will magically appear at your doorstep. The idea is to test out the beta software’s new photo and video uploader, which automatically pulls media from any camera, smartphone or SD card and drops it in the cloud. Free space is limited to 5GB per user, and there’s an inherent risk to testing any unfinished product, but those willing to make the leap can find all the requisite materials and information at the source link, below.

CMDA version Galaxy Nexus and other CDMA devices removed from Google Support pages

Galaxy Nexus and other CDMA devices removed from Google Support pages

Some of you may have noticed that the Verizon version of the Galaxy Nexus is no longer listed as a supported, official developer device by Google. Despite rumors to the contrary, it doesn’t appear this has anything to do with the kerfuffle over Wallet, but instead centers around technical issues relating to the APK files required for CDMA connectivity and the signing of those libraries.

Other devices have also disappeared from the support pages, including the Nexus S 4G and the Verizon-branded Xoom. Google has posted an update explaining that, “for various technical reasons” CDMA telephony is handled by binaries provided by the carrier in newer devices. The result is different signatures being associated with those APKs than a pure AOSP builds and, thus, those essential components don’t function properly.

Google explained the disappearance by saying “we aim to make sure that we are as clear as possible about the degree of support that devices have,” before going on to promise all Nexus devices would continue to have unlockable bootloaders and that as many of the closed-source binaries as possible would be made available. For the complete statement hit up the source link.

Galaxy S III launch date in May, is 7mm thick?

Galaxy S III launch date in May, is 7mm thick?

Korea’s ETNews is betting its reputation upon this raft of rumored details concerning Samsung’s Galaxy S III. Since the only thing we’ve known for certain at the moment is that it’ll be announced “After MWC,” let’s take all of these tidbits with a strong pot of “We’ll believe it when we see it,” okay?

According to the report, the handset’s going to be 7mm thick, helped by the company shrinking down its PCB, connector and chip sizes by between 10 and 20 percent. The only thing that hasn’t lost any weight is the camera, which may sit on a “protrusion”. It’ll be running a custom quad-core processor with HDMI and LTE baked-in, and rather obviously it’ll be running Ice Cream Sandwich.

Here’s where things get a little confusing, either this is the first of a raft of models that will highlight different features (so we’ll see subsequent GS3s with an S-Pen, 3D display or souped-up camera) or the above perks will come with the flagship as standard. Parts are reportedly gearing up to be shipped, but the only time we’ll get confirmation is when that special event kicks off closer to the summer.
