Rumor: Apple Working on iPad 'HD' With Retina

Apple’s made a pretty big deal about its Retina Display for the iPhone 4 when it launched a year ago, but its 300+ dpi (326 dpi on the iPhone 4, to be exact) technology has yet to hit anything else other than the corresponding iPod touch.

It was a little disappointing when the iPad 2 featured the same 1024×768 resolution as the original iPad, but now word is that Apple is prepping an iPad “HD” that will feature four times the resolution at 2048 x 1536.

This is My Next‘s source says that the iPad HD may launch this fall alongside a professional app such as Final Cut or Aperture. This iPad HD is not supposed to be the iPad 3, but rather a separate class, such as the MacBook Pro to the original MacBook.

Apple iOS 4.3.4 software update may fix iPhone hole, block PDF jailbreak

Apple iOS 4.3.4 software update may fix iPhone hole, block PDF jailbreak

Remember that PDF exploit from last year that JailbreakMe 2.0 was using to unlock your iPhone with just a few taps? Well, Apple patched it. And now it’s apparently back. According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple acknowledged the exploit, and is working on an update at this very moment.

In addition to the JailbreakMe 3.0 hack that came to light last week, the hole can also be used for some not-so-noble efforts, like grabbing your contacts database, accessing saved passwords, or activating your iPad or iPhone’s built-in camera. And nobody wants that. For one reason or another, German authorities have taken the lead on encouraging Apple to investigate, and have also warned all users to avoid opening PDF docs from untrusted sources.

Ironically, JailbreakMe includes a patch for the very hole that allows it to function in the first place, so if you’re terrified that rogue PDFs will take over your devices, that’s an option to consider in the meantime.

Unofficial Swype port makes its way to iOS, slides in via Jailbreak

Unofficial Swype port makes its way to iOS, slides in via Jailbreak

It seemed that JailbreakMe may bring more features than just “easiest way to jailbreak”. If you haven’t use JailbreakMe, Andrew Liu’s new Swype iOS port may pique your interest. Although the app is still in the earliest of stages — version 0.1.0, to be exact — we can confirm it works, but it did take us two downloads via a repo with Cydia and functionality proved limited.

We were able to swipe words in pre-loaded apps like Messaging, Mail and Search, but had no luck with Safari or others we’ve downloaded. Furthermore, Swype’s all-important blue trace-line is absent, and our words didn’t always come out as expected.

Liu stated on Twitter that the current release is still a beta and that he’ll be sprucing it up soon.

Apple to bring a new world to iFags with interactive augmented reality

Apple to bring a new world to iFags with interactive augmented reality

When we go somewhere new, we wish we could spend more time taking in the sights and less time looking at our phone for directions and info about our surroundings. Apple’s well aware of this conundrum, and has filed a couple of patent applications to let you ogle your environment while telling you where to go and what you’re seeing.

One app is a method for combining augmented reality (AR) information and real time video while allowing users to interact with the images on screen — so you can shoot a vid of a city skyline with your iPhone, touch a building where you want to go, and let it show you the way there.

The second patent application is for a device with an LCD display capable of creating a transparent window, where the opacity of the screen’s pixels is changed by varying the voltage levels driving them. Such a display could overlay interactive info about what you see through the window, so you can actually look at the Mona Lisa while reading up on her mysterious grin.

Of course, these are just patent applications, so we probably won’t be seeing any AR-optimized iDevices anytime soon, but well, Apple’s hard to predict at times… just look at that iPad.

iPad makes up one percent of global web browsing magically

iPad makes up one percent of global web browsing magically

This is surely the sort of thing Apple likes to see — it might not be the prettiest graph in the world, but it certainly drives home the fairly consistent growth of the iPad’s global web browsing share. Back in April of last year, we reported that the company’s “magical” tablet had nabbed 0.03 percent of global web traffic in its first week. Barely over a year after being introduced to this Apple-enthusiast world and the decimal point has moved a couple of places, according to NetMarketShare, with the device now making up more than one percent of worldwide web browsing. That number is even higher in the US, at 2.1 percent, with the iPhone and Android devices pulling in 2.9 and 2.6 percent, respectively. As for Apple’s share of tablet traffic — well, there’s not a heck of a lot to report on that front.

