Have you ever received a call from disturbing anonymous numbers? Just a little story here: I had a couple incoming calls last year, they are asking me about electronics kinda things, they said that they wanted to do some market research things like that. These people will ask you ask me some simple questions like “If you are getting a digital camera, where do you purchase it? from the local store or online” and after that they will call you back in two days time to tell you that they have this lucky draw contest or some event going on, they will put your phone number to the lucky draw no matter what (even if you rejected it) and after another few days, wow, Mr. Lucky you’ve won $25000 from the lucky draw you entered the other day. They will start asking for you full name, ID number and bank account numbers. I almost gave them but luckily a friend beside told me that it was a scam from some telemarketing company. After another two months they call again but sounds like a different group who doing the same thing again. Well, of course I rejected their calls this time.

I did some research on this because I was wondering how they got people’s numbers and names, one possibility is from the free phone lookup directories like the Yellow Pages, White Pages, etc. Or the other way to get your details is maybe from things (contests, promos, products registration etc) that you have registered to and even your bills especially the phone bills (it’s better to shred them off instead of throwing them outside your house dustbin).

Another thing that I’ve just learn about is the Reverse Number Lookup, a service that allows users to search by a telephone service number in order to retrieve the customer details for that service, some of them may requires some fees to do so. You can actually use this service to find out the strange numbers. Here’s a few ways to keep the privacy of your phone.

1. Always keep your bills properly and shred them into pieces if you don’t need them.
2. Switch your phone to private calling. (your number will not be displayed if you call to people)
3. Try to get another number if you often register things or contest (I got a prepaid for that ).
4. Try excluding yourself from those phone directories.
5. Avoid talking too much to strange call (some of them just try to get more of your info, like the contest I’ve mentioned above, they even try get your bank account numbers). Just tell them that you are busy and you are not interested will do.

I think these few tips might help a little.

Again, this way of lighting a grill is INCREDIBLY dangerous! Powerful explosions can result if you do it wrong! Don’t try this unless you have already had experience handling liquid oxygen!

Okay now, watch the video after the break.
