Samsung and Sony Ericsson to ditch Symbian platform

Yes, Nokia’s latest N8 and E7 does use the Symbian^3 OS, but Nokia has said that they’re going to leave it for their low-end lineup budget phones, and their N-series phones will later ditch Symbian for MeeGo. Samsung has also ‘unofficially’ declared their departure from Symbian platform as they had emailed developers that they will close down their Symbian forum and stop support for Symbian phones. Sony Ericsson did not mention it officially too, but we all know what Aldo Liguori, their spokesperson means when he said “we have no plans for the time being to develop any new products to the Symbian Foundation standard or operating system.” Time to say “nananana, hey heyhey, good bye” to Symbian?

Nokia pairs N8 with world's largest cinema screen

Nokia pairs N8 with world's largest cinema screen

How do you show off to the whole world when you are about to launch a new smart phone? Apple does it by making fun of other phones. Well for Nokia, they do it by playing ‘Prince of Persia’ movie on the world’s biggest cinema screen, from their Nokia N8. The screen is at 1,428 square meters, which is barely bigger than the previous record holder of 1,338 square meters. Of course, the N8 wasn’t able to project the Prince of Persia movie all by itself, so Nokia took advantage of the phone’s HDMI output to connect four 140-kilogram XLM HD30 projectors — no doubt another first for a cellphone. Yes, Nokia N8 is great, but I don’t want to show my MP4 on the world’s biggest screen. I only want to watch it at home. Now, why Price of Persia?

Nokia old fags rejoice as N8 ships, clean your fingers first!

Nokia’s N8 is now shipping to those of you who pre-ordered. It may not be the device that’ll make you smash your beloved BlackBerry, iPhone, or Android phone but hopefully the gorgeous specs on paper should be enough to make some decent upsets, and that the significantly enhanced Symbian^3 OS should do some decent tricks to your ‘oh-so-dinosaur-age’ S60. Yes, don’t forget that amazing 12-Megapixel sensor with Carls Zeiss, and the HDMI out. Finally, a ‘somewhat decent’ touchscreen (cross fingers) smartphone from Nokia that you can fool around with your fingers. And not feel ashamed when the lady next to you takes out her iPhone 4. HTC Mozart shows off Windows Phone 7 swiftly

HTC Mozart shows off Windows Phone 7 swiftly

HTC Mozart is your Windows Phone 7 from the Taiwanese. This time, there’s a video showing it off how ‘cool’ Windows Phone 7 can be. Specs? 1GHz Qualcomm QSD 8250, 576MB of RAM, 1,300mAh Li-Pol battery, 3.7-inch WVGA Super LCD screen, and an 8 megapixel camera with Xenon flash around the back. Fairly decent for smartphones these days. I’m actually happy that they don’t shove in a huge ass 4-inch screen panel. That’s overkill guys. But I’ve got to admit that the handsome Mozart looks awesomely like the ‘gone-but-not-forgotten’ Nexus One. Have a look at the video below, and I’m very sure you’ll be pretty much convinced that the Windows Phone 7 is going to be very awesome.

Nokia’s next generation smartphone is also your credit card, nearly.

Nokia Swipe from bob haarmans on Vimeo.

Nokia has shown to the rest of the world their latest software called Espoo, which integrates NFC payments with instant digital receipt uploaded to your phone, instead of a printed copy. Sound very ‘green’ indeed. They also ‘promised’ that their entire smartphone line starting next year will embrace this technology.

Perhaps even cooler, though, the system reads the receipt once it’s back on your phone and makes a note of the product’s return period so that it can remind you when time’s running out, perfect for getting maximum usage out of that N8 before flipping it back from whence it came. If we had to guess, this might be unveiled in full at Nokia World, which just happens to kick off tomorrow. Excited? Well, digital wallet is somewhat very 2008 thought. Hope Nokia can include a Bluetooth-enabled compact receipt printer as an optional accessory.

Acer’s iPad rival has yet to be launched, and they’re already so excited in telling the world that they’re gonna release a new handset with both Windows Phone 7 version and Android version. Known as the Liquid Metal handset (surely not designed and developed by Apple’s liquid metal arm), it might hit stores in the end of October. That’s purely speculations thought. Read more…

Samsung to multiply its display manufacturing arm by 10 times

We already knew about Samsung’s grand campaigns for escalating its display manufacturing arm in 2011, but now we also have a number to give us a sense of solid numbers: 30 million. That’s how many screens the new Mobile Display fab (set to go live in July) will be able to churn out in a month, which is a vastly superior rate in contrast to the current 3 million maximum. 10 times baby, 10 times.