Cut n Paste on your iPad like a cowboy with Bing’s Lasso for iPad app

Cut n Paste on your iPad like a cowboy with Bing’s Lasso for iPad app

How’s hog-tying search terms sound as an alternative to plain old cut and paste? Well, according to Microsoft, it sounds mighty fine. The software giant just announced Lasso, a new touch-friendly search tool for the Bing iPad app that allows you to rope in your internet queries by circling a word or phrase. Once you’ve drawn the circle, Bing automatically generates a search using the selected words. I’m not sure how effective this is for fatty nerds with oily fingers thought.

Jailbreakme is back, supports iPad 2!

Jailbreakme is back, supports iPad 2!

Once upon a time, all it required to jailbreak your Apple device was to simply visit a webpage and hit the go button. Since then, the jailbreaking process has ranged between as simple as that to building a custom firmware package for a full software restore.

Now, thanks to the work of iPhone hacker comex, the JailbreakMe.com website is back and is able to jailbreak the following devices:

  • iPad1: 4.3 through 4.3.3
  • iPad2: 4.3.3
  • iPhone3GS: 4.3 through 4.3.3
  • iPhone4: 4.3 through 4.3.3
  • iPhone4-CDMA: 4.2.6 through 4.2.8
  • iPod touch 3g: 4.3, 4.3.2, 4.3.3
  • iPod touch 4g: 4.3 through 4.3.3

The exploit once again takes advantage of a PDF security vulnerability in order to inject the jailbreak code. Apple will no doubt patch this hole, perhaps even before the release of iOS 5.

iPad passes the 100,000 apps milestone, the rest of the tablets look on with jelly

iPad passes the 100,000 apps milestone, the rest of the tablets look on with jelly

It’s been over a year and slightly more after its initial launch and Apple’s iPad has established itself as both the progenitor and dominant entity in a new category of device that nobody cared at first: tablets.

A large part of its success has undeniably been down to the enthusiasm shown by developers, who have recently crossed the notable marker of producing 100,000 applications compatible with the device.

As is true of the vast app selection on the iPhone, quantity doesn’t guarantee quality, but the abundance of software available for the iPad at least offers a better chance of finding some wheat in amongst the chaff.

And as to its competitors, here’s hoping Ice Cream Sandwich and Windows 8 get here before this Apple juggernaut crosses the million marks, eh?

Jailbreak hack allows up to 3 apps on your iPad

Jailbreak hack allows up to 3 apps on your iPad

What’s worse than playing Angry Birds all day on your iPad? Playing two Angry Birds at the same time all day on your iPad! Yes, this is madness! Jailbreak dev Aaron Ash realised that it would be pretty awesome to be able to run 2 apps simultaneously on one screen (ala Window 8 Tablets) and came up with a tweak to bring it to his humble iPad. Apparently, the iPad could take up to 3 apps at the same time before crashing. Sadly though, the tweak is still in a proof-of-concept stage and is not anywhere close to being ready for its public debut. Once this comes out, I’m sure it will wreak havoc on the iPad’s (even iPad 2′s) battery life!

Fring optimizes its four-way video calling app for smiley iPad 2 owners

Good news for iPad 2 users. Well, not that your iPad 2 can be jailbreak, no it’s not, but at least developers are optimizing the apps. Ever tried Fring on your iPad 2, but saddled with an iPhone-sized interface on your 9.7-inch IPS screen. So, we’re very pleased to tell you that Fring has been updated with proper iPad support (cue cheers). Basically there’s no reason to use Facetime now, with its lame single-caller and WiFi only limitations. Hit up the source link if you’re in the group video chatting mood.
